If I run the exe directly: Dragon Age\\bin_ship\\daorigins.exe I get the following error:
"This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."
Incidentally, I'm running under XP, and I specified an install directory slightly different than the default:
C:\\Program Files\\Electronic Arts\\Dragon Age
Not sure if that's useful info or not for anyone trying to troubleshoot.

the fix is to install an updated file from MS:
http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en
Doing this made my game able to run again.

Worked for me! Thanks!
Be sure you download the appropriate update for your OS (x86, etc etc)!
Once I did this, clicking Play on the launcher worked,
Thanks again!

I can confirm this works. Make sure to download the x86 version, even if you're running a 64 bit OS because the game runs in 32 bit mode so it needs the 32 bit files to work properly.

Once there if you go to the second page you will find more detailed information on the solution to the problem. the issue is revolving around, I must say, a pretty ****ty patch (Version 1.01) and little to no forethought in how it would effect different gamers with different updated software; this patch was released using the newest version of Microsoft Visual C++ and as a result requires the most updated version to sync it properly with DAO executables.
IN otherwords, go to this link: http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en (in IE web browser) and try the three different downloads at the bottom of the page. I tried the first two and then the last one before the game actually worked.
I am running an XP -64bit processor so this might explain why the vcredist_x86.exe file worked for me when the others did not. it takes about 40 seconds to install properly and then the game will run. i hope this helps anybody else having issues.
cudos to architect for the initial research.

IA64 is for the Intel Itanium (aka "Itanic") architecture. I can assure you that no one here will want to install that one.
