So hi guys, I came here in hope that someone could help me, I recently bought the EA classics version of Mass Effect, I checked if I could run it first with www.systemrequirements.com. It said all my components were pretty good for running the game, above the requirements even.

I ran the game perfectly twice, (Installed in English, though I have a german version.) but then on the third time it got stuck on the splash screen and didn't start, I googled this problem and found others with similar cases, I tried what people on other forums suggested. Updated my drivers, messed with the graphics settings in the Configs... I even reinstalled it then installed DirectX 11 onto my Vista 32-bit. (With all the components needed along with it.) After this the game ran again, for about three times, but then the next day I found the same problem once more when I started the game. It gets stuck on the damn splash screen, I don't know what to do. Apparently there's some weird thing with us quad core users. Might that be it? I tried going in task manager and setting affinity like someone else suggested, but it gave me an error message that said "access denied".
Another thing I did was download registry easy and patch my system flaws up, dunno if that has any effect on anything.

Oh, and install the new patch was the first thing I did after installing for the first (and second) time.:?

My System Info:

I'd be eternally grateful if someone could help me.

It's a long time I played ME1...

We need some info on the running processes during the hung splash screen.

As for the affinity, try checking the box/pressing the button "Show processes from all users" in Task Manager and then try setting Affinity again. Not sure if that will help, but running the task manager as administrator should, either way.

It worked! Do you have any recommendations about which core to run the game on? Only on two, right? I tried checking two and it didn't improve. The splash screen is still just... There. When I run the game anew the CPU settings are restarted.

Could you be more specific by what you mean on the running process? (I'm a semi technology noob, so sorry if I'm a bit slow on stuff sometimes. :I)

Never waste time with the Can You Run it web site (aka SR Labs) for anything other than a quick way to get a printout of the internal components in your PC system.  They are wrong so often that they are the laughing stock of the 'Net.

Okay, then I know that now. Is there a similar game/computer spec comparison website that's more reliable?

True about inaccuracies of can-you-run-it sites...

Anyway. Now, about the process list. Seeing if there's any Mass Effect related processes (i.e. Mass Effect.exe, Launcher.exe or whatever) in the Task Manager and knowing their CPU usage might be useful.

Also, look at other processes and see if any of them is a CPU hog (aka CPU usage around 90%.
The fact that all of them (except System Idle Process) will be around 0% is also useful. This is just some background info for us.

One thing, though... what videocard are you using?
As for just another try, try disabling Aero.
I've also experienced some extremely rare bugs related to the desktop resolution (yes, just my thoughts: What the?). For the sake of it, lower it by one step.

And there's a million of other things to do, if these pathetic attempts fail...

Assuming you've got an nVidia, you can also reset the nVidia driver manually (at least I could, the last time I checked) by killing a process (try until you succeed, but wait around 15 secs between killing them) like 'nvsvc.exe' or anything that look likes 'nv***.exe'.
You have to do this using Task Manager, also clicking that "show process from all users" button before doing so.

You should experience a brief black screen and the driver should restart (or just a system hang or a BSOD will appear in the worst case).
Yes, it's crude, but what can you do... machines must be taught a lesson. Image IPB

Okay, I disabled aero. That didn't really help, but I'll keep it off just in case.

The only process in Task Manager is MassEffect.exe. It doesn't go away when I shut down the program, the process stays unless I end it through task manager. It's CPU is 25. The rest are mostly 00. Though things like firefox (which I'm running now) and task manager itself, go up to about 03 and then sink down again.

The total CPU usage is 25-7%, the number moves along with firefox and TM.

The Videocard I am using is an ATI Radeon HD 4800.

... Any further suggestions? Hell I'll do a lot to get this game working.

Oh Bioware you freaking tease.

Alright, so MassEffect.exe it is. Try running it as an administrator (MassEffect.exe->Right click->Run as administrator).

If this doesn't help, test each of the compatibility settings (MassEffect.exe->Properties->Compatibility->Run this program in compatibility for->[try all of them step by step]).

Open up Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Event Viewer->System. See if there's any entries with a yellow exclamation mark and a title 'disk'. Indication of HDD failures. Any other Red/Yellow icon events might be worth noting too. Look specifically at the times when you start up ME. Hit F5 to refresh. Tell us what you see.

If that doesn't help, find the hung MassEffect.exe in Task Manager (run Task Manager with 'Show processes from all users'), right click on MassEffect.exe in Task Manager list->Create Dump File. (It will tell you where it saved the file and you'll be able to copy the path.) If you make this file available to me, at least, I might get bored enough at work to try (and mostly fail, hah) to examine the situation what causes it to 'do nothing' so much. Some bad DLL or a similar situation might indeed pop up.

Well I already tried doing that, (Admin and XP compatability) and I'm trying again, nada. D:

Okay, tried your Control Panel advice too...

I don't know what you meant by the >System part, because when I went into event viewer it gave me no further options... Looked in the tabs for System too, found nothing.

I didn't see any ME related problems really.
http://tinypic.com/r/23vm72e/5
/\\\\
That's pretty much it, even when I press refresh. And I have thousands of really old error/warnings too, loads of which are from last year.
(When I had a .dll problem that's now fixed... I reset my computer to an earlier date and that did it.)

Okay then, Task Manager again. It says the file is located at "C:\\\\Users\\\\DANILL~1\\\\AppData\\\\Local\\\\Temp\\\\MassEffect.DMP"

Really appreciate your help N00b. Thanks. :)

The '->System' is on your left, after expanding Windows Logs tree item. but the Administrative Events will also do, no need for extra hassle.

Looking at the Event Viewer screenshot... there shouldn't be that much of this different errors.

I'm interested in getting more details on the errors and warnings seen there. Copy & paste the event text descriptions from the 'General' tab.

As for the DMP file, how big is it? (It contains the saved state of MassEffect.exe so that one can look 'into' the application in a 'frozen' state, so to speak.)

The 'WMI' error you see is related to not having enough privileges, and the information it is trying to fetch seems to be of secondary importance (tries to fetch the CPU load).

The 'netbt' error indicates that you have an another computer with the same name on your current network. Make sure you've got just one network cable plugged in and that you don't connect through wireless and a cable at the same time. But this is of secondary importance either.

EDIT
Seems that more of the services fail to start due to duplicate computer names on the network. You should resolve this issue before attempting anything further.

Also, what about the entry from 'mrsxsmb'?
/EDIT

Now comes the craziest part. Since the DMP file is too big to be sent anywhere, you'll need to use Debugging Tools for Windows to obtain the process information from it. Download the appropriate ( x86/32bit) Debugging Tools from here: http://msdl.microsof..._6.11.1.404.msi

Once it is installed, click Start and type 'windbg' into search. It should give you an old-school looking gray item that you should run, then a gray and boring window should pop up. Create a directory named 'C:/websymbols' (Just go to C: and create a folder named 'websymbols'). Then, back in WinDbg, go to File->Symbol File Path and enter this:
SRV*c:/websymbols*http://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols

Then go to File->Open Crash Dump and select that huge DMP file and hit Open. It should take a while and the folder 'websymbols' should get populated with all kinds of stuff. Do not delete the folder, as it is needed and will speed things up for further analysis.

(There's an indicator bottom-left. If it says '*BUSY*' then WinDbg is working and you should wait before attempting another command. '0:000' means it is ready.)

Copy&paste this:
~* k 30
into the text window right next to the one saying 0:000.

It will output a HUGE heap of text. Well, I need all of the WinDbg output to continue from this point.

The next step is a friggen big cup of coffee for me, heh.

I like Mega posts. It means something is being done haha.

Hmmm... I checked in my "Network" folder and apparently there's two connections and it's weird, I don't know whether to delete anything or close something? When I press the one on the left it leads me to "printers" and when I press that it's an empty folder, the one on the right opens Windows Media Player. O.o

http://i40.tinypic.com/33pelao.jpg

Here's the mrsxmb one, sorry I think I copied that link wrong.

Here is your Dump info, It wasn't as big as you thought lol. It took about seven seconds and it says 0:000 now.

Several of the systems that I have had through here had twin ethernet devices, and I seldom had any reason to use both, but depending on how you set up a personal network, it may enumerate both, no matter that there is only one that connects anywhere.

Well how should I get rid of them? I can't seem to just delete them, it doesn't give me that optiona at all, and I can't re-name them either. :I

You can go to Network (wherever you find it)->right mouse click->Properties->Change adapter settings link (on your left)->right click on reduntant (aka all except one that is showing as Connected) network connections->Disable.

The 'netbt' errors should go away.

IMPORTANT:
If Mass Effect still won't work after 'netbt' errors went away, a comment about using WinDbg... You didn't execute the command ~* k 30  after opening the DMP file and setting the symbols.

This command is the last and is key; you should execute it AFTER the steps that you seem to have done in your post (you seem to be doing it right, just don't forget THIS weird command).

As a reminder, you need to always setup symbols in WinDbg (no need to re-create the folder) before opening the DMP file.

:I Oh crap I missed that part. I'm too observative to be true.

I'll fix that.

Uhm, I can only right click the media player linking network, the one that leads to a non existant printer has no properties option, but when I do it on the Media player one it doesn't give me a left or right or adapter settings link. It just gives me links to the microsoft homepage and unclickable info like my IP adress and things.

Unless you didn't wait for Mass Effect to really hang, this indicates that it couldn't initialize some Human Interface Device, i.e. mouse or keyboard and got probably stuck in a loop or just waiting for some file (not necessarily a disk file either) to be read.

Try reinstalling DirectX just to see if DX is the issue at all (you can do it directly from ME2 setup files; just look for DXSETUP.EXE and launch it with administrative privileges)

After you reinstall DX, and it doesn't help, and if you're still up for this nonsense, you should run ME2 again, wait for it to hang (wait some good 5 minutes) and create a new dump file and post back the huge list from the new DMP file. It should contain a similar thread stuck at the same spot. We can also later try to determine what file is causing this.

If you feel like looking at a quick list of files that ME uses, then wait for ME to hang and go to Task Manager->Performance tab->Resource Monitor button->expand Disk panel (just click it) and look for MassEffect.exe as the image. Look at the corresponding values in the File column and also post back the results. (If there is nothing for MassEffect.exe, launch the Resource Manager before launching ME.)

EDIT:
I meant ME1. Fixed.

I don't have ME2. I only have ME1 installed. But I'll try reinstalling DirectX.

Here are screens of the Resource Monitor, most of the errors are in my system. :I

Scroll, so that MassEffect.exe is seen on the Disk list... heh. It's apparently stuck at some file there. Just a tad lower and we'd see it. :P

Not much use of that.

Press start, type 'dxdiag' and start the program up. If it will ask to check for something, click No. Then click the Save All Information button. Post the contents of the file that it will create.

It's taking an awfully long time. It says "Please Wait while DxDiag collects Input information" but it's been like five minutes and it's stuck on the same place. (The bar has only filled up to like a quarter)

EDIT: I left it while having breakfast, it's been 25 minutes and nothing has happened, it just pretends it's doing something by flashing the green part of the bar, but the bar never moves foward.

Interesting. It should've been less than a minute. So I think we've found part or source of the problem: DirectX (possibly DirectInput).
Try navigating to the Input tab there and post a shot of how's it looking.
