I can name plenty of sequels of games that were better than their originals.

Good point. However this game, as good as it is, doesn't really have the same depth and doesn't surpass it's original (for me) like those games you listed. It's pretty close, but seems just a bit too scripted and linear. Anyway, if you had read more than just the first page you'd probably have gathered that by now from the responses I posted.Cascadus wrote...

well your in the minority. The game was a vast improvement over the first IMHO
I think it was a step backwards from ME1. The storyline was weak. The only characters I actualy bonded with was Garrus and Tali. But I am starting to like Mordin. As for the rest they seem a bit 2 dimensional.
The clip system is rubbish. prefer the old system better. As for scanning I did like that over the old style, but the mini hacking games only gave you creds no items was a tad dull. Also if you failed once at it you cant force it with Omni Gel anymore. Or have another try but with a much harder difficulty.
I just wish one old character from ME1 would of joined you when asked. Like Wrex or Ashley / Alinko.
The romances in ME2 seemed rushed, and femshep basicaly throws herself at Jacob. Would of been nice to vist Feros or Noveria. Or even walk around the Presidium on the Citadel.

Just take Garrus and Tali. In the first game, they had their little chat-tracks which you could play when you cared to. In the second game you do two missions centering around each of them, and they are more believable in having motivations you have to work with to change, go along with them or go against them. In the first game, sure, there were little ways you could help each out, but you didn't have chances to show sympathy, or argue with them. The same writing skills are at work with some of the other characters, if not all of them, the only issue is that you only have time to get introduced to them. Not unlike the first game.
I do feel like some things were missing, mind you. Investigating dialogues were mysteriously lacking, which is kind of ok for someone who's already played the game, and to be fair it was a bit of an issue with ME1 - which wasn't improved in two. I also think the N7 missions have totally missed the mark in exploration, which people wanted more of, and in better quality. Mass Effect 2 is a better game, but it isn't a direct descendant of ME1 by any means - and if you blended the good aspects of both games you'd get an awesome ME3.
It just sounds like some people are ignoring what was done well in ME2.

Not to mention working with a supremacist organization behind shady attacks in "ME 1". Or how how about dealing more with transhumanism and cybernetics? Let me guess though, just more weak story elements right? amirite?
How about bridges, yes briges, bridges that lead into something. I guess some people just don't like crossing bridges do they? No, they'd rather stay behind and weap and never get over the "first act" of something much larger than what they think they know.
I could go on, but I'm sure some of you get the picture. There are people out there that actually took ME 2 for what it was and enjoyed the story behind it. Stuff like seeing Shep grow, getting involved with TIM more, seeing characters grow and dealing with more complex characters and the sometimes bigger issues that come with them as you gather a team to try to throw a wrench in the Reapers and their allies plans until the inevitable, an actual Reaper invasion upon the galaxy.

Yeah, it's a new story arc. Yes, I like where it's going, but there are immersion elements and the above that should be fixed with a patch or in a future release.

The only release that I think could fix it is ME3. The story, interactions, characters, emails, and the like are all a result of how modular ME2 is. Additional DLC will just produce the same feel.

Agree on that
ME2 is far to linear to be fixed by DLC and Im not willing to pay $15.00 for each 1.5 hour DLC fix as current charging seems to be heading.
To fix ME2, they would have to start at the very begining and just rewrite pretty much everything, adding a huge amount of voice overs and content.
No way they do that so the DLC for ME2 is going to follow the modulare/linear path set out in game to fit in.
Time will tell if they do ME3 right but I know im not buying it with out WRITTEN promises and game play videos showing its fixed and working.
I just no longer trust this NEW Bioware and its representatives.
