I've tried the infiltrator on veteran and I plan a playthrough on insanity once I finish my soldier insanity game. I chose the AR over the widow and that worked for veteran. According to the wiki, the tempest actually comes pretty damn close for shield damage to the geth pulse rifle and I've found I've been able to use it at above medium range by using 5 shot bursts. On veteran just the mantis was fine, but I think insanity needs the widow if you want more satisfaction sniping.

The viper is not that far away from the widow.Enough posted videos prove that.

I agree. When I prepared for my insanity run I went with assault training. The mantis may not be as strong as the widow, but it gets the job done. On insanity having a weapon that could very quickly fell several enemies, which the vindicator can, was a godsend. The tempest is too weak at range. I'm sure I could have gotten through with the widow too, but the vindicator blows the crap out of the tempest or carnifex.

Why not using the viper? Doesnt feel like a sniper rifle? But automatic sniper rifles exists.

hmmm i wonder if you choose the weapon training, if you go through the campaign again and you get to choose the red assault rifle...i forget the name of it. But i tried out the weapon on my soldier, but not sure if i can get the training my first time and the weapon through the second run for the infiltrator class. and you're righto n the fact the viper isn't far off, but its burst shots goes by real fast, the mantis isn't a bad choice either, i suppose if you get all the upgrades that you can, it wouldn't really matter which rifle you use anyway, since they do devastating bonuses to the enemies.

on 2nd Infiltrator playthru i picked AR over Widow, as on original run i didnt see what all the fuss was about it besides i didnt like how it looked on my back !
the AR is fun to use and yes although kinda like the Temp the extra distance it gives suits me.
Lifes about choices and im usually not one of the sheep who go along with the " Widow is worlds greatest thing " so yes as an idea why not take the AR

Smgs are crap weapons compared with assault rifles.With the vindicator and the acuracy upgrade: I could use it like a sniper rifle, no recoil, great accuracy, easy headshots.

I've never been particularly skilled at shooters in general, and, despite ME not being a conventional action RPG, I still have difficulty aiming the sniper rifle at times. It's perfectly alright when enemies are stood still, but even the slightest bit of movement has me shooting at the wall. Maybe I just need more practice, but I always go for the assault rifle.

At short range, any SMG is better than any AR except Vindicator or Revenant. If you can't get the Revenant, you'll only have the Vindicator, and it runs out of ammo quite quickly.

I've always liked the Avenger... I never thought much of the Vindicator, although it makes a nice beefy sound. But beyond that, I'm afraid I wasn't a fan.
