The differences between Hale's and Meer's delivery is completely in the ear of the beholder, and it really isn't relevant to the main point of this thread.

I like Hale's voice, but I haven't been able to play a male Shepard for more than 5 minutes before having to stop because he's just too big and clunky for my tastes - so really his voice isn't a factor for me at all because I've not heard it all that much (what I have heard hasn't filled me with joy either, but as I said that's really a subjective opinion). There is also a little bit of what Halmiriliath mentioned above at play too - I find it easier to relate to female character's because I'm female, I only ever play male characters when I have no other choice.

I honestly think that Bioware would net more customers/players if they would emphasise the customization of the game in their trailers. Perhaps a "Who is Commander Shepard?" trailer, depicting a variety of Shepards doing a variety of things, or something like that. I'm sure a lot of people will say "well the horse has bolted now, not much point in closing the barn doors"... I say to them, "Well catch that darned horse and put it back in it's box, THEN close the door!"

And if it is really too late to change the ME franchise now, then Bioware should take note of this for their next main game - and certainly for their upcoming MMO, since MMOs are, if anything, even more customizable than a single player game like Mass Effect.

You realize that Canon Shepard is male? That the Shepard on the box is male?

Of course you have the opposite problem playing with femshep that interactions with the men on the crew become sexualised - the way she tramps herself out to Jacob when all I wanted was to be friendly was seriously disconcerting.

Agreed about the Jacob interactions, but I never had that problem with the other male LIs. Thane is perfectly sociable without having to do his romance; Hale does good at portraying a Shepard who simply wants to help heal Thane emotionally and to be his friend (though I still have no idea what "siha" means). Garrus is Garrus...and it was good to be able to help him get past his obsession.

That is a fair point. I suppose what I was thinking of is the fact that, with both of them, if femshep chooses any dialogue option other than 'I want to jump into bed with you at the nearest convenient opportunity' they suddenly aren't interested in talking anymore... <_<

Eh, that happens to dudeShep too. None of the squadmates have much dialogue if you tell 'em you're not interested.

Yes, and he looks like a douche from a Eurotrash dance mix video.

Ah, yes. "Canon".
Actually, the Shepard used for promotional purposes isn't canon. Just a default face to make the trademark recognizeable. (although one could argue that the franchise is distinctive enough without Sheploo everywhere)

Ah, yes, "canon". The illusion that there is a set gender and appearance to Our Hero. We have dismissed these claims.

Actually there's two default Shepards - John and Jane. They're both default. You can pick either one. (The menu comes up with Male Shepard, Female Shepard, and Custom Shepard, not just Male and Custom, which would be the case if Sheploo was "the default".)

Sheploo is on the box of Mass Effect 2, but that does not make him canon. Bioware have pretty much said there isn't a canon Shepard. This is why they've gone to such lengths to conceal Shepard's gender in the books and the comics. They don't want to put down any one Shepard as canon, because that invalidates the game of many many MANY players.

If Shepard were an Asari, none of these issues would exist!

LOL. :D

There is a problem with that though, Asari are female not neuter or asexual. (People have been arguing about whether or not Asari are female, despite the entry in the codex that says they are, so I'll just add this: To a human an Asari is percieved to be female.)

Oh, I know, but he was referring to the guy specifically on the box.  And that guy is the Default male.

Until we get more serious girl gamers, game companies are obviously going to target male gamers first for something like this.  But then that's a vicious cycle since girls aren't targeted, they won't think it's something for them and won't get into gaming.   Luckily, they are taking the girl gamers they do have more seriously, otherwise we wouldn't have a female Shepard at all.
Solution - convert more girls into gamers :bandit:

seems like an appropriate place to go a little off topic.

my wife is interested in playing the game pretty much just for the story. besides playing a sentinel on casual difficulty, is there anything else i can do to help her not die and get frustrated? the only comparable game she's ever played was Fable 2 (she likes puzzle games and Sims).

I enjoy playing with Femshep much more than Maleshep. In general I like strong women.

As can be seen from my Avatar I play females in Dragon Age as well. Same reason. Strong women are much more fascinating to me than any male. Guess I play differently than many others then. I do not project myself into my character, and as such the character is not who I want to be. Much rather, it is a projection of people that I'd like to be with. Thus I give my characters traits that I find interesting. Which is strength, resolve, truth and humanity.

To me, the story revolves around a female Shepard. Incidentally there's two Shepard in my case; one who's honourable, and one who's cruel.

I consider both to be canon. The story doesn't need gender. We chose for ourselves what we want.

Concerning gender equality; absolutely. My opinion is simple, yet have huge implications. All humans are equal, and all deserve to love and be loved. Simple. Now apply that opinion to every aspect of society, and you have me. All dogmas, beliefs and philosophies that says otherwise must be fought.

Well, I know from some experience that actually being with said noob (lol) helps the 'transition' process.  If you're with your wife while she plays, she's probably going to be more likely to continue playing and trying because you'll be there if she needs help and she gets to share the story and her personal character with you.  Being excited with her wouldn't hurt either (but it's Mass Effect; how hard could that be really lol).  I wouldn't interfere a whole lot though; I hate when people do that and unfortunately, gamers tend to do that a lot lol (simply because I think the vast majority of us would rather be playing than watching, especially a noob).  So yup...pretty much sit back and watch her play and don't give advice unless she asks for it, even if she dies a lot.  Of course, this also depends on the type of person your wife is, but I find that this process can actually work to her benefit:  when she finally does accomplish something, it'll be a great feeling for her and that may push her to continue.  Being supportive is probably the best thing you could do really.  I don't know whether you play ME2 on the 360 or PC.

And I was just thinking...Sentinel may be easier, but would she find it fun?  Her being engaged in gameplay seems pretty important.  Something both fun and potentially easy for her could be the Soldier class.  She can stay back in cover,  snipe, and slow things down--fun, easy.  As a more 'mainstream' type of female gamer, she may also enjoy precision over a lot of explosions and fire power (shoot-em-up type of gameplay).

As a side note, something I thought was well-done and interesting (and something you and your wife may find interesting as well):

Video Games and the Female Audience.

pc.
sentinel for survivability and she's terrible at aiming in real time.  she'll always have a power to use, nicely hotkeyed, and she can target while left-shifted.  if there were a way to automate combat completely, that'd be ideal.  then again, she got the hang of Fable2, but real time action is not what she's after... video game wise.
