Just picked up a copy and installed it. When I go click on play the screen goes black and I get a message "Dragon Age: Origins has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience." I did a uninstall and installed it again but still the same problem. I have seen other people post about similar problems but most say it only happened to them after the new patch. I haven't even gotten that far. I haven't see any solutions and I need help.

Preliminary diagnostic information

PCs are not *anything* at all like game console systems.  There is almost nothing that is truly "standard" between various branded PCs, making the game developers' jobs very difficult, and resulting in warning labels attached to game boxes for those games that have serious requirements.

In case you have misunderstood how to evaluate your PC compared to that game box label, we have to start from here.  Fill it all in.

Basic Hardware Specification Chart (Empty so far)

Processor Manufacturer: AMD / Intel
Processor Name / Type: Athlon 64 / Pentium / C2D / dual core / quad, etc.
Processor Speed:  ?.? Ghz (or AMD Performance Number)
Operating System / Service Pack: WindowsXP with SP #?, Vista ? (Oh, no!)
System RAM: ? ? GBs (MBs, if less than 1024)
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: ATI / Nvidia (only those two are supported, PERIOD)
Video Card Model: (examples) Radeon HD 3650 Pro / Geforce 8600 GT
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst ?.? / Nforce ??.?? (use numbers, not the word "latest")
Video Card onboard RAM: ? ? ? MBs
Sound Card Manufacturer:

I don't get the error message when my game crashes and I have to do a hard boot to get it back up and running.

I started a human rouge and got passed the castle and into the new area and then it just goes blank. I thought to get the latest drivers but then it just went blank right away rather than a minute or so after running around. Its like my video card just quits working but while its running the game it runs perfectly.

Intel dual core 3.0
Windows XP Home SP3
4GB (i know it doesn't fully support more than 3)
ATI 3870 512 (528? 5 something either way) Just updated the drives and crashed before coming here 9.10.
Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1(external sound card)

I'm at a loss of what to do at this point and I'm really looking forward to having the problem fixed.

The HD 3870 requires a great deal of 12V current to run.  When the power supply is cheap, old, or just plain weak, it won't get as much joice as it requires.  Far more power supplies are just junk than there are good ones.  There are about a dozen quality brand names, plus a half dozen more a step below that, then a hundred garbage brands.
