You know, I think I've pretty much said my piece earlier in the thread, but I'll reitterate it here for those who have joined in late.

Mass Effect is bigger than John Shepard. Not only can you chose your own first name, your background and history, and how your face looks - you can also chose your gender. To limit the trailers to one character out of however many permutations of Shepard exist, is to sell the game short.

This isn't a gender thing really, though that is certainly part of it (the ME2 trailer being "this band of brothers" etc), this is about diversity. I love this game to bits, but I feel this has to be said. Bioware has, sadly, come up short. Not only did they exclude Jane Shepard (and customized Shepards), they minimalized the role of female squad members in the major trailers, and they cut out a true f/f romance (not to mention the rumored cuts to m/m romantic content as well). This is a bad sign, Bioware used to be leaders in this department - heck, the Dragon Age team showed us that they still could be - but sadly, they're now trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator, and everyone else is getting short changed as a result.

I was quite annoyed by the way FemShep interacted with Jacob aboard the Normandy. My Shep is not straight or bi, and even if she was she has a little more class than that. That was pretty much the only time in ME2 I was disappointed by the portrayal of FemShep.

Yeah, I mean, I don't have any problems with those who play straight characters or bi characters, but when my Shep is a lesbian, I highly doubt she would want to have any sort of relationship with Jacob.
I guess it was probably BioWare telling Hale to say the line in a flirty voice, even so, it is still extremely annoying to hear.
Whenever I talk to Jacob and hear Shep say that line, I always think, "Okay... why are you interested in men? You're just going to ignore the fact that you are a lesbian and you love Liara then?"

I always play as Paragon, but I am going to have to make an exception for Jacob after hearing that.

I just watched the ME2 collector DVD w/ the "Making of" video. W/ very few exceptions it was more of a "ME2 is going to be a great game promo video." That said, femShep was represented fairly well in the video, all things considered. I'd say it was a 65/35 split Sheploo to JaneShep. Also, Jennifer Hale was in the video more than Mark Meer, which unfortunately isn't saying much as Meer's spot was one of the "blink and you miss it" spots. Hale comments on the "I have to go" line which is funny.

Yeah, Meer sounded really weird in the beginning of the game. Now I'm a bit further, on my way to get the IFF to be precisely, and I think he sounds pretty decent actually. I'm still more of a femshep guy, though. At first I chose to play as a female because, hey, if I must look at someone for over thirty hours, it better be someone who looks nice. But now I think Jennifer Hale actually plays the role better. The only disadvantage is that you can only romance with the guys. Luckily there's still Liara from ME1...

I can't play MaleShep properly. For some reason, no matter what face I design, he comes over all creepy. :S

Jeniffer Hale always seems to deliver the lines exactly as I want her to. Mark Meer is fine, but never feels quite right to me. FemShep is just a bit more playful in the delivery, and kicks so much ass when it's time for serious business! But it's all personal preference. :)

I'm afraid you're gonna have to wait until I finish beating this guy to death with his own spine.

*ahem*
Anyway.
I'm female, et cetera, et cetera.
Ordinarily, I'm fairly split in terms of gender when it comes to RPGs. However, the more I played ME1, the more attached I became to a female Shepard. Chalk it up to a love of strong female protagonists, or perhaps just playing the same character repeatedly (must... reach... level... 60...), but in a lot of ways I think Jennifer Hale is a much more compelling main character.

Of course it could also be due to Meer!Shep being just another in a long, long line of male action heroes IN SPAAAAACE, whereas females of that persuasion are still comparatively rare.

TL;DR version: I don't dislike Male Shep. However, I do empathize less with him than I do with Female Shep. To each their own, and all that. *shrug*

Figured I'd join the party, since I've exclusively played as a Femshep since ME1 (another forward-thinking 30-something guy here)!

When ME1 first came out I had no idea how ridiculously addicted I'd become to playing it. It was a rental and because I'm not an RPG player at heart (turn-based RPGs anyway, I still feel stupid playing your average JRPG), I wasn't expecting it to hold my interest very long. After three days of playtime, the rental returned, I rushed to my local Gamestop to pick up a copy and hungrily finished what I had only just begun.

But the odd thing I noticed was how much more endearing the game is (to me, at least) with a female protagonist. I had started off the bat with a Femshep, since male protagonists in games are a dime a dozen, and also because at the time Maleshep seemed too bland and average in a sea of Bald Space Marines.

Without saying it too lightly, I doubt my interest in the Mass Effect universe would be half as gigantic today without Femshep. That's not to say I wouldn't start a new game with Maleshep one day, but my Femshep, and the story I crafted around her, was what made me go out and purchase that game.

Well, it's not like I was playing the IFF mission and suddenly pointed my finger at the screen while yelling: "OMG, Mark Meer finally sounds normal to me!" It was a process really. I just wanted to say that his voice raised my eyebrows a few times in the beginning of the game and that I hardly notice his accent anymore by now.

Of course I love this thread! It is practically canon for all my games to have Female Shepard. Except for one. Anyway . . .

Female Shepard Launch Trailer!

That's pretty awesome.  Posted Image

Anyway, I'm just happy we even have the option of playing a female Shepard.  So many games don't even give that option, even in games that are relatively shallow and gender choice would be nothing more than cosmetic.  So yeah, I'm really happy that in this wonderful, in-depth game we get an awesome, strong female to play, which is something that is sorely lacking in the game industry (and yes, I am a female, in case anyone is wondering Posted Image).  While I would love for canon Shepard to be female, my guess is that it's not going to happen due to gamers still being predominantly male.  But major points to BioWare, for giving us such an awesome female character to play and to Jennifer Hale, for doing a terrific job with the voice.  I keep telling myself to play a male character, to see what the game is like from that perspective, but I just can't.  Men having been saving the world/universe for long enough.  Time for us girls to have a go.  Posted Image

I used my wife's character on two playthroughs (vanguard/adept) on insanity runs, I must admit that the voice-acting for FemSheps really shines on certain scenes. Especially the Tali trail...

I was also annoyed by what they did with the FemShep/Jacob conversations.   Most of My Fem Shepards are straight, but they aren't predators or pushy and that lead in line she gives every time she talks to him, drives me nuts.

I have tried both Male and Female Shepards, and I must say that I am on the FemShep boat, and not because (though it may be hard to believe) because I'm female.

It just seems more...right. I have looked at other universes where male leads seem for fitting, but for Mass Effect, a female lead makes more sense to me.

I cut the quotes, cuz.. let's face it, those pictures add nothing to do the thread, and maybe if we're lucky those posters will get banned.

My personal opinion is that Mark Meer sounds fantastic delivering the Renegade Bruce Willis one-liners. But that's -all- he does well. Jennifer Hale doesn't pull off the badass quite as well, (Courtenay Taylor's Jack is better, IMO) but she does -everything- excellently, including the 'normal' dialogue lines. Jennifer Hale sounds like she's having a conversation. Mark Meer just sounds like he's waiting for another chance to be RenShep.

Oh, and Miranda Lambert = win.

I'm playing my male Shepard  this week and I agree that there are definitely some lines that Mike Meer does that I like.  I was very impressed with Courtenay Taylor.  I didn't know she had done the voice for Juhani in KOTOR.
I am happy with both Shepard's voice acting on the whole.
One of my favorite fem Shepard lines is talking to the scout on Tuchanka.  There is just something about it that I enjoy.

Miranda Lambert - I really only know two of her songs, but this one always made me sign along and it just felt right, though I usually succeed in ignoring stuff.  I'm mostly a Brad Paisley, Eric Clapton, Barenaked Ladies and lots of things in between.

That's a very interesting point, and one that could crucially decide whether people feel Meer or Hale's voice is more appropriate, as you already have established preconceptions of your character when you go to roll a Shepard of the opposite sex.

Personally, I always go for male protagonists, but that's largely due to my mindset. I like to feel that I can instill as much of myself into my character as possible, and - as a male - I struggle doing so when the protagonist is female. Sure, I can relate to them, but I don't feel as if I am them. I think it might also be the romance aspect and not seeing the attraction of love interests for females, although I'd probably be willing to make an exception for the sheer awesomeness of Garrus and Thane!

Nevertheless, this thread - and the aforementioned trailer on YouTube - has convinced me to make a female Shepard the next time I wind up making a new character, so it should be interesting to see if I enjoy the story as much as I do with a male Shepard.
