Something from far out ideas corp here.
At the end of ME2 taking the paragon option the following dialgoues and events are played out.
The Harbringer leaves the Collector General and says
"You have failed, we will find another way" the general assumption here is that he is speaking to Shep, or to the CG.
However what if he was speaking to other Reapers.
He also says presumably to Shep "You have attracted the attention of things much greater than your self" and " through destruction We are your salvation" (Or was it "We are your salvation through destruction")
So what if the Reapers are not the big bad this time, the reapers them selves are actually protecting us from something even more destructive, they build reapers from advanced civilizations to combat this even bigger evil, perhaps even in the hope that one day they will stop it and no longer have to Harvest the Organics.
I know Soverigns conversation from ME 1 would in many ways say no to this theory but work on the assumption that Sovereign having been alone for so long has lost sight of the reason why they do what they do, and only remembers that they have to do it. Or does not think the why matters, no species would surrender to it willingly no matter what the cause.
Its a wild idea and one that has as much chance of being true as finding a frozen pile of rocking horse droppings in the middle of hell, BUT it seemed like a fun idea to start a debate with.
The reapers on our side next time? (Ending spoilers)

"That which you know as Reapers are your salvation through destruction."
Do I think there's more to the Reapers than just simply wanting to harvest all life? Yes, I think their reasons are still unclear, and I think Mass Effect 3 will throw a huge revelation at us--the Reapers truly think that they're doing what is necessary.
Do I think the Reapers are actually on our side? Not a chance. Organic life wants to exist the way it is existing now, and any entity that wishes otherwise is definitely not on our side.

pretty sure he was speaking only to the general, and the collectors as a whole. they failed.
thats why he ends with "releasing control" and the general is left with a fireball coming towards him, wondering WTF

No, that's not what he's saying... He's saying that there may be the possibility of organic life having a fraction of importance compared to a threat that's greater than all of that life combined, a threat that requires millions of years of genocide and Reaper-creating in order to combat it.

I think it should be a choice to help the reapers. For me personally i would rather fight the reapers and be all like *pew pew*

You know they're giving you (and humanity) an ultimatum, right? Either you join us or you die.

Yes, thats eaxctly what it means.
He was saying "We will destroy the Galaxy and turn your species into goo to make a new reaper"

You know those romantic comedies where the two people hate each other at first, but fall in love by the end of the movie?
It's gonna be like that.
(Shepard and Sovereign, sittin' in a tree, kay eye ess ess eye enn gee)

Actually heres a wild idea for you. What if and I mean this in the literal sense. What if because shepards has killed a couple of reapers. If the reapers at the end of ME 3 decide to let shepard become one of them so he/she could live for eternity. I would really like this option in ME 3.

I think it's more in line with what Sovereign was saying, that organic life is chaotic and messy, and that the reapers are "saving" us from that fate by making us like them, "each independent, free of all weakness, etc..."
