Oh, what a boring weekend I'm going to have without DA:O/A. Guess I'll play AvP instead (I've barely touched that game since I bought it...).

What gives?

It might be a random solution (may not work on everybody), or maybe just luck, but that's what it worked for me...

That's in the "options", then "game" tab, and uncheck the "save automatically" box. Hope that this helps someone.

I logged a call with EA and the next day got a reply back saying they don't support windows 7 64 bit (doesn't say that on the box!) and try running in administrator or compatibility mode. Neither helped although if it was a windows 7 compatibility problem I would have expected the game not to run at all , rather than crash in one particular point.
Anyone else who had this problem, what OS are you using?

hshendon, if you still have the crash, try disabling autosave, then loading a savegame PRIOR entering the Sloth demon's chamber, then enter the chamber and kill him. That's what I did and FINALLY I killed him without crashes.

I can confirm this. I put the settings to bare min and tryed with a save in the sloth chamber and it failed but a previous save running on min settings worked! Now I can carry on and put the settings back to max again.
Thanks for the help!

p.s: this work around worked for me: -
1. went back to a prior save *before* going into the sloth demon chamber
2. put graphics and texture settings to minimum, turned AA off
3. turned off subtitles (if applicable)
4. turned off autosave
5. switched to windowed mode
managed to clear it fully without crashing after doing all the above. hope it helps for any one else stuck.

It's one of my favourite tactics. It makes profit of poor AI, but oh well...if it works...
There's a special part of the Veil that is difficult...in some time you'll find yourself alone against 5-6 mages at once, and unless you've a REALLY powerful char, this tactic is mandatory (I attracted 2 of them, then killed them, attracted/killed one more, then killed the only ones left), as just charging at them (even in any Veil form) is practically suicidal.
And it's not as lenghty once you catch the trick of it
Be smart and use the spells and forms available to you ^^ Those mages are easy as pie if you use the burning form and slap em with a fireball in their midst. Just pause the game and line your fireball so that it hits all mages in the room and then run out yourself, by the time they get on their feet and come for you you can have another fireball lined up on the door of that room.

When I had only Dragon Age: Origins installed, this fight worked fine - in fact I don't think the game crashed AT ALL until my 2nd or 3rd playthrough, and this is off the disk with NO patches installed. After upgrading to 1.04, it still worked fine.
After installing DA Awakenings this fight crashes 100% of the time on either the first or the third of Sloth's form changes. And yes I reinstalled the 1.04 patch. I also updated my video card drivers.
I was able to get through using the workarounds mentioned (i.e. turning every single option off until you are essentially playing a text adventure game), but such does tend to reduce the fun of gameplay. I didn't get a high end gaming PC to play the games in low graphics mode. Interesting note: in high graphics mode, Sloth's 3rd form was an abomination; in low graphics mode, it was a shade.
System Info
AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor 3.4 GHz with 3 GB RAM.
Dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 video cards; SLI enabled.
Windows XP Service Pack 3

What finally worked for me now:
Start game - Minimize - Open task manager - Set game's process priority to high - Play
After so many tries this did not seem like a coincidence to me.
Specs:
Win 7 x64 Ultimate
AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3,4 Ghz
4 GB DDR3 RAM
Radeon HD4870 1 GB
Good luck trying this!

@Phlogophile
Can you tell me how to change the processes priority if Win doesn't allow me to? (whenever I set it to "high" and hit ok then it gives me an "access denied"-message)
My specs
Win7 x64
Athlon II X4 630
4GB DDR3
Radeon 5750 HD
