Right at the beginning of the game, at the ceremony, I'm supposed to assign soldiers to either the city, the farms or the roads. What kind of consequences are there for choosing one over the other?

i chose to protect them all equally.

Near the end of the game the darkspawn will attack both Virgil Keep and the city at once. I chose to focus on saving the city and not sacriicing it to save my keep from a massive darkspawn horde.

Which was good since by then my keep was as well off as could be. Granite dwarfen made walls (granite deposite + 80,000 gold), Dwarven proofing the darkspawn basement enterance to the keep (quest), and equiping all my soldiers in Silverine armor (ironically found it also in basement). All of that lead to a epic holding action at the Keep apparently in the end credits that saved everyone besides some no named characters (aka soldiers).

I havnt really experimented with the other options yet but i did rather well just covering all the area's at once.

I protected the roads. At the end stayed and protected Amaranthine. And even with all upgrades possible on Vigil Keep, it fell after (I guess it said) a couple weeks. All the characters I didn't have in my party died. the Militia pretty much wiped out.

I want my gold back from reinforcing those walls haha.

lol ironic all my chacacters that i left behind stayed alive. Maybe I did a few things you didnt in regards of renforcing the keep.

I mean the walls take three things 1st money for proper workers 2nd Granite desposite. And you have to seal off the basement else the keep will just get pwned from the inside (walls wont matter), and get Wade to equip your guys with silver armor at least what i did. (also got them Iron ore and other ore deposites too for wade to work with).

So, the choice in the beginning has no consequence on the final battle or what ?

havnt tried it multiple times to find out....

I'd imagine the city would be easier to save if you placed all your men there but i didnt need the additional help.

Wait, what did you choose? (I'm talking about the choice at the beginning of the game, 'cos there's no option to protect everyone equally)

ya there is last one down. basically states assigning men evenly to alll of them the farms, the city and the roads.  Fairly sure it was the last option at the bottom.
