You aren't going to find a lot of people being angry about this... Half of this forum had already figured out that something was wrong once they announced a seventh party member. Then all the speculation about which NPC would die sorta ended up with Mhairi as the prime candidate.

If it wasn't gonna be Mhairi it would need to be someone else among the party NPCs.. Someone had to die, and of course that someone had to be the woman doing a man's job... Obviously.

Well gee, thanks for pointing that out.

Finally a female warrior, and she turns out to be another redshirt.

*beats forehead against a wall*

I'm still as much a fan as ever, but boy does this ever suck. WHY couldn't it be Oghren? WHY?! We have more investment in Oghren anyway! If you like him, you will hate it when he dies; if you hate him, you will LOVE it when he dies.

Because it's part of the story. The end.

I was surprised when she died and I hated that I didn't get to use her much, but whatever. She did the Joining (which few live through) and didn't make it. So what? Did you buy the game just for her? I doubt it.

My God. It's like there is no limit to the complaints. I think Bioware totally caught people off guard and that was awesome. They never said she was a companion through the entire expansion, just a companion.

If you want to boycott because of the bugs, fine. Understandable. But ONE companion? Really? Many of the companions in Origins could die by a choice you made, so why didn't you complain about that?

I'M TOTALLY BOYCOTTING BIOWARE NOW BECAUSE A VIRTUAL PERSON I BARELY HAD FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES DIED! I MUST END THIS TYRANNICAL RULE BECAUSE THEY TRICKED ME!

Ugh.

What can I say, I can be very dramatic.

I'm just angry now that they have her on the main website, posted as they would any other main character. *sigh* Oh well.

The reason is precisely the choice. You have absolutely no control over whether Mhairi lives or dies, it can't be helped....

So what? It's part of the story. It wouldn't be realistic if everyone survived the Joining. And obviously it would be ironic for the person who really wanted to be a Grey Warden to die. Same as Leliana getting pissed for you totally jacking with the Urn. Or Wynne dying due to the character being a Blood Mage. There has to be consistency to a story, and since most people don't survive the Joining, it would be totally unrealistic for every single person to survive.

Now if I had invested loads and loads into her, it would be different. But she died at the beginning so RIP Mhairi, you were a great warrior for the time I had you.

Dude, you are an idiot. It is a video game character. All we know about her is that she was on the King's Guard and was supposed to marry a trader. How you could get so emotionally attached is beyond me.

With Alistair, Zevran, Leliana, Morrigan, Wynne, Sten, etc... you have an entire game to know them, to fall in love with them or become friends. You see Mhairi for 30 minutes. And if you want a female tank, make one. And Sigrun is pretty kickbutt on her own.

I'm glad she died, her character sounded uninteresting and generic. And I'd rather have characters who had actual problems rather than a perfect do-gooder. That's what Wynne was for and I hated her (though I think that's what they were aiming for).

Not that I'm saying Awakening is perfect (or non-disappointing for that matter) on any level, but I think that was a right decision they made, to release her character stuff to make you think you were getting her and then killing her off.

Heck, if you want to be mad about something, be mad that none of your decisions matter, not this.

I'm just saying, her face should go along with the hall of momentary companions below here, right next to Daveth and Ser Jory. Instead she was paraded as one would Allistair or Wynne. Yes you can kill them but you have a choice.

I kind of wished more people would have died. Like Sigrun, even though she is awesome. Maybe they could have made a few more characters to die at the Joining.

Oh, please. Stop being sexist. Two MALES died attempting the Joining in DA:O, and if the PC was female she survived. Get over it.

Sorry, but what you are asking for makes no sense. I just don't understand it. Your not going to get a DLC for a character that had no place in history or made any impact.

Sorry to call you an idiot but this is ridiculous.

They never said she would survive the joining, hell they never even said she would even be a companion, its called the characters page, not the new companions for Awakeing page.

I know Bioware Employees sometimes frequent these forums, I say let them see this thread burn or else I'll send them a message with the best qoutes and pledges not to buy this to their main website. I wan them to know that their are limits to what they can get away with!

You do realize that any complaints you send are probably going to get drowned out by all the complaints that were sent in after ME2's release right?
Seriously I'm all for people expressing their displeasure over this and all, but the way you're going about it is a tad overly excessive.

I guess your right, no point getting an ulcer over it. I wont buy DAO 2 and I certaintly hope that people will post such statements should they wish too on here - but thats it.

Wow. You realize they did this on purpose, right? They WANTED you to think Mhairi was going to live. They WANTED you to get upset about her dying. Death all around you is part of being a Warden. Not knowing who is going to survive the joining is part of it.

The joining in Awakening, despite being made humorous with Oghren when it shouldn't have, was better than the joining in Origins. This time we didn't know who the "red shirt" was.

They wrote a story, and a character died, and you had an emotional reaction. Mission accomplished. How on earth could you let that be the deciding factor as to whether or not you get future Dragon Age games?

This...except for the Oghren part (I thought it was funny).  When it came to the Joining, I saw three people (much like my Joining) and I was in the place of Duncan.  As soon as the scene started, I remembered my Joining and immediately started to wonder who was gonna make it through.  Before Oghren drank the first drop, I knew that for it to be effective someone was going to have to die otherwise it would be lame.  It's sad that Mhairi died because she really could have been an interesting character (she reminded me of Ash from ME in her zealousness), however, it happened.  I do hope that we have some kind of Warrior Queen ala Stolen throne in DA2.

good point kimarous, very good point lol

My poor confused orlesian warden mourns Mhairi in her own stoic way, meanwhile I mourn the (mostly) smooth flawless plot, roleplayability, fun and immersion, interpersonal relationships, romances, logic, emotional responses, plot, value for money, myriad of choices, multiple endings, plot clifhangers, twists, dog, zevran, plot.......

Did i mention i miss the plot... It had a good one...

...Of Origins.

*depressed sigh*

I wonder if people would be this up in arms about Bioware's decision to troll it's fan base if Mhairi had been a male character instead. Not saying that there aren't people out there who genuinely liked her character and all, but they seem to be out numbered by all the people complaining about losing their potential female tank.

Also $2,500 is kind of a drop in the bucket compared to the costs that were needed to create both the original game and expansion, so you might want to aim a bit higher with your final quota.

Still I do sincerely wish you luck in your endeavors - though I sincerely doubt anything will be done about it.

Its not just about losing her character, its that Bioware went back on their word when they promised her as a main character then threw her out right when we got in. We were promised six characters, and we as customers have the right to object.

We were promised Five new characters and one returning character. Never did they say we would have six new characters. As much as I liked Mhiri, I find her death gives the Joining purpose. If they deaths were random, then it would not have the same effect... plus she a ****** and full of herself, just look and what she said when you chose Oghren and get  Anders to join you. I do think she would hate every party member in someway... yet I sorta wished she lived, but she died and that is that.

Mhairi I will miss indefinately. She had untold potential. However Bioware had the right.

They did it so they WOULD get this reaction from you. It worked. Got me the first time I heard it.

Besides...the list says companions. Not permanant companions.

Meh, when they announced 5 new, and 1 old, I knew that the sudden 6 new and 1 old meant death for at least one initiate. I also figured it would be the last one announced, but not Howe, who had a comic dedicated to him.

I *hoped* it would not be the rare female tank, but alas, it was.

Watching a play-through, the joining was awful - it was flat and bland. There was no emotional impact, because Mhairi was not someone the PC cared about all that much yet. The interaction between the seneshal and the dead warrior was almost laughable, "I'm sorry Mhairi", *sorrowful face*

One fraction of a second later, it felt like "alright, someone remove the litter on the floor. Upward and onward. Mhairi? Mhairi who?"

*Yearns for the return of Aribeth de Tylmerande*

Yeah, I know she was not a fighter but a paladin, but she kicked serious butt. Go Aribeth.
