I've beaten Mass Effect 2 for the 3rd time, and yet I'm still trying to figure out who's best for which missions. So far, I've nailed down using Mordin and Zaeed for Blood Pack missions[/b][/b] (Incinerate armor), Tali and Garrus when dealing with Blue Suns and Geth (because of Mechs and Shields), and Maranda and Thane when dealing with Collectors (Biotic Barriers), and Tali and Maranda for Eclipse mercs (Shields and Biotic Barriers). As you can see, I've yet to find a place for Jack, Grunt, Legion, and Samara. Any ideas?
Also, what's everyone's ideas on who's right for what?

Grunt's pretty decent at distracting and taking down Husks during the IFF mission. I personally find Samara useful for most situations, especially when fighting organics with armor/barriers. Legion is a complete badass, an excellent sniper, and quite durable but I'm having a hard time pegging him for any specific situations. Jack, on the other hand, is useless to me.

I would take Miranda over Zaeed for blood pack missions warp is effective against armor and prevents regeneration of krogan/vorcha and can create biotic combos with the adept also Overload 1 shots unarmored pyros. In general group members depend upon what class you choose. If you choose an adept you might consider jacob or grunt for blood pack missions since incendiary ammo is rather effective. There are many "right" choices that will make the missions easier and there are some clear "wrong" choices that will add difficulty to the missions due to the abilities given up. Over all
Collector- Thane//Samara//Miranda//Mordin(for horizon)
Blue Suns- Miranda//Garrus//Samara(Reave is too good)//Mordin(incinerate is still good for unshielded)
Blood pack- Samara//Thane//Miranda//Mordin
Eclipse- Samara//Miranda//Thane//Possibly Mordin but hes the weakest of my picks for these missions useful before samara is gotten
Geth- Garrus//Miranda//Zaeed(for squad disruptor but I believe that double overload is better the squad disruptor for most classes)
These are my preferences I pick usually Squad mates with powerful abilities that allow me to decimate enemy defenses quickly and effciently. My top picks overall missions
1.) Miranda
2.) Samara
3.) Mordin
4.) Thane
5.) Grunt (solid tank useful on classes like engineer or adept where you need fire taken off you ammo ability is also good early on)
6.) Garrus (use with Miranda on Geth missions absolute domination with double overload)
7.) Zaeed (really only useful for disruptor ammo on geth missions)
Grunt is so low on my list because I like to play in your face classes like Assault Sentinel and vanguard so I am really taking the role of Grunt and I need team mates with strong defense stripping abilities.
The rest of the team mates I could do without I mean yes legion and tali are somewhat decent I just find drone on too long of a cool down and ai hack to be less useful than an overload
This is just my opinion and using these choices I never have trouble on any mission and my first play through on insanity was a vanguard and it was a breeze. This game is meant to be fun so you can use any squad mate on any mission just for a typical min/max person such as myself, I recommend what is posted above.

Difficulty plays a large role for me as well.
I personally love Legion, and have made it a point to recruit him ASAP.

A lot of what makes someone useful is what skills you've given them. For example if you don't have any AMMO skills that effect your targets then adding in a Grunt or Zaaed or whoever has useful skills isn't bad.
My mission types:
-- vs. Geth: Someone should provide disruptor ammo if possible. The other teammate should likely be Legion or Tali depending on their skill layout. AI Hacking, Drones, Energy Drain, etc. are all welcome. If neither of those are available Garrus wouldn't be bad or even Miranda.
-- vs. Mechs: Area armor effect skills are handy. Zaeed, Samara, or Morden may be fine. Garrus with Squad AP ammo may be nice here.
-- vs. Collectors: Legion & Tali for drones to distract Harbinger. You can then likely pick off Collectors at your leisure. If they aren't available [Horizon?] then anyone with good weapons like Zaaed or Garrus would be fine ... if they have points in Concussive Blast then even better.
-- vs. Husks: Samara && Zaeed are good. Grunt isn't bad with his Tanky nature and him loving to charge.
-- More info later ... sorry gotta go.

depends on the mission
fighting husks- jack, samara, or thane
geth or mechs- legion, tali, garrus
mercs- grunt, mordin, zaeed
collectors- anyone with biotics or a combat drone
basicly squadmembers are there to fill the gaps your character can't; so a squad would consist of a biotic, tech, and combat specialist would provide an answer to any fight

Id say the following formula works pretty well:
Miranda: Almost every mission
Samara: Almost every mission
Garrus: Use against geth or blue suns
Those 3 characters will get you through the game with nearly the best team setup every time.

It depends on your own class. If you have warp, you don't need two squaddies with warp as it's better to have someone with pull to do warp combos, or cryo blast or something similar to neutralize enemies who lost their barrier/armor. If you have overload, you don't need two squaddies with overload, since again it's better to have the third member neutralize opponents with no protection.

I play an Adept on Insanity and I got it all covered with Miranda and Garrus:
2x Overload for shields.
2x Warp + Concussion for Barriers.
2x Warp + Squad Tungsten Ammo for Armor.
I also like Grunt or Samara. Grunt can provide for squad incendiary ammo and almost never dies, but you´ll miss one overload then. Samara can use a geth pulse rifle which makes a bit up for not having Overload. In general even blood pack missions are easier with Overload as long as you have Warp/Reave and Incendiary/Tunsten Ammo.
