Is it just me or was the death of Mhairi completley suprising?

I was looking forward to having a sword shield warrior now I have a bunch of shields and armor for noting.(other than Oghren)

Is justice a sword shield warrior, or is my rogue going to have a bunch of items for a character that's not coming?

Surprising in the way that I didn't think Bioware would go out of its way to ****** off the player base so soon. I was really looking forward to having a tank to start with and there are few enough characters as is.

Edit: And as far as the shield thing goes, you can use the respec tomes to turn that annoying dwarf into a tank. I personally elected to just let him tank with a two hander and used two mages to keep him healed.

Justice is a sword and board warrior. But it ultimately doesn't matter with the respec tomes you can buy. You can make Oghren a sword and board if you wish...and if you aren't playing one, you might think about doing that until you get Justice anyway and then switch him back to a two hander.

Ah well, the marketing dep. struck once again.

IIRC nobody @ BioWare actually promised she'd be a permanent companion

- that was only indirectly suggested by the promo hogwash on the world update
page.

Hopefully someone will create a mop file of Mhairi soon - I look forward
to play her as Bryce's youngest :)

Way I see it, if they didn't give her a video put would whine cause she is just a red shirt during the opening. They gave her a video, and now we are angry for feeling mislead. They still gave us our five new companions, so they just pulled on over us that cause us to go blind.

I would just like to know the reason for killing her off.. They made a big deal about introducing her as a new companion and kill her off in the first 20 min of the game.. Feel kinda duped..

I didn't think I was alone in feeling cheated. She would have made a fine companion so different from the 2 rebels you start with. I understand they need someone to die to make the joining itself seem special but I never cared to get to know Daveth or Ser Jory as much as Mhairi. What really stunned me was the approval changes. Which meant they wanted you to think she would survive.

As soon as she introduced herself and said she'd yet to go through her joining i knew she was a Red Shirt, I knew Anders and Ohgren would pass the Joining with flying colors, so when it was her turn i wasn't surprised in the least when she croaked and flopped on the floor.

The time i was given with the character i really got to enjoy her and i hoped she'd survive, but i'm pretty sure that's what Bioware wanted, It really strikes home the sacrifice that the Grey Wardens make, and the seriousness of the position.

My only problem with the death was that no one seemed to bat an eyelash when she died...it was kinda like...oh well, she's dead....onto business! Can someone move this body out of the way?

I think it was a great move, myself. Very nice melding of storytelling and marketing.

It's the joining, people die from it, that's how it is.

Of course, this is a forum, so you will mostly se posts from people it bothered (that, and any other single issue people have a problem with), while those who enjoy it or are fine with it usually keep silent.

It did come as a shock since she was gaining approval and everything.... Nice to know that I didn't do something wrong and she died for it.

The reason she died was obviously to drive it home that the Joining is dangerous and some casualties are to be expected. And BioWare played it up with her character video and fully implemented NPC status (XP and influence) so you wouldn't see it coming after the two guys in Origins who kicked the bucket. I didn't care much that either of them died, but I was looking forward to having a female fighter in the party. Of course I'm disappointed, but kudos to BioWare for a sleight of hand well performed.

Ironically, I somehow missed seeing the Mhairi character video, so I was totally expecting her to die in the joining. Probably for the best. If I was expecting her to be a full-time character, I would have been more annoyed at how casually the cutscene handled her death.

I just wished they had done it where it wasn't set that she would always die. Would have preferred it varied who died from game to game.

When i got to that point i had figured that it was a choice thing and only 2 people could survive the Joining so i reloaded to just before it and i turned oghren and anders down to join to grey wardens but she still died and i had no party members

Well, her death was really awesome. Since, I had seen her character video, and was completely shocked when she died, hehe. Well played, Bioware, well played!

This was only beef with it. This was handled much better in DAO. Otherwise, her being killed off and the reactions by the butthurt make me laugh. BIO won this round, people, they got you to connect with a character who was with you for an hour tops. LOL

I was totally disappointed when she died. I was counting on her to be my replacement for Alistair - a sword and shield tank. Now I don't have a tank. I can respec Oghren but for the sake or roleplaying, - Oghren is not a defensive-minded tank in spirit. He is a reckless 2-H swinging beserker. Then there is Justice, don't know much about him. Someone mentioned he has tank potential?

But I liked Mhairi. Gave her massive armor and the Fade Wall and she was ready to go. She also reminded me of Ser Cauthrien (whom I kinda liked).

i thought this was PLANE cool since it came totally unexpected...and guess what, you can RESPEC...and thats the exact reason why they did this so early, that you didnt build a relationship

i thought it was even cooler if it came later - reminds me of aeris in final fantasy 7 - one of the greatest moments in gaming history
