ME 1 and ME 2 linear story with side quests

Face it, decisions in ether game only result in minor changes within each mini mission, order you complete them or in your over all resources (points, team members). 

I wonder why there is no branching in ether game.. IE you the out come of a main story mission means that your next mission is different, so that  there can be something new in each play through, as it stands you can basically complete every mission, just with some different dialog.

I would really like to see maybe two paths to completing the game, hell even more missions that let you choose to go left instead of right (Novaria in ME1) avoiding enemies and coming in the back door.? Maybe something even bigger like in depending on Mission A you get mission A1 or A2 as your next mission.

What if you could only have x team members in a play through? What if access to team members branched?

I guess it comes down to content... If they created branches in the existing content, people might think the game is too short, if they created more, there would be a lot of unseen content for those that don't play more than once.

Because they don't have enough resources or time to put such a mechanic into the game.
