I think I now have my answer and what I am going to tell him, I believe this captures the essence of who we are, both good and bad.

"The alpha, the omega, the protector, the aggressor, to every mind who breaths destruction or defense and to the mind that is at rest. All the children of men, to the old and withered, every life brought and to every life taken. Every pawn at the knights table, every free man with free will, to those who find understanding in anguish and to those who find purpose in euphoria. To those who look beyond, and to those who would travel to the edge, for the souls who fought to the end, and to the souls who lost hope. We endure."

Fix the typos before you send your paragraph to your old English professor.

Meh, if you're refering to the un-liberal use of commas I guess I could cut it down. Other than that I don't see any spelling errors or the like.

Thanks though, I tend to type quickly and sometimes errors do occur.

He could've been referring to "knights" which should be "knight's" or "knights'".

My thoughts on the subject in general can either be easily summed up through my Taoist leanings, or ineloquently expressed through direct and indirect observation of the world around me. To save time (and a massive, barely coherent soap-box rant) I'll just say that my feelings on the subject are that we are an inherently conflicted, highly adaptive species that both embraces and abhors change. We are more diverse than any other species of animal on the Earth, but sometimes we see diversity as a polar opposite to unity. We let our feelings and emotions blind us, we put faith in any number of spirits or deities or none, and we like nothing more than a good old internet debate, as futile as they are.

Not only animals, but flawd and stupid ones as a species too....

Out tile will come, we just 'think' and 'assume' we are the greatest species on the planet (well, some of the more dumb of our species do at least).....

Why think about it?

It's not emo crap Busomjack, it's philosophy of a level that's simply to high for your simple warrior-mind to understand.

Busomjack doesn't need to understand philosophy, when he can bench press it.

It's incredibly halarious that the people who mangage our government and world, are the ones who have no common sense. I really don't think we are that intelligent to tell you the truth, we have vast brain power, but choose to squander it on petty wars and greed. However, the Human mind is capable of great kindness as well.

wars are by no means petty they are very important to population control and we need more wars (or a human genophage)

Again I may sound very morbid, but I have to agree with you on this point randumb (hehe, name has dumb in it).  If humanity didnt have wars and strife, we would probably never advance technologically, because not only are there new weapons made, but new medicines and medical technologies are created to help deal with the resulting devestations that war can bring.
The worst humanity has to offer often brings out the best in it as well, which goes back to what the OP was saying about how humans can do some terrible things, but at the same time be extremely passionate towards their fellow man.

Its just hard to see the good when there is so much pain and suffering

The very thought that a nation can wipe another off the face of the universe with a SINGLE press of a button is ludacris. A species who can't even make up their minds on economic stability, has the power to destroy our planet.

That is a scary thought.

A powerful species that is cowardly is also scary.

Think about it, desperation is not a good catalist for prosperity.

*Sigh* another thread started by another wannabe intellectual trying to show off how smart and deep he is by posting his idiotic poetry about how everyone but him is an idiot.

Now I am going to show off my own intellectual superiority by quoting someone elses words about how everyone but me is an idiot.

"The person is smart but people are dumb panicky animals and you know it" Agent K, Men in Black

See arent I a smart cookie.

But on a lighter note here is an artist's impression of the OP for your veiwing pleasure.

We live in an entropic universe, while things may get better for the short term *puts on Brad Pitt voice* along a long enough timeline everyone's chances of survival decrease to zero.

Evolution, as we currently understand it, does not make a species 'better', but rather 'better suited to survive its current environment'. Sometimes this means we get smarter, more often it actually doesn't, and unless we take control of our evolution via such means as genetic engineering (and then that requires those who administer and guide it to be selfless and moral individuals who truly want to help humanity rather than create ubermensch) we are not going to evolve into some Star Trek peaceful enlightened being, Mother Nature's a **** and as a result the most violent, nasty species makes its way to dominance (aka humanity), and so our eventual demise is assured. It is the major flaw of natural evolution.
