No Sound at all...

I posted a post in the investigating audio cut-out problems thread, but it seems to me that my issue is different from that.

In general, the first time I run ME2, I get splash screen audio, then lose 100% of all sound as soon as the press any key screen comes up. This lack of all audio persists through all parts of the game; movies, cutscenes, and gameplay... including 0 music, sound effects, or speech.

I say 'the first time', but perhaps I should say something like 'every other time' or something; I rarely reboot my PC, only if I install something, uninstall something, or am troubleshooting problems (this sound issue has caused me quite a few reboots lately).

If I quit the game and immediately run it again, I *usually* get normal sound. Usually, but not always... sometimes it takes a second quit/restart of the game to get that sound back.

And today, the issue that caused me to actually register and post this post out of frustration, I tried 11 times in a row to play the game, but couldn't get sound at all. Today was the 4th time I tried to reboot the PC (after audio failure #5) in order to get some sound in my game.

I have checked all of my hardware and drivers, it is all functioning properly.
I checked my ME2 configuration file (yet again), and it seems to be set properly.
I tested tons of other applications, and all function properly.

I even tried running windows media player in the background to see if the entire PC audio is getting cut off, and nope; it continued to play music while the logo/splash screen sound effects fired off, and then while the game went dead silent it was still playing music. I don't often (ever!) run music in the background while playing a game - I far prefer the soundtrack and sound effects of the game itself; this was just a test.

Until now, I have never had audio issues of any kind with this PC. I use onboard sound, not a card, and it works wonderfully for me.

I have seen a few posts here and on other forums alluding to this same issue, but until now have seen no actual way to fix it or resolve the problem beyond "quit and restart until it works"... which is not satisfactorary to me.

Old drivers????

You have really posted very little detailed information from which to make any sort of recommendation. Please post your system specs, both hardware and software.

For example the information for a Video card:

EVGA nVidia GTX 260, Core Clock 626, Shader Clock 1350, memory clock 1053, ForceWare 197.13

Please post this for you MB, CPU, Chipset, Audio, network, OS, DirectX, C++, ME2, etc.

Thanks for the info. Both those drivers are OK. There are newer ones for both. I am using the Realtek 2.45 (6.0.1.6069) that was released this week. Realtek updates their driver about once a month or more it seems.

1. Do you have your speakers configured as simple stereo in Windows? If not give this a try.

2. Do you have OpenAL (Open Audio Library) package installed? This may have been stealth installed by another game.

3. Have you updated to the February 2010 DirectX from Microsoft?

1. I use stereo speakers, actually configured as 'headphones' - though I am using actual speakers.

2. I don't think so... how can I be sure?

3. Yes, I did upgrade to the newer DirectX

and thanks for the assistance!

Control Panel -> Programs and look for OpenAL in the list of installed programs

Would you consider trying the RealTek 2.45 driver that was released this week?

I am upgrading now, just because... but I think I have solved the issue.

Well, it isn't solved, but I found a reliable work-around.

I had pinned the actual application to my task bar as a shortcut; I hate using launchers... I already have to sit for 30 seconds to a minute of wasted time for the intro videos which aren't skippable... why waste another minute or so bringing up a launcher when I only want to play, not use the config or check for updates, etc?

But occasionally I do use the launcher (run from the program files folder in the start menu)... and I noticed yesterday that the 3 or 4 times I had used the launcher, the sound always worked on the first try. So I spent a few hours running the game and quitting, and found that starting from the launcher seems to always work.

It is a pain in the ass and I would rather skip it, but the extra minute or so with the launcher and guaranteed sound is faster than hoping I'll get sound on the 2nd or 3rd restart from a direct shortcut.

So, I am upgrading the sound drivers and will test the direct shortcut again after I install them, but I do have a work-around if that doesn't fix it.

I'll see if I can duplicate your issue.

- edit - I was able to duplicate your no sound problem one time when I ran the ME2 executable pinned to the task bar.

very interesting; so why is it sporadic, I wonder? I can roughly half the time get sound from the direct link, though sometimes it seems less than 50%. But I do always get it with enough continued restarts. But from the launcher, I always have sound, at least in the past few days I have always had sound from the launcher.

Very odd.

I may be resurrecting a zombie thread, but I wanted to chime in that I am another customer who occasionally gets no sound when launching the game directly, instead of using the launcher, from the taskbar.

My experiences mirror karossii's, so while I will use his work around of putting up with the launcher, I will also hope this problem is fixed before ME3.
