The city guard offers you a quest called "Law and Order," asking you to deal with the smugglers, while the smugglers want you to help them out.

If you agree to help the smugglers, agree to help the guards, kill some smugglers (like the doorman), and THEN you go to the tavern to talk with the bartender to persuade him to open his trapdoor for goods smuggling, you can actually screw up both sides of the quest, making it impossible to complete either one.

This is silly, because you shouldn't be able to "help" the smugglers after you've already started attacking them and sided with the guards.

A fix would be to make it so the bartender wouldn't offer you the option of following through on the smuggler quest after you've already helped the guards.

Ohh so it's not just me, I was trying to figure out what the heck happened. The head guard won't talk to me anymore and I just restarted the whole game because of it.

Hopefully I'll remember what not to do the next go-around. Thanks for the heads up.

That sounds like an issue to look into to me. I don't think it should be breaking like that.

Just encountered this about 2 minutes ago Michael. Accepted Smuggler quest, Accepted law & order quest. Did not complete smuggler quest. Eliminated smugglers, but now the Head Guard won't talk to me and said i was a "murderer".

(note my encounter was on PC, stumbled across this post via Google)

I finished the portion of the quest where you assist the Amaranthine guard, and then I noticed I could still interact with the barkeep. So I figure, hey, I guess there's more to this quest. I persuade him to give the smugglers a reason to trust him (thinking I'd be doing the guard a favor by ousting yet another smuggling ring) but instead now all the guards are calling me a murderer. I hope this doesn't affect plot relations later on.

Same thing here. I talked to the barkeep before wiping out the smugglers (I thought maybe he could open the way so I could get to them), so now I've got the guard captain showing up as a quest marker to finish the quest, but both quests are completed in the journal and when I talk to him, he gives me the "murderer" treatment.

It's annoying me too, I honestly didn't notice that it was completely f'd up until like 6 or 7 hours further into the game, and I just don't feel like starting over again after all this. Will hope they patch it soon, if not, then I guess it'll be something to take care to notice my next playthrough.

aw man. i ran into the same bug. I need a fix soon. I can't stand playing, because I don't know how being a "murderer" will affect the game. Plus, I just feel too bad. :(

(PC Version) I've discovered a fun little bug with this quest where you can get infinite gold if you follow the quest line to help the smugglers up until the cavern right after you kill the thieves. Once you kill the 6 or 7 thieves, You talk to the smuggler leader and collect your bounty. Then when he asks you to go after the sergeants you select "I can't do this." He'll give you the 15 gold and leave you alone. Then every time you talk to him again, he'll give you 15 gold. Just keep accepting the money and then declining his offer.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a way to backstab the smuggler leader after you get a bunch of gold from him and then be considered a hero by the guards. So once you start helping the smugglers, you're considered a murderer and the guards won't talk to you, even though the only people you've killed so far have been thieves. It's too bad, you were usually able to do that sort of thing in the previous game.

Same problem here. Anyone know if there is a variable one could switch with a savegame editor to get the results that are inline with the actions taken?

I have a different bug with the Law and Order Quest

It is when you are chasing the "Suspisous Character" around the city and defeating his hired goons, after killing the 4th group of them, the "Suspisious Character" will not run away anymore and he will not initate conversation with my character either.

I have also accepted the smuggling quest but I haven't even entered the Crown and Lion pub yet.

has anyone found the console command to reset the smugglers portion, so you can turn in the guards portion. Seems dumb that I am a murderer but haven't killed anyone but smugglers. maybe this will be modded soon but doubt it will fix an already broken quest line

Seems to be bugged in the PC version, I have attempted the quest 3 times now and only once did all go well.

I have done things the same way each time going after the thugs and killing several groups of them all the while giving chase the suspicious character.

Eventually he runs into the abandon house and I must go talk to Constable Aiden , he tells me there must be a guard to get a key from.

Problem is there is no guard, strange thing is there was a guard on my first attempt at this quest and I killed him to get the key he seems to have gotten lost.

I suppose I will just skip it and wait till someone releases the console commands or a patch to fix this.

Yeah... that's a bit annoying. Aidan keeps telling me, "I have nothing to say to you". I guess apparently, you're supposed to follow the "suspicious guy" but when I got too close to him he attacked me, I killed him, and Now it's all sorts of screwy. Fix please!

I have the same problem like the most of you:

I've helped the city guards but I had the smuggler quests too. When I finished the quest for the city guard I still had the innkeeper part of the smuggler quests so I finished it and now everyone calls me a murderer.

As a solution to this wouldn't be possible to with the help of the "toolset" change so that you've never done the smuggler quests so the city guard won't hate you cuz of this bug?

I've got the same problem with the suspicious character. It solved when i killed a 5th group of smugglers in the house with the smugglers secret passage.

Seems like the classy thing to do would be acknowledge the bug, advise on the best action for the flavours listed above, and let us know that a patch is on the way. Otherwise, I assume, all we can do is sit here wondering if this will/won't be fixed? I hope ME3 is of better quality. Not sure about further content for DA...

OK. On the PC - I have not spoken to the bartender, but went with Law and Order. After four bands of people killed, the shady character dude stopped moving and/or responding properly. I went to leave the city - got attacked by another bad. After dispatching them, the shady dude ran into the abandoned building. Found a trapdoor - need key. Went back to the mission guy, told him I had them at the abandoned house. He mentioned a guard. The guard was more smugglers - they have the key to the trapdoor in the abandoned house. For those who take both missions or have the murderer thing going on - sorry, no help here.

Happened to me too. An arrow is over the commander's head near the city entrance after I killed the smugglers, but he has 'nothing to say to me'.
