Fix didn't work for me sadly. I had to uninstall and reinstall the game, but it also corrupted my save games with it so I lost everything.
Extremely unimpressed with Bioware at the moment.

Nothing I tried (thanks for all the suggestions) worked. I'm running Vista 64 bits and after the patch, the game wouldn't start no matter what I did and computer wouldn't run the Microsoft update because it didn't agree with my OS. I reinstalled the game, lost all downloaded content, including Shale and Warden's Keep which I paid for. Now the game tells me there is no downloadable content, I assume because it still thinks I've already done the downloads, so I can't figure out how to get Shale and Warden's Keep and Dragon Armor back. Also had a memory ring and feral wolf charm from buying new at GameStop. I guess these too are gone forever. Bioware please help! Anyone any suggestions?

Game is working after installing x86 update. However, the game is not seeing my saves. Only have choice of "New Game".
I can see them in %UserProfile%\\Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\Characters
Anyone know what file DA:O uses to look for saves? Like an .ini or something?
UPDATE:
I have Resume option again. Only thing I did was restart system, and I opened DragonAge.ini Located here: Documents\\BioWare\\Dragon Age\\Settings
I made one change to file and saved it. Set anistropic filtering from 0 to 8. I know that line has nothing to do with saves, but maybe saving the INI file affected something?

An odd thing it's happening to some considering C++ runtimes should be updating automatically from Windows Update. I believe that particular update was distributed in July/Aug 2009.
It may be why many are not having issues running patch 1.01 and some are.

TYVM ThaWiz77 !
Finally able to patch to 1.01a and still start the game from launcher. I think the confusion for me is that there is actually two versions of Visual C++ vcredist_x86.exe (2.6 MB for 2005 version & 4.3 MB for 2008 version). Strangely, it's only after installing the 2005 version that solved it for me whereas the 2008 version could not...
(btw running Windows Vista Home Edition 32bits with DLCs)

Worked here on Vista 64 bit, I installed the x64 one first and them the i386 (I suspect the i386 was the only one needed, but seemed pointless not updating the 64bit version as well)

Thank u all. After a frustrating session of multiple crashes and troubleshooting I managed to get it working again. I too concur that everyone choose the x86 version as my game works fine after installing the patch.

Sounds good guys, but please take the lesson from this. Be sure to use Windows Update and get all the updates, Critical & Optional. It will save you much headaches in the future.

There are quite a few posts going around about this problem, the problem is, they all keep getting scolled off when someone else makes a post. I wish that BioWare would make a sticky about this, and the possible solution to save SO many people the problems they are having. Have BioWare replied about this in any thread yet? At all?

Same problem, although I got Windows 7.
Does anyone knows where to find a Microsoft Visuals C++ that works for that OS?
I'm happy I can still run the game directly by running the CD.
its a little bit funny but the patch just breaks the shortcuts on the desktop and from the start menu. Browse to your installation folder and just create a new shortcut to the launcher. The shortcuts were made dynamic through the MSI installation of the game and I think because the launcher may have changed that these dynamic shortcuts break because they don't see the exact same file. If you right click on the shortcut and click properties you will see what I mean. They don't actually link to the EXE file. Creating a new shortcut yourself just fixes that issue.
