Yeah, going to the Keep just means abandoning a city that's a Blighted mess anyways, and you get people studying your tactics for decades afterward. Seeing as I was the Hero of Ferelden nobody really questioned the decision either, except for survivors of the city itself but eh, they're biased.

They're not just mad that you abandoned them. They're also upset that you burned the city down which most likely also caused deaths. You didn't just not help: you actively made their situation worse as the fire was either not effective against the darkspawn or also effective against the humans trapped in the town and under attack. And everything was now on fire.

Alistair would save the city. Duncan would have burned it down.
I finally burned it today to get my last achievement, and I gotta say the cutscene where there were clearly un-infected civillians cowering surrounded by flames was pretty harsh.
