If you are playing Origins and not Awakening, the best thing to do is reinstall the game, google (or use the search engine of your choice) for patch 1.02a and only patch up to that.

What makes this a real kick in the teeth is that the story, mechanics, and gameplay are great except for these crippling bugs.

This is getting frustrating as hell. I've already picked up Awakenings, but I'm not going to do anything with it until there's at least an acknowledgment of the issues with 1.03... mostly because finishing up the core game is incredibly slow going with the obnoxiously frequent crashes and the constant manual saves that provokes (after every combat, at least).

I agree. Up until before 1.03, my 80 hours of play time with DAO had been a blast. Now, I am not sure if I shall get Awakening either. I probably would. But I would wait for a few months at least to see how the fixes are managed.

As said, it is a real shame because everything else about the game is excellent but it does seem to be let down by some massive bug issues for many people...

Havn't heard any word from Bioware/EA, seems EA does what they are best at, ignoring paying customers.

Slightly inaccurate. BioWare have acknowledged they are monitoring the Awakening/1.03 bugs thread and that they are compiling information. I think we can bet on at least getting 1-2 more patches, but what they might fix is a mystery. I think crashes take top priority, followed by performance issues, and then gameplay bugs... quest and scripting bugs likely come last, and are least likely to be fixed, unfortunately. The big issue is reproducing the bugs, though, because "I did this and this happened" is rarely enough to understand why a bug happens and how it can be fixed; if you have some obscure issue that is related to some old webcam driver from 1995 for example, well, don't expect BioWare to fix it for you.melkathi wrote...
There has been no statement whatsoever by bioware on an ETA for the next patch. There has been no acknowledgment that there are problems with patch 1.03.

Doesn't sound like acknowledgment to me. <_< Besides that thread discusses Awakening gameplay bugs. There has been no statement from Bioware addressing the crash-galore, that the patch 1.03 introduced, not a single post.Just want to let you guys know that we are going through this thread and
others like to compile your feedback and make sure these sorts of
things are entered into our bug database. Thanks a lot and keep it up!

Hey, at least they're doing something about the bugs. Like I said, it takes a while for them to find and fix the more major bugs and glitches. But having the game crash is something that can't be completely avoided because of the sheer number of variables involved. Could be an undetected memory leak, but then again it may be the computer hardware on some level. That and different people experience game crashes at different rates. One person could have it crash every once-in-a-while while someone else could have it crash every 30 minutes or so.
Although I do agree with you that patches can cause game crashes; case in point, my copy of Fable 2 ran smooth before I downloaded the online co-op patch (which was freaking REQUIRED if I wanted any of the DLC). But once that was patched, my game would freeze so much that the only way I could stop it was install the game to my HDD.

I like the gameplay and story lines however the current technical problems that I have received over the years with them has been annoying. It almost makes me not want to play. If it wasn't for the gameplay and story line I wouldn't put up with it.

BioWare / EA should take a look at the user reviews in the Internet. Words are out that the game is not playable for some PC community. And I bet it is hurting their top line.

I want my money back, and I want my time back OR I want a ****ing fix for this NOW I paid good money and have nothing but an expensive piece of plastic collecting dust.
I used to be a HUGE Bioware fan I would brag about how it's the best company and the games are always top quality everyone should get them. What a huge mistake I have no doubt many will spread the word about what they have done here how they let us all down and abandoned us to suffer without even so much as a response.

Reinstalling OS is not an option for me. First, it is very time consuming and I am not tech savvy either. Second, I have licensed software that may not install again on fresh OS. That includes, believe it or not, Mass Effect Pinnacle Station that can't be redownloaded like the ME 2 DLC. And of course re-liciensing my thousands of music tracks from Nokia Music Store would be something I would do when I absolutely need to.
I could of course reinstall DAO, apply patch 1.02b, hope the DLCs and save games are still there. But I have no hope to play Awakening, have I?

I know for one everything on my computer is up-to-date. The issue here is with the patch, nothing else. Even 1.02a and a fresh install of just DAO works like a charm, minus the known "progressively longer loading time" bug. The 2 times I've tried installing Awakening and 1.03 all my fps issues and crashing have resurfaced.

mostly this bugs and crashes are connected with installed user mods. the mods are not created properly and therefore a lot of id collisions will cause a lot of problems
no.
the problems persist on numerous fresh installs with or without mods.
