Thank you! The game looks beautiful. The environments were my favourite part of the original.

They done a really good job in the first game of making it's setting feel distinct from other fantasy RPG's, more so than Dragon Age I think.

Yeah I'm not sure how either. The combat was fun but not terribly complex, same for the potion making and the leveling. I don't see the developers messing around too much with the way in game decisions are dealt with (all gray area like) seeing as that was what really set it apart from the pack. One can only hope for improvements really (overall graphics, voice overs, load times, stuff like that).

According to Polish gaming sites, it will be possible to import Witcher 1 saves, making decisions, money, gear & abilities carry over.

Supposedly yeah, among other things.

Other info extracted from the article (some of them are the journalists persobnal opinions i will mark such info with *****):

- There will be more exploration

- The scale will be a lot bigger not only in terms of areas (there will
be more areas and each of them a couple of times bigger than areas in
the previous game) but also the scale of events and politics that we
will have a chance to get involved with

- The game will
autoadjust to our imported character - the idea is to even the chances
of newly made characters vs the imported ones - there are no specific
details given about this system though

- (***) Camera movement is improved, everything looks verry exciting and dynamic now (***)

- Except sword fight there is hand combat, magic, traps, bombs, signs and alchemy

- 3 character archetypes: Warrior, Mage, Alchemic. There will be some
sort of skill tree and who you are depends on where you put points. The
points you put affect your skills, bonuses, extra actions and so on

- Cutting limbs off for both big and small monsters as tom gob said "monsters break down into pieces"

- Brutal finishing moves. There are 5 now and they choose themselves depending on situation. There will be more

- Multi-stage hudge boss fights that require different actions and approaches and in some situations involve QTE

- Monsters LV and strenght will be FIXED (unlike lets say oblivion where
they become stronger when you lvl up) so if you come back to old
location you will feel really powerfull

- Your character skills
are much more important than your actual gaming skill - Combat might
look verry dynamic and dexterity driven but there is a precise and
complicated RPG mechanics system running in the background

- (***) I really liked that the game hints you on what to take and whats
not worth it by highliting the important items in orange. We will also
be able to easily compare our items while in inventory screen.(***)

- The story is the most important part of a game and they want to let the player taste the real roleplaying Game experience

- (***) Companions are done verry well and their introduction is excellently and interestingly sewed into the storyline. (***)

- Companions don`t react on our choices and don`t judge them, they won`t
leave us too because of our actions but we can gain a lot of things if
we keep good relations with them. From special tatoos through new
skills, equipement to even sex ( From me fanboyhunter--- MY personal
opinion here is that i`m verry dissapointed by this point as i would
love to see Fallout kind of friend system. They took the easier route..
i hope this will change but i doubdt that. The way they did is was also
consistent with the books - they were all Gray meaning nor good nor bad
(good hearted but with flaws) and they knew that world is a sucky dirty
place and that Geralt is not exactly a good boy either, so they never
really based their friendship with geralt on his deeds - they showed
emotions though and personaly judged Geralt and i would like to see
that in the game)

- Naked chicks will still be there

- The game is much better directed and the flow is verry nice, you get the cinematic feeling while playing

- You will have limited answere time during dialogues (some sort of clock
icon) and the game will choose the one that fits your character best if
you fail to pick your own - that answere however might not be the best
for your goals just the one fitting you char best, something he would
say

- Dialogue options you see are shorter than what geralt
actually says (somewhat like in Mass Effect). You can`t be sure what
Geralt will say exactly.

- What you say is verry importand and depending on your dialogue choices youmight end up with verry different outcomes

- Meditation system has been changed. You can meditate everywhere as long
as its safe there and prepare for fight with elixirs and mutagenes
(From me fanboyhunter: just like the witcher does in the books)

- There is a alchemy minigame where you make potions etc

- There are mutagens (***)that work a little bit like Matter form ff7(***) the number of mutagenes in the world is verry limited

- Equipement Crafting system

- Mod support - easy to use modular editor avaiable for all the modders

- Devs say that graphics shown now are probably about 60% of what the game will look like

- (***) The world is breathtaking and seems to live its own life(***)

- You will be able to enter every building with no loading whatsoever

- Dynamic weather system

Plenty of things are wrong with me. We are going to be here a long time to list them all.

I already told you the reasons, going from PC to console is an attempt for mass-appeal and in the past, they tend to dumbed down the game for consoles. If you played Thief 1 & 2 and the original Deus Ex, then play Thief: Deadly Shadows and Deus Ex: Invisible War. You are going to notice vast changes that weren't for the better.

Yes, but in what ways? Thing is, except for the combat (which requires accurate targeting suited best for a mouse, at least unless you want to pause the game) and hotkeys, there wasn't anything else that would need to be dumbed down for the consoles. Then again, they're apparently changing combat to be more freeform and that's clearly a concession made for the console version.

Original game simply doesn't have any mechanical elements that would be immensely difficult to port over to consoles (hell, if BioWare managed to port DA:O than ANYTHING can be be ported and adjusted for the consoles). If you're talking about dumbing down core parts of the game, yes, I suppose it's possible... they'll get "mainstreamed" in best case scenario.

Awesome! Now it remains to be seen how big of an impact the past decisions have on the new game environment.

Yeah, I'd have to agree.  I wouldn't say the game was perfect by any means, but when it came out it really breathed new life into the genre for me.  Actually I was so taken with the game I have the two english translations of Andrzej Sapkowski's novels that are available (The Last Wish and Blood of Elves).  I was actually quite impressed by how well the game stayed true to the atmosphere of the novels.  Also, even though the two available in English only really touch the surface (I really wish they'd hurry up with the translations -_-), there are a few references in the game that I only really understood after reading the novels, which was kind of cool.
Anyway, on the subject of Assassins of Kings, setting aside all my 'whee! so excited!'-ness ... I'm just hoping the voice acting/dialogue is a little better than it was in the original game.  That was about the only thing that really got under my skin at times.

... Must... Not... Reinstall....TW1....

EDIT: So much for THAT plan, I just realized I still have it installed.

Time to waste much time that I should use for studying.

If they are thinking of developing TW2 for the consoles, even when Witcher 2 is still in development, they can still change the core parts of the game. The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf was announced way after The Witcher was out on the PC. This is all "if's and "but's". In the end, I'm probably worrying about nothing.

Bioware did a great job of porting to DA:O with the exception of not looking as good on the Xbox and lack of isometric view. People I know who choose the console version of DAO, complains about those bits but you have to be thick to play Origins on the consoles than on the PC, unless your PC can't run it.

Thanks for the info Arbiter Libera. It sounds like CD Projekt took a few cues from several other RPGs. I'm not sure how I feel about Mass Effect's approach to dialogue creeping in, but I guess it doesn't clash with the Witcher's style either. The focus on skills intrigues me. With any luck they will expand them enough to make each of those three approaches viable and entertaining.

Dont worry about "consoling" the game - it won't have any dumbing down or streamlining effect. Main goal is the breathtaking and involving, captivating expirience aimed for pc. With a sidequest to bring the core elements unscratched to consoles (well, apart pad adapting which is obvious). I say if the choice is to change something, diminish it in any way to meet the porting requirements they wont port at all...

Well, I myself wish them luck in achiving their goal (console version that is). Without any doubt its a worthwile journey - console players deserve the trip...

What worries me is that I dont have my saves :/ dammit, its like 3 years since I played the game...guess I'll have to replay all the stuff again. Or not :)

See what we will see...

The lore was interesting but I couldn't bring myself to play more than a few hours. Probably been the only RPG (not counting Oblivion which I thought was okay) I never completed/liked. I guess it was a combination of being unable to pick your character, an unfamiliar combat system, and probably the drawn out time periods running around ends of the map finishing quests. The latter I do all the time but I didn't like it in TW for some reason. I only played until that walled city where you had to gain access through a quest. Was beside an abandoned mill or something. Should I give it another shot? :|

Definitely!

Everyone claims that the story picks up really good pace once inside the city ;)

For me it was good from the get-go.
