Awakening is a great expansion.  I love the new companions and hearing their banter.  I love that they react to points of interest in the environment; more so than in Origins.  I love the plot; it's a very different feel from Origins.  In Origins you went around Ferelden gathering the necessary leaders to fight the Blight; in Awakening, you are the leader who has to fight the new darkspawn menace.  I love the new city, Amaranthine.  Amaranthine feels so much more like a city than Denerim did.  I love the large amount of side quests (I haven't played them yet, but I did look through them in the table of contents of the strategy guide);  there are almost as many in Awakening as there are in Origins.  My only complaint is that I wish there were more new passive abilities;  I play on the 360, and since I can only have 6 hot-keyed abilities, I prefer to spend my points on passive abilities.

I love this expansion.  It's such a fresh experience.  It's different than Origins, but this is in NO WAY a bad change.  Sure, there are people who will subjectively validate themselves and say that any change to what they love is bad change, but if you liked Origins and understand that change is necessary for improvement then you will like this expansion.

The developers deserve praise for this well-made expansion and I am very excited for what they have planned next; I just hope I don't have to wait until February 1, 2011!  Thank you developers for another great addition to the Dragon Age universe.  You have won a fan for life.  Image IPB

You know I have to agree with you. Awakenings wasn't perfect but it was still a great expansion. There was plenty to do, it didn't really feel rushed to me as others have posted. Although romance was a big part of Origins I'm actually glad they took it out of Awakenings. It makes sense to be focused on the task at hand rather than fighting with approval ratings. My only gripe about it is this. The cameo's were too short. Alistair's 30 second "Oh hai there gotta run bai!!" to Wynne only talking to you to give you a quest. I kind of felt the intereaction could have been a bit longer or in depth but it didnt bother me enough to stop playing.

Who is deciding that improvement if even needed, for what purpose? Not continuing on a fantastic story-line is a necessary change? Who decided that would increase sales? Let the reviews and sales speak for themselves. Origins is one the best RPGs out there; most everyone just loves the game, in an almost insane way. I do not see this love with Awakening, quite the contrary. Almost all of these posts are from people who are so disappointed because the expansion in no way compliments DA:O. You can only call it an 'improvement' if it actually does improve something.

Hate to break it to you, but right after DA:O came out if you came anywhere near the forums you would have thought it must be the worst game in existence. This is pretty typical after any game gets released (or it is for us, perhaps, I don't hang around on other companies' forums very much) -- RPG fans are pretty passionate about what they like and don't like, and the ones that don't like tend to post again and again and again and again. Why? That's for a Psychology major to explore, I suppose.

It would be easy to assume that those posting on this forum represent the majority. That, however, simply isn't true. If you spend enough time on the forums, however, it's easy to believe that it must be. It's all the evidence you're exposed to, after all. But if you honestly believe that, you're only fooling yourself.

Indeed. Sage advice.

Totally subjective opinion that I would disagree with.  I believe this to be the minority opinion so far based on Metacritic reviews.

Finished the game not ten minutes ago, and just had to drop in to agree *g*. There were a couple of things I didn't like, but on the whole? Very nifty expansion with a lot to offer. (And I have to say, I liked it more than Throne of Bhaal. Dragon Age gets one step closer to dethroning Baldur's Gate as my favourite RPG series.) I think the writing for the new companions was somehow even better than the banter in the original game. I found that the new conversation system worked really well for me - I still got to talk to my companions, but without going down a list of questions every time we were in camp.

And Mr. Gaider is correct - right after DAO was released there were a huge number of threads on the forums complaining about ... um, everything, pretty much. I remember one guy who declared the game was terrible and he was taking it back to the shop because the camera view didn't zoom in far enough.

It's because those that enjoy it are too busy playing the game to post on forums.

BTW- That was a rhetorical question.

The reviews I read prior to purchasing DA:O were VERY positive, that's why I decided to buy it and I was not disappointed by any means.

What I just cannot fathom is, how the gaming industry can have such a pompous attitude toward their market base and continue to be profitable? I just cannot believe how you respond to your customers when they have complaints about the products they purchase. Having the "If you don't like it, too bad - just don't buy it" or " We're taking the romance and story-lines you loved so much (and produced such great sales for us) out of the games, just get over it" attitude is just unacceptable. I have never seen a corporation take this sort of complacent approach towards its customers. I could only image if I were out shopping for a vehicle and I complained about a missing feature and was told by the salesperson "We don't have that feature on the car anymore, we decided it wasn't necessary any loner (even though it was the most popular feature on the car), you just need to get over it". I would expect that sales person to be looking for another job and I would be looking elsewhere for a car with features I loved and found necessary.

You are exactly right about people coming on the forums and ripping the game.  I must say I was so disappointed in everyone.  It's like because you make damn fine games everyone expects you to make a perfect game everytime.  I personally didn't enjoy this as much as Dragon Age:Origins or Mass Effect 2, however, that doesn't make it a bad game.  To the contrary for an expansion it was fantastic and was absolutely worth every penny of my 40 dollars.  Do I wish it was slightly less money?  Sure, but that doesn't mean I should sit here and rip a game that I will easily log 60 hours on (considering I've logged almost 240 hours in DA:O).  But the fact of the matter is that this expansion is a higher quality game than most full games that are out there *cough* Final Fantasy XIII *cough*.

Fact of the matter, David Gaider, is if you guys at Bioware continue to put out the quality games that I expect from you, then you will continue to have a first day buyer out of me.  You guys are fantastic and I hope you know that far more people appreciate your work than hate it.  Thank you for this fun expansion and I can't wait to find out for sure what that 2/1/2011 teaser is all about.  Oh, and MOAR BOOKS.

These are my exact sentiments. I've already played about 3-4 hours of it and I've been quite satisfied with it. My HNF married Alistair and I feel that the touch on our relationship was just enough to be appropriate since you know, there ARE things other than romance that's going on. I like all the new companions (albeit I do miss being able to talk to them whenever I want) and I've had a lot of good LOL moments with Oghren.

Overall, so far, I love Awakenings- and its not because I'm a Bioware fangirl. I actually ENJOY the game. But it's also the negative voices that shout the highest, generally, and I refused to take that into account and play the game myself.

Bioware has not had an attitude towards customers.  In fact, I think they've been very nice considering all the disrespect that is flung at them on these message boards.  Having played Awakening and been a huge fan of Origins, I can tell you that Awakening lives up to Origins' expectations.  Now that the game is out, no one has an excuse to make baseless and hateful accusations without having played the game.  You say to let the sales and reviews speak for the game; I saw let the game speak for itself.  Image IPB

Btw, can't we all be friends?

You example doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Why would a salesperson lose his job for something he can not do something about? Why would a salesperson have any input whatsoever about what is put in a car.
I do agree with your flawed example though, it's precisely one of the reasons I like these forums. It isn't run entirely by marketing. I guess some people prefer to get their asses kissed all the time, some of us prefer to get more interesting information instead.

Game design is a complex creative process.

I don't think it is as simple as "add in high quality romance feature" or "add in high quality continuation of DA:O companion storylines".

Eh. I'm liking it. But then I'm the sorta guy who's happy with any story as long as it's not filled with contradictions and retcons. Awakening doesn't contradict my story so I'm happy to experience the new stuff.

I can understand people's concerns if they are are having technical problems. Glitches and sloppy presentation means that the game loses some serious points for me. Complaints of this nature have a serious point. The bugs are unnacceptable.

But whining because characters you liked not returning is just utter childishness. The "get over it" attitude is perfectly acceptable when talking about storyline elements. Seriously, just get over it.

EDIT: Ok so Metacritic only has 7 reviews up at the moment for the PC version but so far it's looking quite positive.

I don't know what planet you are living on but corporations, musicians and even governments do this quite often.

Americans want health care reform, congress sits on their hands.
Favourite underground band gets signed and changes their sound.
Banks blow all of your money doing bad busniess and the tax payers cover the cost.

The difference is that DA:OA is a game. No one is forcing you to buy it. It's made by people who , yes, want to make a profit. Profit means a job. A job means food and shelter. Food and shelter means staying alive. They aren't harming anyone by adding more to the story, going in a different direction or taking a romance option out of a game.

Try enjoying the game for what it is, not what you think it should be. It's not like they didn't put out the details of Awakening long before it was ever released.

And really, if you want a romance option just turn off the game and make it happen.

Who is deciding that improvement is even needed

We do.

Origins is one the best RPGs out there; most everyone just loves the game, in an almost insane way. I do not see this love with Awakening, quite the contrary. Almost all of these posts are from people who are so disappointed because the expansion in no way compliments DA:O.

Let the reviews and sales speak for themselves.

Indeed. Sage advice.

So who will refund my full purchase price on opened used software if I am not pleased with it?

Well, you could buy it used from Gamestop and have that 7 day return policy (for consoles).  This is all assuming that you don't absolutely love it  Image IPB

This game is DOPE. I am only a couple hours into it, but its everything I was hoping for and then some. I was a little upset about something early in the game, but hopefully that will play out like I hope as more of the story passes.

Overall score thus far: B+, which will rise to an A no doubt as the story progresses.

Obviously, a planet that has far more intelligent lifeforms then where you come from. Since when is a government a corporation? Because you subscribe to the same "if you don't like our products, don't buy them" philosophy, I would not expect you to be able to comprehend my post. Right, so the next time you need a car - don't buy one based on what you think it should be, but what you are told by the company you should want? Ok, Lemming.

Somebody picked an approriate username <_<

I'm glad the devs realise that you can only take these forums with a grain of salt. ME, ME2, DA:O... I was around the forums of the games post-release, and honestly, awakening is getting FAR less hate then any of those did, although honestly I suspect this was because people weren't convinced it was gonna be good. So by setting their expectations low they weren't disapointed.

Honestly, I'm surprised at the good feedback this has gotten, DA:O and ME2 got FAR more hate upon release, as soon as I beat Chaos Rising and GoW3, I'm replaying DA:O vanilla and then starting up Awakening... I really really wish I could start playing it right now!

Bratt get off this thread, it's a thread complimenting the game, there are threads that bash the game go post on one of those. Let those who enjoy it have someplace to talk positive about it.
