Same problem here. Thought I'd install the patch before I ran the game the first time...

yeah the patch is no good unless u can update some micro$oft stuff it needs. unfortunately delete and reinstall was easiest for me...plenty of threads on this if u wish to read into it further.

Same happened to me. I found a solution. Go to "my computer" and click on the DVD icon. Then launch the game from there. I think it has something to do with running a 64 bit OS. I could be wrong, that's just what I've heard. Hopefully the next patch will fix this.

You need to download the latest version of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005

The file to download (if you're using XP) is vcredist_x86.exe, and, while the game DOES launch successfully, I found that it STILL crashes. For me, it's crashing when the noble youngest son is talking to his mother on the exterior landing.
I hope Biosoft clears this up soon - from what I've seen, this game is just what I've been waiting for...

You wearing blinders? These are USER forums, and the only (rare) employee participation does *NOT* relate to "support", which is strictly Electronic Arts' bailiwick!emuss wrote...

I have this problem also - had a working DA:O 1.03, bought Awakening. Installed, applied 1.04 and now nothing. Running daorigins.exe directly gives a configuration error. Uninstalling and reinstalling works if no patches are applied - 1.02, 1.03, 1.04 and Awakening all break it. Downloading and installing VC didn't change it. Running the config tool and re-saving the config didn't help. Anyone have an idea where to go from here?

You are all in the wrong forum(s). The PC Tech forum is where the OP and the several "Me, Too" commenters always belonged, and never were moved to where the thread belonged (as of this comment's time-point, it's in the General Subjects Forum).

Forum Home » Dragon Age: Origins » Dragon Age: Origins PC Technical Support
That's what I see for this thread's location. It's a tech support question, and it's in the Tech Support forum. Frankly, if the "real" tech support could solve my problem I wouldn't be here, but I keep following this theme:
- Can you reinstall it and re-patch?
- Does running daorigins.exe work?
- Can you manually remove and reinstall?
- Can you send me a screenshot of the error?
- Does uninstalling and reinstalling work?
All of the history is there to read - uninstalls, reinstalls, re-patches (using 1.02/1.03/1.04 and Awakening in various combinations). I think they get paid per e-mail sent, not per problem solved... I've done tech support in a corporate environment for about 25 years now, and if I did this I'd have been fired long ago.

**prepares to duck just in case you've already done this**
Have you installed Origins and then Awakening without installing any of the interim patches? (1.01, 1.02) Awakening automatically patches Origins to 1.03, and I've heard there are problems if you install 1.03 after installing Awakening. I'd stay away from 1.04 for now.
...and other than that, I have nothing... Wish I did...
Actually, a random thought: Do you use CCleaner at all? I'm not sure how "clean" the Dragon Age uninstaller is, or what detritus it leaves behind when you uninstall, but I'm thinking it can't hurt too much to run the "Registry" cleaning tool (after tweaking what it cleans, of course) and maybe try the whole install rigamarole again.
But then again, you've probably already done this...

I tried both patching 1.02, then Awakening, just Awakening, no Awakening at all... The game runs as 1.0, but any patch or Awakening install breaks it. Since I had 1.03 before this, my saves won't load. I also used the manual uninstall from tech support, which walks through removing all the registry entries and files. Even re-patched (per another thread) - nothing. Damn irritating...
