Dragon Age Awakening Redesigned (now available)

==> Here

My thoughts on Dragon Age: Awakening

At the moment, I am enjoying Dragon Age: Awakening a lot! It’s a great game and definitely worth the money.  In truth, a video game is an inexpensive source of entertainment. In the grand scheme of things, $40 for many days of entertainment is very much worth it.

As an example, when you hang out with your friends,  you can easily spend 40 bucks in one night. A movie for 2 is about 20 dollars. Gas is $40. So despite the reviews that you may read from others, this game is more Dragon Age!  And it is done very well. It is the best and the closest we've seen to Dragon Age.

During my time playing Dragon Age: Awakening, I went ahead and redesigned some characters. These are just designs I've done on a personal basis and I will be releasing them to the public very soon.

Dragon Age Awakening Redesigned

The designs were completed recently (March 17th) so they will improve with time.

This project is pretty much going to be the same as I've done for Dragon Age Redesigned and for Fallout 3 Project Beauty. Basically, I am going to do my best to redesign characters and make them fit the lore of the game as well.

Just like Dragon Age Redesigned, the final product will have three versions to choose from

1. Aesthetics (Proportions, anatomy, beauty)
2. Lore (Realism and lore)
3. Recommended (which will have the best balance of lore, realism, aesthetics and proportions)

Keenan, the dying warrior
Aesthetics, Recommended, and Lore

I made this change because I felt that Keenan looked a bit "clean" for a dying person. I wanted to give the impression that he was on death's door. Interestingly enough, the initial design didn't have a drop of blood on him and I found it affected my immersion of the game and my propensity to take him as a serious character. I also wanted him to look like a capable Warden. I removed the Alistair haircut as well.

Eddelbrek Version 2
Aesthetics, Lore and Recommended

Posted Image

Steafan VERSION 2 (spoiler alert)
Lore and Recommended only

Ok, I made some pretty drastic changes here.

There is a dialogue option when you are speaking with Steafan.

It says, "You're not a ghoul are you?"

This implies that Steafan was in such a decrepit state that he appeared that way. I gave him some slight skin discolorations and made some adjustments so that the dialogue option made more sense. I also changed the structure of his face and head to paint a dark and morbid picture of the situation at hand.

The Baroness

Aesthetics Only

Posted Image

Rylock the Templar VERSION 2

Lore, Recommended, and Aesthetics

I felt the eyes were a bit too large in appearance. I wanted to give her the appearance of someone very serious, cold and stern.

Posted Image
Posted Image

The Suspicious Character (Amaranthine)
Aesthetics, Lore and Recommended

I felt the original design looked a little bit too much like Alistair.

ORIGINAL DESIGN

REDESIGNED
Version 2 (Based off feedback from Stegab)

Posted Image

The first person you meet in Vigil's Keep

Aesthetics, Lore and Recommended

Why was the change made?

I wanted to capture the horror and terror of the events in Vigil Keep. I also made adjustments to the proportions.

Posted Image

Roland
Lore and Recommended only

Why was the change made?

When you meet Roland, he is on the verge of death and he has lost a considerable amount of blood. I felt the initial design looked a bit too clean. Roland also mentions that there is “something in his blood.” I made some changes accordingly. The new design matches his circumstance a bit better.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

The Looter who warns you of Velanna
Lore, Recommended and Aesthetics

Why was the change made?

1. There is a small glitch in the cinematic  where he has no eyebrows.
2. There is a small glitch in the cinematic where his eyes seem to gothrough the temple of his head.

I made a design which would address these issues and the cinematic sequences should be more convincing.

Posted Image

MOSLEY THE SNAKE
Aesthetics, Lore and Recommended

Why was the change made?

I wanted to make the thug leader seem calculating, intimidating and powerful.

Posted Image
Posted Image

The Shady Character
Lore and Recommended only

Considering the sequence of events that occur with the "Shady Character", I felt that the initial design didn't match his personality, demeanor and voice. I made some changes accordingly.

Posted Image

Bald guard you meet at the chantry near the epilogue
Aesthetics, Lore and Recommended

I don't know what his name is but he is a bald guard that  you see in the chantry near the epilogue. I made some changes to adjust the proportions of his face and head. I have placed this design in all three versions because it's pretty critical.

Posted Image

Captain Garevel
Aesthetics, Lore and Recommended

I made this change because I wanted to make a design that matched his stern and serious nature. I also changed the structure of the nose and mouth so that it is proportionate when you look at him from a profile view.

Posted Image

The Riot
Lore, Recommended and Aesthetics

(I made some changes to the proportions of the soldiers and peasants in the riot cinematic)

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

The Smuggler Leader
Aesthetics, Lore and Recommended

I wanted the Smuggler Leader to appear calculating, powerful, and intimidating.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Lord Guy

Aesthetics and Recommended only

I made this change because I felt the original design had a generic face.

Posted Image

Cell Guard
Lore, Recommended and Aesthetics

Posted Image

Random lady with white makeup
Aesthetics and Recommended only

Posted Image

Lore Version only

Posted Image

Second random lady with bad makeup
Aesthetics only

Posted Image

Lore Version and Recommended only

I made her skin the same color but I changed her hair to black. I decided to go against the original design because orange hair doesn't work on dark skin.

Posted Image

Lady Liza

Recommended, Lore and Aesthetics

Why was the change made?

I went back and changed Lady Liza's hair to a darker color. I also changed the proportions of her face. Due to the fact that she gets some camera time, I also wanted her to look more pleasant looking.

(Original design shown below)

Posted Image

Redesigned version

Posted Image

The Revered Mother
Aesthetics and Recommended only

Why was the change made?

I made a couple changes to the design to improve on the proportions and skin tone. She still keeps her cold demeanor.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Namaya the elf

Why was the change made?

I made the changes here because I have a different perception of elves. Generally, I've always been led to believe that elves should be beautiful, dignified and graceful as in literature by J.R.R. Tolkien. I do realize that this particular design may conflict with the lore of Dragon Age, but this was a change that I felt was necessary.

Aesthetics and Recommended

Posted Image

Noble with dark skin and orange hair
Aesthetics and Recommended only

Why was the change made?

I made this change because I felt the face was a bit too generic. I also changed his hair to a darker color as orange hair is distracting with dark skin.

Posted Image

Proportion Fix
Aesthetics, Recommended and Lore Version

Posted Image

Lady Esmerelle
Aesthetics and Recommended only

Why was the change made?

Ok, I get the impression that Lady Esmerelle is supposed to be a royal bit***.  So I made some changes to make her look the part but I adjusted the proportions and anatomy of the face.

Posted Image

Posted Image
Posted Image

Constable Aidan
Aesthetics only

The reason for the change:

The initial design for Aidan was actually well done. However, it was mentioned in the comments section that his skin did not match his hair. I made some changes accordingly. This will only be in Aesthetics.

Posted Image

Name not disclosed
Aesthetics and Recommended only

I made her skin more pale, changed the proportions and made her as if she was "turning."  I also gave her features of elves depicted by J.R.R Tolkien.

Posted Image

The Messenger
Aesthetics and Recommended only

Generally, orange hair does not mesh with dark skin. You would need to either make the hair a darker color, or you would need to change the skin to a lighter tone to make it go with the orange hair.

Posted Image

Lore Version only
Posted Image

The Private
Aesthetics and Recommended only

The reason for the change:

I tried to make a similar design to the one that Bioware made but I wanted to make the eyes more aligned with the face. The eyes seemed very large.

Posted Image

Ser Tamara
Aesthetics, Lore, and Recommended

It seemed apparent to me that Bioware intended for Tamra to be very beautiful. She's arguably one of the more attractive females within Dragon Age: Awakening. So I just went ahead and decided to build upon that. I also gave her a tougher appearance because she is a fighter. Last time I checked, anyone with the prefix, "Ser" was a capable fighter. The new design has adjusted proportions and correct placement and size of the eyes. It uses "Dracomies True Eyes" which is in Dragon Age Redesigned version 6.6.

Posted Image

Nobleman with Yosemite Sam beard
Aesthetics and Recommended only

Why was the change made?

I made this change because we did not invite Yosemite Sam to Dragon Age.

Posted Image

Kendrick
Aesthetics and Recommended and Lore version

Posted Image

Varel
Aesthetics, Lore and Recommended

Why was the change made?

I did this change because I felt that the new design fits his voice a whole lot better. The hoarse and rough voice of the voice actor seemed to match a different character appearance.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Bartender THIRD VERSION

Aesthetics, Recommended and Lore

Why was the change made?

If you play the game and talk to the Bartender, his beard is clipping with his lips. I chose a different beard so that there would be no clipping issue.

Posted Image

Eileen the hostage
Aesthetics and Recommended only

Why was the change made?

The changes here were primarily cosmetic. I wanted to make the damsel in distress an attractive woman.

Posted Image

Chanter
Aesthetics and Recommended only

Why was the change made?

I made some adjustments to the Chanter as her lips seemed to clip when she speaks to you after a completion of a quest.

Posted Image

Alec the sheepherder
Aesthetics, Recommended and Lore

Why was the change made?

I made this change after I discovered a couple things about him in the "end-sequence".

Posted Image

Sigrun Version 3

Posted Image

Sigrun (Aesthetics) (Default hair)
Posted Image

Sigrun
(Aesthetics)

Posted Image

Sigrun (Version One)

I predict I'll probably go through a lot more versions of Sigrun to get her personality down but this is my first version for now.

Posted Image
Posted Image

Valenna

I am deciding between these three versions.

Posted Image

Version 2

Posted Image

I am stumped.

Not sure which one to pick from here

I made a poll here so that you can choose which ones you want.

Which three versions of Velanna would you prefer?

Posted Image

Justice (Aesthetics)

Why was this change made?

Spoiler Alert:

I made this change because when you later come back to Amaranthine, Sorcha speaks to "him" as if nothing has happened. Also the wife of "him" does not recognize anything at first..but after she comes closer she realizes that something isn't quite right. In actuality, I am quite sure that if it was the "original design", Sorcha would not recognize "him" and the wife of "him" would have said something else entirely. I wanted to make a design that was more subtle..almost vampiric rather than skeleton-like.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image
Posted Image

Mhairi
VERSION ONE

Why was the change made?

Ok, I have no excuse for this one. The original was actually well designed and fits her personality very well as a strong willed warrior..I just wanted her to be more attractive.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Anders

Why was the change made?

I made this change because I felt the original design had an uncanny resemblance to Alistair.  I also wanted to give Anders a slight smirk because his default neutral face is that on the bottom left. Anders is sort of a jokester and I wanted to choose a design that reflected that.

Great work yet again OP.

Something that still amazes me: Why does Bioware put out such ugly/goofy looking characters? Why does it take a nonpaid community member to make the characters so much better?

I don't wanna hear "Alot of people think the Bioware models look good". They look goofy and terrible compared to the OPs work. It doesn't seem like it's that hard to do either (if you know what you're doing) as it took the OP 2-3 days after release to do this.

Great job OP.

Looks like you made all the female characters prettier and all the male characters uglier.

Eh, not bad, but not my cup of tea.

I like my old, ragged nobles to look old, ragged, and noble. Not young and spry.
