Please be more specific. Difficulty level, class, character level would all be helpful. Also, who have you got in your party?

Do you have a healer? Makes life easier if you give the first mage you get some healing spells as soon as you can, including your pc, with a dedicated healer there's no reason for people to keep dying, the healer could probably do a fair ammount of damage too for some fights, but that depends on your tactics.

If you're a warrior tank, you need enough Str for your armours and weapons and put the rest in dex.

If you're a 2h warrior, just dump everything into Str.

A mage wants a lot of magic and some willpower. I'm not sure how to figure that one out, I just always dumped most in magic with willpower about 10 under.

Cunning Rogues need, well, enough strength and dex for equips, and the rest in cunning.

Archer Rogues just need a whole lot of dex.

I only play on normal mode, so if someone wants to explain exactly where he should dump his stat points, feel free. Also, it helps to have a good understanding of the tactics system. That's the real difference between life and death.

Health increases on its own when you level up, and you can always heal. Potions are very powerful, dedicated healers are even more powerful. Constitution doesn't increase the effectiveness of healing effects, nor does it reduce the amount of damage you take, it just very slightly delays the inevitable. Add some constitution if you are getting one-shot by powerful enemies, but beyond that it's a waste.

High defense, armor and spell resistance will help you much more than a little more health.

Also, just in case you didn't know, when someone dies, they take on an injury - injuries do things like lower will power, or constitution, etc. but they effectively make it more likely that a character will die again. And the more you accumulate, the worse the effect. Just thought that that might also be contributing to your dying problem.

To get rid of injuries, to go to camp, get the Cleansing Aura spell for Spirit Healers, or use injury kits in the inventory screen.

It also depends on who you have in your party, make sure that everyone has a lot of constitution which is your health, make sure to always keep at least one mage with the healing ability (in case of a potion shortage) and if you yourself are the mage make sure to have a lot of willpower or you will run out of mana really fast and use all of your lyrium potions.

I don't mean to be rude, but have you considered the fact that you're simply not good at the game yet?

I generally put two points in the main attribute for the role, ie, Magic for Mages, Strength for Warriors and Dexterity for Rogues. I then put the remaining point in their secondary ... Willpower for Mages, Dex and Constitution (one each other round) for Warriors and Cunning for Rogues.

Tottally agree with this guy lol.  I didn't get owned till the last dragon you run into and even then the Dragon only killed two of my guys before I put him down.  Your either building your guy TOTTALLY WRONG or you just kinda suck at the game.  If nothing else go back to Origins, work on building your character and the fights.

It can really help if you set each of your npc's to down a health potion if they hit less than 50% health. Then you just have to worry about keeping your potions stocked.

This is an honest question. Do you frequently just run head first into a group of mobs without any preperation or thought about how you are going to approach the encounter? I ask this because i tend to read about many players having difficulty because they play the game like it's diablo.

"If nothing else go back to Origins, work on building your character and the fights."
The OP said nothing about which game s/he is playing.
"Your [sic] either building your guy TOTTALLY [sic] WRONG or you just kinda suck at the game."
Not helpful -- do you have any real advice?  <_<

Tactics are your friends. Open up the tactics menu and look at how tactics are set for each character. Then, take some time to look over all the options for conditions (on the left) and reactions (on the right). As Ellythe said, the first condition for everyone should be Self: Health: <50% and the reaction should be Use health poultice least powerful.
If you have a healer, the second condition should be Ally: Health: <50% with the reaction Use spell or talent: Heal. Your first tactics slot won't usually be open, but you can set up your tactic in the bottom slot, then click and hold on the tactic number and move the tactic up to the top of the list. Why the top? The computer goes through the tactics list from top to bottom and then repeats.

Beyond tactics, be sure to do the basics and make sure everyone has the best armor and weapon you can manage for them. And, as Sylixe said, don't run headlong into combat. Try to position your party in such a way as to avoid being surrounded or use a choke point to control the number of enemies who can get to you at one time. Keep mages and archers at range as much as possible.

One last bit of advice, if you're playing on Normal difficulty, there's no shame in lowering the difficulty for particular battles. In fact, you may want to use Easy/Casual until you learn your way around the game a bit better. Dragon Age has a fairly steep learning curve, so be patient. You'll soon be kicking butt and taking names.
