If you're a 2h warrior, just dump everything into Str.
A mage wants a lot of magic and some willpower. I'm not sure how to figure that one out, I just always dumped most in magic with willpower about 10 under.
Cunning Rogues need, well, enough strength and dex for equips, and the rest in cunning.
Archer Rogues just need a whole lot of dex.
I only play on normal mode, so if someone wants to explain exactly where he should dump his stat points, feel free. Also, it helps to have a good understanding of the tactics system. That's the real difference between life and death.

High defense, armor and spell resistance will help you much more than a little more health.

To get rid of injuries, to go to camp, get the Cleansing Aura spell for Spirit Healers, or use injury kits in the inventory screen.

can anyone tell me how not to die? Every 5 seconds someone dies its rediculous and i am usually good at video games.
I don't mean to be rude, but have you considered the fact that you're simply not good at the game yet?

Tottally agree with this guy lol. I didn't get owned till the last dragon you run into and even then the Dragon only killed two of my guys before I put him down. Your either building your guy TOTTALLY WRONG or you just kinda suck at the game. If nothing else go back to Origins, work on building your character and the fights.

The OP said nothing about which game s/he is playing.

Not helpful -- do you have any real advice? <_<
Tactics are your friends. Open up the tactics menu and look at how tactics are set for each character. Then, take some time to look over all the options for conditions (on the left) and reactions (on the right). As Ellythe said, the first condition for everyone should be Self: Health: <50% and the reaction should be Use health poultice least powerful.
If you have a healer, the second condition should be Ally: Health: <50% with the reaction Use spell or talent: Heal. Your first tactics slot won't usually be open, but you can set up your tactic in the bottom slot, then click and hold on the tactic number and move the tactic up to the top of the list. Why the top? The computer goes through the tactics list from top to bottom and then repeats.
Beyond tactics, be sure to do the basics and make sure everyone has the best armor and weapon you can manage for them. And, as Sylixe said, don't run headlong into combat. Try to position your party in such a way as to avoid being surrounded or use a choke point to control the number of enemies who can get to you at one time. Keep mages and archers at range as much as possible.
One last bit of advice, if you're playing on Normal difficulty, there's no shame in lowering the difficulty for particular battles. In fact, you may want to use Easy/Casual until you learn your way around the game a bit better. Dragon Age has a fairly steep learning curve, so be patient. You'll soon be kicking butt and taking names.
