Speaking as a console user, the fact that they come in generations is the reason I prefer them. I'm not interested in tinkering with my gaming machine, I just want it to run. With a console, I know I'm buying something that will be the standard for years, and I won't have to worry about hardware specs anymore.
That could easily be solved by making console games with different graphics/performance settings, just like PC games. They might even make the game automatically recognize your console hardware and adjust the graphics settings accordingly. You wouldn't have to tinker with anything, but those who have paid for the latest version of the console (and those who have the latest PC components) would get their money's worth.
Many PC users think the way you do. They want to buy a PC and not have to tinker with it. That's why PC games have settings that allow them to be played on older machines.
