After learning of how to do this I figured I'd go change up my main character's look before playing Awakening, problem is everytime that I try to open his save file in the toolset I get an "Out of memory" error, and it just won't open. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering I have a pretty high-end computer, and nothing I seem to try will let me open this file. Anyone had this problem that came up with a work-around?
Using the toolset to alter a character's appearance.

http://social.biowar...11689/blog/707/ - if you're running a 32-bit OS you're probably SOL. I've got 4 gigs and tried everything. The toolset just can't handle a 19 mb save apparently.
If anyone knows any alternative I'd be real thankful.

the best way to make sure this will not happen is
1: do this on the start of a playthrough becouse the file wont be as big then.
2: try to clean your harddrive, the later in-game the save is, the more hard drive space the toolset needs to open it.

cleaning your HD won't make any difference, it's directly related to the amount of memory you have free. You can try going through task manager and ending as many unnecessary tasks as possible free up memory but it's a fool's errand for me when I've only got 4 gigs and the save is taking up 3.5+. All I want to do is change my character's hairstyle for Awakening

Alright I found a way to bypass the toolset to change appearance. It's a pain in the ass but it worked for me. Basically, you have to use a hex editor to access your save game and manually copy in the morph values from the new face you want. I used program called HxD, you can get it off Cnet, just google it.
First find the current morph values for your character. I did this by opening one of my first saves from Ostagar. The toolset is able to open small, early game files like this no problem. Once you open it, click the trees in this order: SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR to SAVEGAME_PLAYERCHAR_CHAR then scroll down to SAVEGAME_PLAYER_MORPH. Copy that huge list of binary numbers.
Next, open up HxD. Open the save game file you were unable to access in the toolset due to the memory error. Click the search button and paste in the MORPH binaries into the box. Make sure it's set to search for binaries, and then hit OK. It should highlight all those numbers you copied and pasted. Now right click the selection and click "Fill selection". Copy and paste the NEW MORPH BINARIES of the new appearance you want your character to have. Save the file and drop it back in your save folder. You should have your new look now, hopefully.
Not the best tutorial, I know :X if anyone has questions I'd be happy to help. Just so glad I got this to work. Fix your toolset Bioware!
PS: BACK UP YOUR SAVE FILE BEFORE MESSING AROUND WITH IT IN A HEX EDITOR!
