For all you being crashed by large scale spells and the like (Mana Clash and Holy Smite come to mind), try what this thread details: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/1835264
It seems to have helped numerous people, and would make sense, since not having enough memory being applied would cause a deficiency in the resources required for the game.
Gonna put this repost of mine from that thread here as well. These are a couple of minor things I did that seemed to be helping, as I just played a long session without any crashes, doing several battles and boss fights.
Note: You should only do these if you're running Windows Vista or Windows 7.I installed the 4GB patch and still had the same CTD issue, however I also decided to try 3 other things with my daorigins executable and as aresult played for the last 2 hours crash free:
1) Run it as administrator
2) Set the compatibility mode to Windows XP service pack 3
3) Force the game to run in dx9 mode
For those that don't know how to do this, just right click on the game's shortcut on your desktop (make one if you don't have one). The target field should read something like "C:\\Program Files\\dragon age\\bin_shi\\daorigins.exe" or the like. at the end of the line add "-dx9", without the quotes. You can change the game to run in XP sp3 compatibility mode under the compatibility tab, just select it from the drop down box.
Again I'm just saying this worked for me, as I just played for the last 2.5 hours, doing several battles and boss fights without a single CTD. Good luck.
