Keep Mhairi??

My question is, why would Bioware let you level a character and let decisions affect their approval rating, only to kill them off within the first 45 minutes?? I think there is a way to keep her.

Yeah, and have half of the community(before the bazaar) rage at them and refusing to buy any more BioWare games... until they come out. A bit like the L4D2 boycott. Ignorant fools, all of them.

I thought it was pretty obvious she was a red shirt from the start as her portrait has the default black background and npc party members never use that background.
Yes. "Obvious".

To fool you into thinking she is a permanent character, and then killing her for shock. Also it indicates that the Joining will kill, either as a reminder or a first time thing for people who bought both games and decided to do the expansion pack with a new character without ever having played the original game.
This, exactly.
Interestingly enough, I went to bed the night after getting it, having played just up to getting Oghren in my party. My thoughts were "man, I really like Ogreh and Anders, but that other chick is really really dull and boring. Horrible character so far. When It came to be joining time, I saw it coming, and was relieved when it happened.

So I suppose, it would makes sense for Bioware to kill every 9 out of 10 PC characters created at the joining, just to remind you that the joining maybe lethal & not every one survives.
I approve this idea.

Fair enough, obvious clearly wasn't the right word to use, but I can't be the only person that noticed that anytime you have an npc in your party who is 'temporary' they use the black background instead of one of the ones with perdy colours.

I think Sigrun is more interesting personage than Oghren.
The same I want to say about Velanna and Anders.
Maybe this is my weakness, I prefer girls companion.
Only exeption is Wynne. She is a terrible person, any nightmare is better...
But it is good that all characters are so different.
I also regret about Mhairi.
PS.
You could tell what Oghren would say on any question without the
bother of asking him.

Oddly enough, that was how I rationalized stopping and deleting the characters I created just to see each origin story.jsachun wrote...

I played through a mage, dwarf noble warrior, human noble rogue to the end, but created a dalish elf, a city elf, and a dwarf commoner that I ran to the joining, then stopped and deleted the characters.
Decided they died during the joining.
It was an opportunistic role playing loophole I thought.

I don't know what console you use, but on a PC, Daveth and Jory had yellow backgrounds (I think yellow...), not black. And Gorim had a vanilla-like color. Is it different for you?

In all fairness Gorim doesn't die, and we all knew one of them was going to die, my money was on the extra warrior who wanted to join the order so bad.SollusAzelas wrote...

Also to those saying kill off Oghren can sod off. He is one of the best characters you get.

True, but missing my point. Chazz said all temporary companions have black backgrounds, and I was just listing those I knew to have non-black backgrounds.

Dont get me wrong i like DAO as a game and its entertaining to play, but being warden doesnt really have future or glory ahead of you, unless you find dying in some deep roads ditch after being overrun by darkspawns was the dreams for how youd go.

Well, in a way i am happy for her, it stink to be a warden you get all the downside and nothing really good comes of it, you not alot better than anyone else who isnt a warden, you just sick with taint that eventually kill you, and supposed to mindlessly slay darkspawn until that day, as much as promotion for games does it job, it doesnt change the fact being wardens a bittersweet taste, and not really much future prospects in it for any happy endings.

TBH i'd rather go out in a blaze of fire and glory than dying old in a bed. So yeah, fighting an endless ammount of evil monsters that I can kill without regret until I'm overcome is a rather appealing death to me.

Less like you say you like to go out fighting thou there likely isnt much glory in it in deep roads, since only ones who might notice be legion of the dead, and they dont return to civilization to tell, so historians just gonna write whatever they want about it.
EDIT: P.S sorry for side tracking it wont happen again.
