Though I used the default John Shepard at creation in ME, I did try the female Shepard in a second playthrough (mainly for romance). The voice acting is a bit off for me (personal preference prolly) but she makes a strong female role.

I remember that when I sat down with KOTOR for the first time I was blown away - I was so used to JRPGs that the option to play as a woman and not a spiky haired teenage annoyance filled me with genuine glee.

im now playing as Fem and picking mix of renegade, paragon and ambivalent responses and basically its more fun to hear & see what happens.
I had originally went all paragon with my Male and while it was ok being all worthy & noble, ( cos thats kinda person i am) i also just wanted to have the best chance to exploit romance options.
Now with my Fem im not too interested in scoring with the guys as i need to give myself all chance of getting Ms Chambers to do her little party piece for me at the end.
yeh shallow i know !

Hehe, tempting, but then the "other side" would start a group, and it'd just snowball from there...
There's enough fighting on that front in real life...

I personally think the story works better with the female protagonist too, but that's probably just me...

I agree fully OP. I cannot play the game as a maleshep. The voiceactor sounds like such a douchebag I just cannot take him seriously. I did make it through an insanity run as cannon maleshep renegade and it was no where near as compelling. Plus all the female interactions when you are maleshep are so sexualized. Its nice playing as a femshep and not having to deal with that stuff.

No, I don't think you're alone in thinking the narrative actually works better with a woman protagonist.
I don't have anything against Meer and he is much better in ME2 - for the most part he manages to keep his voice neutral without sounding bored, a trap he fell into too often in ME1 - but Hale's confidence at switching tone on a dime gives her a massive edge.
Of course you have the opposite problem playing with femshep that interactions with the men on the crew become sexualised - the way she tramps herself out to Jacob when all I wanted was to be friendly was seriously disconcerting.

Agreed about the Jacob interactions, but I never had that problem with the other male LIs. Thane is perfectly sociable without having to do his romance; Hale does good at portraying a Shepard who simply wants to help heal Thane emotionally and to be his friend (though I still have no idea what "siha" means). Garrus is Garrus...and it was good to be able to help him get past his obsession.

I have never done any other romance but Liara, but the male LIs as characters aren't too bad.
Jacob does annoy the hell out of me no matter what though, and I do hate how Shepard appears to want to have sex with him right on the counter...
I don't do any of the m/f romances in games anyway I either don't do them, I always do f/f when the option is there (Kudos to BioWare), but from what I have seen on YouTube and how I talked to the characters, all of the male LIs want sex 24/7.

I like to have fun but I ain't easy. So don't bother creating a 'Jason' interaction for ME3.
I like to have fun but I got standards. So it was refreshing to remain celebate while surrounded by potential bedmates. Garrus? Meh, cool dude but I ain't into combat sex. Kelly? Nice kid. Thane? Nice guy but has issues... and scales. So I'll wait for Liara to get her stuff done. She IS my perfect match.
Did 1 Shepdude for ME1 and 1 for ME2 and had no joy at all. Ended up racing thru the games. It felt as if Selene loves the life she's living - caring for people and saving the galaxy and all, but my Shepdudes both gave me the feeling they were @work. Big difference man. Selene is tough, strong, compassionate, damn stubborn, and still remains completely feminine, whereas Shepdudes' softer sides have a major conflict with their testosterone.

I was quite annoyed by the way FemShep interacted with Jacob aboard the Normandy. My Shep is not straight or bi, and even if she was she has a little more class than that. That was pretty much the only time in ME2 I was disappointed by the portrayal of FemShep.

maleShep gives the same line w/out the inflection on talking. It's interesting how that one little inflection changes the whole meaning of the line. Okay, the line still seems like a come on, no matter how you slice it, but I doubt Jacob was ever considered for a m/m romance.

Apparently the script for the original Alien was written gender neutral; Ripley didn't become Ellen Ripley until Sigourney Weaver was cast for the role. I can't imagine the character as a man after all these years, but objectively I don't see why it couldn't have worked. So food for thought...maybe, sorta.

That is an intriguing possibility, and one that, though it seems obvious now, didn't really occur to me. It's kind of unfortunate...the same thing happened to me when playing Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, except the difference in the male actor's voice vs. Hale's female Jaden Korr wasn't that big; they both did fairly well in that game.

Which is why you use the Desann voice pack.
Tempting, but no thanks. <_<
Now, if it were possible to modify the character voices in the ME games, I'd consider making a re-voice mod for ManShep.
