I started playing awakening at 12:30 this morning after buying it at walmart. Mhairi dies in the beginning of the game? Whats up with that? And in case there is I think I will ask anyway, is there a conversation that needs to happen to get her to live? I know thats a long shot but none the less.

Nope, no way to keep the ritual from killing someone no matter who it is. There's always a chance that those who go through it won't be strong enough to survive it. Which is why it's kept secret.
