Allow me to first say this: I loved Origins. I slobbered over and practically procreated with that game. I've played every origin story through to the end, save for the castless dwarf which I'm getting around to. I obsessed over the game and I waited like a hyper active fan girl for awakening.

Now that I have it, I'm not impressed.

When importing my character I simply don't get the feel of the impact of any of the choices I made in origins. It's as if nothing I did in the rest of fereldan matters in my new land.

As an example, it's already been revealed that we get Oghren back, so this isn't a spoiler. In Origins that drunken dwarf was practically in love with me. I checked his loyalty meter now and it was back to square one with him, which doen't make a lick of sense.

As for the rest of the characters...a lot of this just doesn't come together. For one thing we had romances in origins. I've been in love with everyone but Morrigan and I agreed to remain with all of them at the games end. What happens to your beloved when you go to Vigil's keep? I see no reason for a seperation and if there was, you get no explination and no mention of them. It makes very little sense and is something they very obviously just sort of shrugged thier shoulders at and went 'meh, oh well.'.

Your new companions lack any of the endearing qualities of the old. You can't even walk up to them and start a conversation, they just spout nonsense at you like any random, unimportant npc. You can't get to really know them on your own terms and, seeing as that was also a big part of what made origins great, it just puts a sour taste on the game. Not to mention it makes figuring out what gift to give to who a huge pain in the ass.

I fully admit that brining all the details and complex choices made in a previous game when importing your charcter would have been a monuemntal task. So many little descions that could affect the world. BUT: that's what this game is about. That's the beauty and draw of it. My actions matter. It doesn't feel that way in awakening.

Basically put, it's Dragon age origins with the guts carved out. It's a fun toy but there's not much really to it. Having played it for roughly 8 hours already, I feel confident in saying that maybe I should have waited and gotten it second hand, or maybe rented it.Posted Image

  Anyone else feel this way?

Haven't played it yet, debating on waiting till price drops. In some ways your description of it reminds me of ME2.

What do you give Awakening out of 10?

Just barely into to Awakenings, but I gave ME2 a 10. I loved it. Sounds like you didn't. (I know... you were asking the OP).

I have yet to even install it. I also purchased the guide. After finding out how little the previous characters are involved and that there are no romances etc, I have lost most of my excitement. It seems they have removed much of what gave Origins it's depth and richness. I have to wonder if they rushed this one out.

Hmm, I don't know. I think your view of the new conversation system really ignores any of the changes they made, instead just saying that they spout out idiotic comments. I think they need to find a better balance, but if they can mix old style, with this new system, they'll have a far superior conversation system. I thought talking to party members at any time in the field was more or less pointless, as most of the time, you'll get their typical convo options, but with even less options.

Heres how I see it. If you were most attracted to DA:O because of romance in relationships, you won't be able to play Awakening without feeling like something is gone...I loved the romance, but I'm having a great time with the expansion so far.

How much of the expansion have you played, might I ask?

If I critiqued the game as hard as I could, I would give it at least, a 7.

I beat it and I feel the same way, it just feels like a spin-off.
The story itself is pretty good, but it feels like a you were ripped from ferelden and are in a completely seperate world.

For starters, all your previous companions go poof.  Second, the only real choices that impact the way are your conversation after the intro parts with whomever is reigning as king/queen.  Third, the companions are just spit onto you with each mission.  Sure there may be a story behind them, but thier personalities as a whole are lacking becuase you have very little dialogue with them compared to Origins.

Comparing content, there is no way this is worth $40.

Well the new armor and weapons they have are all friggin sweet. You'll be switching out your old armour (even if it's the best you had) within half an hour. You get to see some more dwarven history, which is nice, and the story with these new dark spawn is....interesting but not mind blowingly fascinating yet. Maybe it'll be more so when I'm done with the game.

Also, I'm not sure why, but ruling the arling and dealing with the nobels is just super fun for me. I think it's because it involves what was so critical in Origins: making importatn choices.

Um...that's basically it. I mean it's dragon age. It's just not the high stanard you would have expected.

Do you think it would be better starting with a new char?

I doubt it. From what I understand, the new char from Orlais has no backround. In Origins you get constant refrences to your characters race and history. The new warden is supposedly just a shell with no past that anyone ever mentions. But that's just from what I've been told.

I don't mind not having romances, but the character interaction so far seems kind of hollow, I guess? I like how you can have the context sensitive dialogues, but not having the player initiated dialogues makes the game feel like its on rails, like the player is just along for the ride.

I'm definitely enjoying the game so far and the combat is just as good as ever (provided you liked it in DAO), but it feels like its just missing that intangible "something" that made Origins come alive.

but then at least the way your former companions treat you when you meet them would make sense, since they don't know you.

Thanks for that bit of insight.  Sorry it didn't meet your expectations. Take it easy.

The arling decisions are pretty fun, and makes you feel more in control of decisions, no matter how petty, or serious. I'm actually loving the character combo of Oghren, Nate, and Anders. I dunno what you guys are on, but they are FUN! There are many pros and cons to the expansion, and it's not for everyone.

My favorite parts are definitely the politics and intrigue, especially holding court and trying to play your banns against one another. It reminds me a lot of A Game of Thrones. You have all these people supposedly all loyal, but they each have their own motivations, and you've got to sort it all out.

I haven't played more than a few hours, but I'm curious to see how the decisions I've already made play out. I also like that everything isn't all mapped out on a wiki yet. With one of the companions I made kind of a risky decision, and I think it could turn out well, but it could also turn out very bad. Not knowing is pretty cool (although of course one day I'll know it all and map out my perfect playthrough...but for now I like it like this). If it does turn out badly I'll have to reload, but it was fun to make that decision just on instinct and not because the internets have determined which way is optimal.

I like the dialogue triggers in the field (it reminds me of Mass Effect in that way), but I wish there were more of a happy medium. I really liked hanging out in camp in DAO and just chatting...I don't wanna go on a hike every time I have a question.

I also LOVE that there are some really cool-looking leather armors. I got this one set that's all black; it looks really nice. I haven't dared put a hat on a mage yet.

Although I was bummed at no romances initially, it could actually turn out to be a big plus, *on the condition that they do eventually reunite you*. The moment will be so much greater the more it's drawn out. Again this reminds me of ME/ME2. Since Ashley Williams wasn't in ME2, it makes me look forward to ME3 that much more to see how it turns out. I just don't want them to suddenly jump way forward or back in time and lose all connection to the characters I know and enjoy with no resolutions.

ooooh, political intrigue sounds good. I loved all that Landsmeet business in DAO.

I'm just waiting for them to patch the patch so I don't crash or mess up my Origins games.

have a king almost made so I'll wait for him to finish his journey. (3rd playthrough)

love this thread because it's infomative and no one had a meltdown. ^_^

Well one of my romances showed up...and I'm about 4ish hours into the game, it wasn't a short flash cameo either..at least it lasted for a few minutes.

One other thing that one of the early players stated was the difficulty setting..to push it up a notch, because on normal it seems a bit too easy.   I agree with that..but doing my first run on normal anyways til I get to know this expac.

I think there's replayability here, well at least for me.   No lack of quests thats for sure, and I like the new abilities I have seen so far.

There's something that I can't quite put my finger on yet, far as people we knew or how they react,   for instance Oghren..doesn't  seem his "natural" self...he seems "forced"    The drunkeness is even more accentuated...not sure if Bioware thought that by increasing this part of his character, that would round him out more?  lol

Oghren has also lost weight and looks taller...:P   hehehe

He's not a fave of mine, and it does look like I am pretty much stuck with him,  as I originally thought before downloading the expac early this morning.

I'll see how I feel about the rest of of it.

Oh and I didn't have a problem at all..with importing my first Origins character into the game.  Its quite easy and user friendly....so that part is good for sure.  :)

Ah okay..just remembered...there's something about the voices...thats what I can't figure out yet..something is different about them.   Its not a bad thing,  it just keeps hitting me every time I listen to them.

The feudal theme is more pronounced...the expac seems to be delving deeper into that part of DA..which is a good thing,  it seems to have a different flavour than Origins.

Definite replayability.  And Dragon Age modders don't fool around with the quality they exhibit.  I expect great mods heading our way to look forward to as well.

13-14 hours, I enjoyed it and it had it's moments where I was tensed at deciding what I was going to do in that scenario. I'm still wondering if I could've gotten better results, but other than that.. I didn't get attached to the new squad, found the final boss extremely lacking and found most combat sequences were dragging out the length of the game instead of giving true meaningful gameplay.
