Eurypterid's right, Mana Clash has no problems with usage in the game as far as I can tell, so it must be something on your end.

On my end too, it seems. Funny though, DAO was running so smoothly pre 1.03... not a single crash during 3 playthroughs. And you might be surprised, but I haven't changed anything "on my end" since then. Same PC specs, same OS, same keyboard! I dunno though maybe my PC got infiltrated by geth? What else "on my end" could turn a previously stable spell into Mana Crash? :wizard:

Like many others here I don't crash 100% of the time I use Mana Clash. I may crash 3-4 times in a row, then play for an hour or so, then fps gradually lowers, then it lags during looting, and then eventually it all ends with "DAO not responding".

About 50% of the times when I use Mana Clash the game crashes, for me that's the only time my game crashes. There's no other spells/abilities that cause a crash.

I played trough the original game without a single crash ever and I used Mana Clash a lot.

I have done no changes to any of my computers drivers, it's the exact same as when I played trough the original story.

I have no mods installed, only the normal DLC from Bioware and I had that when I played trough the Original story. Only change is that I've installed patch 1.03 and Awakening.

Is everyone who crashes playing on the Steam version of Dragon Age?
A friend of mine crashes and he uses Steam, whereas I have no problem and I'm using the normal digital distribution version.

No, not everyone. Digital version from EA Store here, and I still crash.

I have the retail version of Awakening and still Mana Clash crashes the game. Not always, but I'd say about a 50% of the times I cast it. It only happens with Mana Clash. I haven't tried Origins after patch 1.03, but in Awakening I can say it for sure -- the only crashes I experimented are the ones caused by Mana Clash.

LoL spells? I can stand still and crash. I can be in a conversation and crash. Sten can be taking a sh*t in the party camp and I'll crash. Basically after a few short minutes 3-5 usually I'll crash. Before patch 1.3 I haven't seen anyone posting about crash issues. After patch 1.3 the forums are exploding with posts about crashing / and what seems like a long list of other issues. It's the patch end of conversation.

We should make a club. Or have a party.  I'm in the same boat as you.  Pre 1.03, everything was fine.  Now, you cross your fingers and hope you can get the whole way through a fight so you can hurry and save before crashing...again..again.  And it's not like I have some pos comp that can't handle a little work.  It won't even be at 100% and DA drops into the void.  FPS will be mid 50-60's and DA drops into the void.  I swung my sword at a cockroach, DA drops into the void.  I haven't even started DAA yet.  Starting to think the best idea would be to take it back.  Who wants to mess with new content when you crash so often you have to do everything 3x's before you get the whole way through it?

And for the record, Gamestop disk version.  And wtf @ that shoddy packaging?  That disk case is more flimsy than a gum wrapper.

I think the worst part is that I have no idea what is causing my crashes.  Their very inconsistent.  I played for 5 hours yesturday before getting a single crash.  Today, I've had 4 crashes in the last hour.  Same group, same tactics, same gear, using the same spells - cuz I'm lazy and hardly ever update my tactics.  No mana clash even trained on the mages.

I thought patches were supposed to FIX things?

I'm pretty sure Awakening doesn't have anything to do with it, except that the Awakening install installs the 1.03 patch.

I am also afflicted by Mana Crash.  Pre 1.03 smooth as silk..  now, it's getting to be a chore.

For me it seems to be Mana Crash and the auto-saves when changing zones that cause the most crashes.

For me, it's Holy Smite.  Alistair sets that off, and my computer says that it was nice knowing me. :D

For all you being crashed by large scale spells and the like (Mana Clash and Holy Smite come to mind), try what this thread details: social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/58/index/1835264

It seems to have helped numerous people, and would make sense, since not having enough memory being applied would cause a deficiency in the resources required for the game.

Gonna put this repost of mine from that thread here as well. These are a couple of minor things I did that seemed to be helping, as I just played a long session without any crashes, doing several battles and boss fights.

Note: You should only do these if you're running Windows Vista or Windows 7.

I installed the 4GB patch and still had the same CTD issue, however I also decided to try 3 other things with my daorigins executable and as aresult played for the last 2 hours crash free:

1) Run it as administrator
2) Set the compatibility mode to Windows XP service pack 3
3) Force the game to run in dx9 mode

For those that don't know how to do this, just right click on the game's shortcut on your desktop (make one if you don't have one). The target field should read something like "C:\\Program Files\\dragon age\\bin_shi\\daorigins.exe" or the like. at the end of the line add "-dx9", without the quotes. You can change the game to run in XP sp3 compatibility mode under the compatibility tab, just select it from the drop down box.

Again I'm just saying this worked for me, as I just played for the last 2.5 hours, doing several battles and boss fights without a single CTD. Good luck.

I'm also suffering from Mana Clash crashes, but it's the only spell that seems to cause problems. I only got problems since I installed Awakening, but I hadn't installed 1.03 before that. I had no problems whatsoever before I patched/installed the expansion pack.

3 playthroughs in Origins, not a single crash.

Now, in awakening i get a CTD when casting mana clash. Or, blame Anders :)
It happens more often than not. Am going to stay away from it and see if anything else might be the culprit.
(which is hard to do, as Anders' +150% spirit dmg makes mana clash a beast.)

Update: After not using mana clash, the crashes have stopped.

Similar problems, only pre-1.03 problem was the load times. I did a complete play through that was otherwise just dandy. (I also handled ME2 just fine so I am confident my rig is still up to snuff, if getting a bit long in the tooth these days)

Anyway, post patch:

I still have long load times (granted they are not the same INCREASINGLY longer times, they are just long from the first one on).

I have some crashes, although nowhere near as frequent as others. I only had one crash tonight, it's trigger was Alistairs "cleanse area" ability. (A trigger I saw mentioned in another thread)

I have chronic screen flicker that goes away if I adjust anything in the video settings then return to game. It comes back eventually, but is 'fixable' if I go back and change the settings again. At least it does not require a full restart of the game, but still annoying.

quick update:

Just played for about an hour and had a crash after no discernable trigger event. I was traveling infact and had just completed the Mage Collective encounter "Have you Seen Me" and was continuing my travel. I completed the same quest last night (pre-crash) with no problem.

I also used "cleanse area" twice today without the crash I got last night.

I've been playing computer games since my first text adventures on the Radio Shack TSR-80 but I am certainly no tech expert, especially compared to all the youngsters who are growing up with modern rigs as there only basis. Anyway, I hope someone can put this puzzle together and get a fix soon!

Mana Clash is definitely the cause of my crash to desktop. I can play DA:O for hours with no problem as long as i avoid this one spell. The moment i cast it, just before the effect occurs my computer stops, i hear the DVD spin up like it's trying to access something on the disk and crash to desktop.

I just got mana clash for Morrigan and have noticed this crashing immediately.

It only crashes for me about 25% of the time though.

Mana Clash causes crashes for me too. Currently the only crashes I get are when magic is used. It doesn't seem to crash if it's a fresly loaded game. I also experienced a crash when using a death hex/cloud combo.

Not to argue with those seeing this issue--but just to give another data point:

1. I'm testing DA:O and DA:A with 1.03 on a laptop with XP SP3, 4GB memory, and an NVidia Quadro NVS 160M - my primary gaming system is still on 1.02. DX9, latest redistributable version, installed.

2. On this rig I've had many CTD, but usually at unpredictable times, and never from Mana Clash.

3. I made both fixes for getting 32-bit XP and DA to use >2GB of memory (changed boot.ini and patched the header of daorigins.exe with CFF_Explorer) and my CTD issues have almost vanished.

So, for XP the system (even with middle-of-the-road graphics) appears to be much more stable with the ability to access up to 3GB of memory instead of 2GB.

In order to narrow down the issues, I'd recommend that anyone posting in this thread ensure they include the details of: 1. OS (e.g., Win7 64 bit), 2. physical memory, 3. Graphics hardware, 4. any mods installed other than BW DLC, 5. Any other actions taken related to this, whether they that seem to have helped or not helped (such as patching the daorigins.exe executable to use >2GB memory)

My crashes have been limited to spells/abilities which affect another mage's mana, primarily Mana Clash (lol Mana Crash more like) and whatever the top level templar ability is.

For reference I'm running on Windows 7 x64, 8GB memory, and twin NVidia GTX 280s, and like many (if not all) of the other posters here I only had problems post-1.03

Also having this problem, i didnt realise it was Mana Clash causing the problem, and I haven't even started Awakening yet, this is just in Origins.

Even patch 1.04 didn't cure Mana Clash. It's still too powerful for the game to handle.

It crashed immediately when i casted it on Gaxkang.

Holy Smite is also effected by crashes. It seems to me that crashes occur once you cast many spells at once, e.g. if you're fighting gaxkang, baroness etc. Why wasn't this fixed while testing the patch? After 5 months BioWare wasn't able to fix this?!

To reproduce: Just cast Mana Clash on some enemy mage. If the crash doesn't occur the first time, you're lucky; try it a few times afterwards.

This "bug" is an issue of the game; it doesn't have anything to do with your system, graphic drivers, directx version etc. I don't know how BioWare was testing this "patch", but apparently it crashes your game more often than 1.03 did!

Apparently, having an entire skill not work properly isn't a big enough bug to correct, but changing the fonts around to correct load screen hints is. I guess this is why I'm not a professional game developer!

I too am experiencing CtD with Mana Clash, it's probably as high as 75% of the time it's cast that it CtD.

However incidence is much higher when cast and other spells are going on at the same time. I often like to stack Grease/Earthquake with Tempest/Blizzard etc so it could be the resources being drained.

In addition the last Templar ability (Holy Smite?) also causes CtD although on a less frequent occurrence, again stacking of spells raises the frequency.

Never had a problem pre 1.03, although incidence is much higher with 1.04.  However the spells are late in the ability trees, so I may just be needing to use them more often.

I have no mods, no Awakening and have downloaded RtO & WK. I also have the limited edition downloads and tSP.
