The only thing that changed on my computer since the uninstallation and reinstallation of DA:O was my video card(currently a ATI 5770). What the hell is the problem and why hasn't this been fixed yet?
Sorry you're having trouble. First off all, I don't quite agree with the above... many things have undoubtedly changed on your computer. You've run programs, downloaded things, ran Windows Update... and of course, installed a new graphics card.
First off I would suggest you make sure you're running the latest ATI drivers, and I would suggest doing a clean uninstall/reinstall of them. There's a link in my sig with more info. Once they're installed, I would turn any enhancements off and use only the in-game graphics settings.
Hard to advise any more without seeing your hardware specs, etc.
Best,
RI

I've done a clean install of the ATI drivers loooooong before I reinstalled DA:O. I've probably done more things than you can come up with, even going so far as to try a .dll that emulates dx9 in the hopes the problem might be directx hardware related, but to no avail. This bug has persisted for months, with various other threads having people mention crashing when a spell is cast, with the crashes happening the most frequently in the Circle of Magi. And so far, the only solution I know that works is to patch up to 1.02a and stop. But that prevents me from playing Awakenings, which means that it isn't really a solution at all.

I used it extensively on Origins and never crashed.

I've tried to duplicate the issue in as many scenarios as possible and came to this conclusion: My game only crashes when I cast Mana Clash at the start of a battle on a mage that's also casting a spell. Because Mana Clash almost gaurentee's a 1 shot kill against a mage, could the game be bugging because the AI's auto-spells, such as entry battle buffs, are not being cast?
My Stats (All drivers up-to-date):
AMD Quad-core 955 OC-3.6Gh/z
8GB G.Skill memory 7-7-7-21
GTX 460 (no OC)
1 64GB SSD (Boot), 2TB HDD (Data)
All DLC installed (with deluxe edition on Steam) and patched to 1.04

Start dragon age
Change Video option to windowed mode (optional but will prevent crash from out full screening)
press simultaneously
Ctrl shift esc
go to processes find DAorigins.exe
right click on it set affinity and just select / deselect the relevant cores.
may need to be admin on vista/7 to do this
close task manager and go back to DA put it back in full screen and play
Hope this helps

Anyone finding this thread looking for a fix - i seemed to of solved the issue by forcing Dragon age to use only cores 2 and 3 on my quad core system to do this
Start dragon age
Change Video option to windowed mode (optional but will prevent crash from out full screening)
press simultaneously
Ctrl shift esc
go to processes find DAorigins.exe
right click on it set affinity and just select / deselect the relevant cores.
may need to be admin on vista/7 to do this
close task manager and go back to DA put it back in full screen and play
Hope this helps
any way to lock this in so that we dont have to keep setting the affinity every single time we play?

You will find if Sami Jo says something about the game, or gives directions, it is a good idea to follow them because she REALLY knows her stuff on this game.
