I bought DA:O when it first came out, and played through the entire game with no issues, i recently upgraded to windows 7, and updated some of my drivers.  As of now, when i play the game runs fine for the first 5-10 minutes, but after that my framerate drops to around 5 (using fraps to monitor) and eventually the game powers off my computer entirely. This is not happening in any game other than DA:O

My system specs are as follows

CPU: Intel Core i7 950 @ 3.07GHz, 3066 MHz (instruction set x86, x86-64, MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3)
Memory: 6GB DDR2 @ 1333 MHz
Video: 1GB Nvidia Geforce GTX 280M (Driver Version: 195.62)
Sound: Realtek Hi-def audio

What's that in computer related (Celcius) degrees? And is it CPU, GPU, Hdd, or MB sensors?

i thought that it may be an overheating issue due to the total system shutdown, but after monitoring temperatures i am not so sure

Same thing happens to me. I have a quad-core Alienware Area 51. Playing on Win 7. I have to tell you that it also happens to me in Sacred 2 sporadically. I think something in Patch 1.03 messed up the graphics handling. Very frustrating. I also p[laying 1.02 through the entire game with no problems.

Temperatures?

Temperatures have nothing to do with this issue what so ever. Read up on the froms a bit more and you will soon find many who have this issue. I have a fan controller with a LCD screen on my case showing the temps of 5 key locations inside my case getting readings from the CPU, PSU, HD, etc. Temps are below 30c. I'm not sure if this is HIS issue but it seems for the majority of people it is easily narrowed down to one root cause of the problems patch 1.3.

Anyway the issue is with patch 1.3 it causes so far as I can see most people to crash as the thread starter mentioned after a matter of minutes. I have yet to see a single response from Bioware on this issue.

This sounds the same as my issue and it feeeels like a temperture crash as well... I have never had my computer act as if it was overheating during a crash... very odd behavior. Hopefully we will get a patch soon...

I agree it has the symptoms of heat issues but many folk are experiencing this within minutes of cold pc / game start up.
So many pc's have temp monitoring now showing very normal conditions during these crashes.
And only occuring with DA

I have the same problem with Windows XP. I played through entire game with 1.02 patch without any problems. It seems that the problem is in anti-aliasing module of 1.03 patch - when I set it to 8 then sometimes I see colored rectangles instead of objects. When I set it to 4 I experience just crashes after 1-2 hours of playing.

Exactly...  I am not saying it is a heat issue...  Just saying it is odd how it mimics one.  If multiple people are having this same thing, hopefully soon Bioware will find a solution.

I sadly have given up playing the game until a fix is found.  :(

Trouble is, I had the coloured rectangles before 1.03 patch (which I still have yet to install).
So it is not necessarily only 1.03 patch related.
As I said in other posts, after trying all the good advice on these forums,  I overcame my problem by switching off full screen and playing in windowed mode.

I haven't upgraded to the 1.03 patch yet, but it's possible that the latest patch may have changed the graphics engine which could be triggering a bug in the graphics device driver. It's highly unlikely a program could crash Windows these days, and even less likely it would crash it so hard your computer powers itself down -- it's almost always a hardware failure or device driver fault that does it. Did you go to Nvidia's website and check to see if you have the latest driver from them?

The 1.03 patch for some reason was causing my computer to freeze up - usually during a cut scene, conversation...the screen would go black, and I would have to reboot. For Awakenings, I disabled all the mods that have scene changes (Improved Atmostphere, Innodil's Pocket Plane, AIS Emporium) I also uninstalled DAO, and reinstalled a "clean" copy...(Save the Characters folder) I then patched 1.03 from the "Awakening" DVD, then installed Awakening. I added the mods that just changed appearance, and have had NO problems since then.

I'm not sure if 1.03 on its own is bugged (without Awakenings) or if there was a problem with the file from the website. I had no problems with a clean install, and the patch from the DvD -

*note* getting rid of the mods like AIS, and Innodil (that give you a new area) also cured the problem I had with an unresponsive Oghren and the merchant outside the Keep gates.

I tried what you suggested and it didnt work, but my hopes were high though as the game lasted a good 45 minutes instead of 10 before it died. I tried it again and it crashed again in less time. I so much wish it would have worked. Getting frustrated at looking at my Awakening cd, I didnt buy it to decorate my desk. God we need a patch to fix this.

Ahh sorry to hear that, your computer has similar specs - did you try updating your video/audio drivers?

1.03 is the likely suspect. Try a clean install, but only patch to 1.02a. If you still have the crashing, it's possibly a hardware issue. Are you having problems in other games?

My Drivers are all up to speed. There is absolutely nothing else I can do, and I have no mods, maybe some mods helped your case, or maybe your more recent window did, I dont know, but it sadden me to have bought a game I cant even play

I have been reading on the forums a lot about this issue. What I have noticed is that many of us are using dual core processors or faster.

Someone suggested on the gamefaqs forum that you turn off all the core processing cept one, so it isn't overstressing your PC, which seems to be the problem with many of us.

Other options have been to disable threaded optimization in nvidia, which have works for some other people.

Myself I suspect my graphics card is going out, which I wouldnt know until later if the game hadnt stressed it to hard with this new patch. It clearly showed symptoms of the VRAM going bad.

Thank you, you nailed it. That is what I experience. I will boot my PC turn on DA:O watch my temps carefully and they have never gone above 30-32C avg. Yes this is under normal conditions and not just in combat I have been in conversation, inventory menus, combat, standing still etc and the crash can happen any time. But I only experience this in DA:O currently no other game I have does this. The obvious cause is none other than the new patch. It's simple, same computer same game old patch no issues new patch has issues therefore it's the patch! (People have confirmed even removing mods trying re-installs and every other possible change has no effect it is the patch)

Thanks and please can we have a response Bioware "Sorry we released a crap patch a new one is on the way" or something :D
