Nathaniel ended up being my favorite character in Awakening. Both for what he is (and the initial friction with my Cousland Warden-Commander) and the story he brought with him (that the Howes were once great, until Tim Curry).

Instead, I'll have to add him to my ever-growing list of BioWare men that I wanted to romance, but couldn't.

Canderous, Bao-Dur, Loghain, Teagan, Zaeed, etc...

Why do you hate me, BioWare?  Image IPB

Heh, I expected to find one or two blistering threads on the recycling of Bann Sexy's VA for a much less god-like role.

I recognized several of the VAs, but he's the only one that gave me a gut reaction.  The voice just screams TEAAAGAAAN!

Wait.... who has the same VA as Bann Sexy? And how have I missed this? I recognized the guy who did Murdoch (I think). Thank god the same VA who did Jowan isn't all over the place again

Edited to add: Hell yes, now that I have played more, Nate would definitely be romanced. So would Anders. I'd once again have another menage à trois on my hands

Like the 4 people above me I've had no problem with Nathaniel. He was at first upset but after talking to his sister who didn't say anything negative, even made the remark about her father being to blame, he's really been very nice. I'm actually liking Nathaniel. Makes me wonder if he's the 1 that Rendon Howe was talking about when you first meet him in the beginning of HNF in Origins. There where 2 sons that's mentioned in this game but 1 died.

That's Thomas, and I figure he must be the one who's referred to as dying in battle.  Which is a little odd, since he was supposed to be "quite a bit younger" than your PC.

IIRC, he was told his brother Thomas died "in the war."  Doesn't necessarily mean he was a combatant.

And add me to the list of Nathaniel lovers!  Talent-wise, he was basically a duplicate of my rogue archer PC, so I respecced him as a DW rogue and he's been a beast in combat.  He certainly doesn't die nearly as often as Oghren (ugh, when do I get another warrior so I can stick Oghren's ass in the keep for good?!).  He's also so easy to gain favor with, it's ridiculous--I think I've given him all of 2 gifts.

Some soldier guy in the Keep.  The one who gives you the quest for the hunters' pit.

Murdock's VA does the seneschal and I've caught him on a minor voice or two as well.

I liked Nathaniel.

I thought the dynamic between him and a noble PC was very interesting. Here was a guy who was entirely blameless, who like many children finds it difficult to see the crazy in his dad, and finds it easier to blame you instead of him. In many ways it is a coming of age story for little Nathaniel.

Of course the story was far too short for this growth to really come through. Nathaniel went from "I want to murder you" to "Your wish is my COMMAND" in about 20 minutes.

Someone sounded a lot like Isolde at some point and it really freaked me out. I can't remember who, though. Maybe the baroness?

yeah, the pacing on relationships in this game was really off-kilter. I had Nate and Anders like personal quest ready as soon as I finished the intro mission. That and apparently Anders bugged to "Love" and I don't think my husband would approve. ;)

That and I had ONE conversation with Sigrun at Vigil's keep and got +100 approval. 100? WTF

So now SHE shows at 100 NEUTRAL?

/end rant.

I think your thinking of Ser Lady Tamren, the Knight who warns you of the conspiracy against you I believe.

Her VA is Cauthrien, no?  Same as Mhairi?

I must really suck at finding gifts in this game, because all my companions are completely "meh" about me.  Oghren hates me most of all.  It wasn't so long ago that he was going to be the warrior I taught him to be, now he could care less.

Oghren's become completely bitter--and off-putting.  Comments he would have laughed off (or laughed at) in DA:O cause you to lose approval in Awakening.

What conversations?!  I must really be missing something.  I've completely gone through three locations on the map, and I've had a total of one conversation (after their initial recruiting) with my NPCs that I consider a significant character development.  That was Anders and his cat.  Charming, and right now Anders hates me least, but the others just have nothing to say other than superficial stuff.

Edit:  Ok, two.  Nathaniel and his sister, that was big.

This is only semi-related, but for the HN before the Howe Battle, there should have been a Princess Pride reference...In fact, it would have been the perfect time for it...

"My name is ____ Cousland, you killed my father, prepare to die!"

Would have been the most epic line ever spoken by a PC in any game...

Yeah, I'm losing approval with him left and right for basically being the same smartass he liked in Origins.  What.

**Spoilers Below**

Nate is my second favorite companion in DA:A. I just couldn't hate him though I expected my Cousland to wanna hang him outright but when you meet him he's honest (which Valora respected as its her defining trait) and admits he planned on laying a trap for you and will probably come back to do it again if you let him go. I conscripted him on the spot and never regretted it. He's been out the country and that he worshipped his dad becomes apparent after talking to him for a while.

Frankly Howe didn't deserve to be this young man's father or have his devotion.

LOL and the line about "Some of my best friends have wanted me dead" cracked me up!

I must say that Nathaniel Howe has become my favorite character, even more so then Anders. He is truly sincere and noble. He is also humble enough to admit when he is wrong.

Being a Cousland, I will admit that I had to think about whether I should hang him or not. Then I thought about what I went through in Origins, being falsely accused and hunted, and my family being falsely accused. I had the chance to redeem my name and that of my family's. So I thought he should have the opportunity as well. After all, it was his father who ruined his families reputation not him, and he is not responsible for his father's actions. I haven't finished the game yet, but I hope in some way his participation in the grey wardens helps restore some of his family's honor.

I talked to him about his grandmother by clicking on the portrait-did his personal quest, and had a follow up conversation to that.

The approval gains are silly in this game. I was getting 13+ a pop.

I liked Nate too. (spoilers)

I took him to the city to meet his sister and within a blink of an eye he was calling his father a jackass. If I have any complaints, I would say the conflict between my GW and him was resolved too quickly.

*Small spoilers*

So, I try to do the nice thing and let this guy live.  You know, the whole "son shouldn't suffer for the sins of the father" and all that.. And MAN I have been regreting it ever since!  Everytime this man opens his emo mouth to complain about how his family is being mistreated, I wish that had let him swing earlier in the game.  Now, I'm just hoping that he tries something stupid so that I can cut his ****ing head off.  LOL.

There's two items right early in the game you can get to change his view, rapidly. And once you meet his sister... his entire tune has changed for me.

He's actually VERY likable now.

I actually found the way he talked in the dungeon about just wanting his family things from the keep making me compare the fall of the Howes to the fall of the Couslands. Nate's father murdered his own family just as thoroughly as mine.

As a Cousland, I recruited him also. And like others have said before me, he just needs time to deal with the fact that he has lost everything.

Eventually, I grew to love him. Nate's is a wonderful, complex, character and I really hope they make that Romance pack and include him in it.

Just give the guy a chance, he grows on you. He's noble (by character) and loves his family, How could that ever be wrong?

I recruited him and after completing the game I can say with confidence he is tied with Oghren for the top spot, once he hears it from his sister (and the random interactions) he fully agrees his father was in the wrong and him and him alone that dragged the Howe family name through the mud.
