SOLVED for Steam:
-Make sure that your current user account has write and modify permission for C:\\\\\\\\Program Files\\\\\\\\Common Files\\\\\\\\Bioware
-Run DAO_UpdateAddinsXml_Steam.exe in the folder C:\\\\\\\\Program Files\\\\\\\\Steam\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\steamapps\\\\\\\\common\\\\\\\\dragon age origins\\\\\\\\redist
-Make sure that you see a 'Result[0]' in the installer dialogue, 'Result[-1]' indicates a problem

This works by the way... but only if you run it while logged in as Administrator. Even just running it AS admin, from a normal logged on user won't cut it (even if when running it you get 'Result[0)

I suspect that the problem is that we use steam to install the game, but if you are logged in as a non admin user, Steam doesn't have access to the required directories (since it's using your accounts permissions) to install all that it needs to get the game to run 1st time. It of course doesn't error, or tell you this!

Heres the rub though: I ran DAO_UpdateAddinsXml_Steam.exe via Admin login, loaded up Steam, and "Other Campaigns" was available. Close everything, log out, Log back into my "normal" account, Open steam, launch DA:OA, and it's greyed out again. So there must be a permissions issue somewhere, or perhaps running DAO_UpdateAddinsXml_Steam.exe is logged-in user specific, and not GAME specific??

I shall keep at it, maybe it's a simple matter of granting your "normal" login account rights to some directory or something. In the meantime, running it as Admin WILL work.

Hope this helps you as much as you have helped me ^_^

***UPDATE *** Hot diggity!! I was cruising the steam forums, and this worked for me:

Ok, first I added my "normal" login account with full access the the entire Steam directory, so maybe you should do the same.

Then, Open Steam, go my games, Dragon Age: Origins Awekening, right-click properties, go to Local files tab, click on verify integrity of game cache . This will run and no doubt say "1 file was missing and will be reloaded" or somesuch.

Exit steam, re open steam, rerun game. Said missing file (which just happened to be "DAO_UpdateAddinsXml_Steam.exe") briefly flashes on screen as it downloads. And Voila! Other campaigns is now active.

I hope this helps you all. I'm off to slay me some bad guys!

Open up Word
Paste the following into word

"E:\\\\data\\\\DAO_UpdateAddinsXml.exe" /addins="BioWare\\\\Dragon Age\\\\Settings\\\\addins.xml" /manifest="I:\\\\Games\\\\Dragon Age\\\\addins\\\\dao_prc_ep_1\\\\manifest.xml"

Now, change this accordingly to your own drives.
E=My DVD drive, Put whatever your DVD drive is.
I:\\\\Games = my location for Dragon age, insert your own path to it

With the modifications, copy this text. Open up CMD, right click in it, press paste, enter if need be. The Addon installer will run succesfully. With any luck you can now boot up Dragon Age and select Awakening!

PS. This board tend to double the number of "\\\\". If you see two \\\\ in a row instead of one, simply make sure it's only one, as folder paths should be.

You are god.

And also a reply so that I might find your info whenever I need it again. Thanks for dissolving my problems :)

I got Dragon Age and Awaking on Steam, both installed. Yet I do not have a DAO_UpdateAddinsXml.Exe

I am confused why it is greyed out.

This is why I hate EA. Activating any of their expansions is absolutely ridiculous.
