When I first saw Borderlands I dismissed it as a knock-off of Fallout, but I've watched some vids lately and I've reconsidered. I'm almost sold on buying it but theres a few things I want to know first.

1) Is Borderlands an open-world like Fallout 3 and Oblivion?

2) Does it have a save anywhere feature?

And last) What did you think of the game?

Yeah, I've played Borderlands.

1) Yeah, it's not quite as big I don't think, but there are lots of different places you can go and you have room to explore within them, there aren't really any hidden sidequests though, everything is either linked to the main story or can be picked up from one of the job boards (there is one of them in each city I believe)

2) Borderlands autosaves pretty much constantly, I'm forget exactly whether you can even save, but doing just about anything will cause it to autosave.

I loved it, and I'm still loving it, seeing as there is a new DLC I have yet to pick up. It really is like Diablo with guns, it's got a lot of charm, a pretty nice skill system for an FPS, and it's just really fun to play. Plus The Island of Doctor Ned DLC is a whole lot of fun, Mad Moxxie's Underdome will be a great test of your abilities, and it doesn't look like the DLC will stop coming anytime soon. If you liked FO3 but wouldn't mind playing a game that was a little more shooter than RPG, Borderlands should be perfect.

Thanks TwitchMonkey, I guess I'll have to give it a try. As it does sound good, and no I don't mind FPS games, I play just about every kind of genre.

1. It's open-world, but there isn't much to do outside of shooting. The driving is god-awful

2. It saves anytime you pass a New-U station.

It was a fun little game. Don't buy it unless you plan to play multi-player. It really loses it's value if you play by yourself.

Yeah, it's not open world in the way that Fallout 3 or Oblivion are. There are separate areas that you can move between, with loads. A lot of the environments seem pretty big, though, and there seems to generally be quite a bit of freedom to explore and loot stuff (although certain areas you'll pass through are pretty much linear point A-to-point B affairs).

I agree with what Twitchmonkey says about the game being like Diablo with guns. I actually don't love the game the way a lot of people do, and I've more or less lost interest in it, but I should say that I'm no expert on the game, either, as I'm probably less than halfway through it.

I feel like it's definitely a better match for FPS fans overall than RPG fans. I do think it's fun, but I can't see that there would be much point in playing it one player, and I wouldn't recommend it to someone who is looking for a story-driven game.

Well, I played it all the way through twice by myself, but I agree that it is probably more fun with 4 player online. I wouldn't recommend split-screen though, it's cool that they added it, but it's just too clunky. I didn't find the driving to be too bad except when in combat, the vehicle combat is very bad, but only required in a few instances.

1)yes,though not as big from what I remember.

2)From what I remember it autosaves at specific points and when quiting.

I hated Borderlands personally, even with friends it's just a mindless FPS.Little rpg features, but tons o' guns even though 10 hours in you'll probl have 4 or 5  good ones and start encountering trash weapons more. Also my biggest letdown with the game is the almost nonexistant story. No backstory on your character, and you learn little on your main causes for being an adventurer(or what your after for that matter).I didn't get any dlc cause after 1 playthrough I was pretty much done with the game,so maybe their were more story in them but the main game's story was pretty bad IMO.I traded it in toward DA:O which was a much better game IMO.If you want funny dialogue and boring fps action with 3 peeps then this'll be the game for you,but there are better rpgs(and games out there).

I liked borderlands.for a couple of days. Ignore the "RPG" claims, this is a shooter straight up.

there is practically no story and absolutely no character development. You run around and shoot crap, looking for bigger guns so you can run around and shoot crap.

Keep that in mind and you should have fun, because it is a little quirky and there is a lot of cap to shoot. This is one of the few games I recommend tat you play multiplayer once you get the hang of it. Playing with 3 other people running around shooting crap with you makes it more hectic, which is really all this game has going for it.

Also...worst end boss in a video game ever.

Slightly made up for by one of the most 'Holy crap!" bosses (Rahk Hive) in recent memory.

Well, there are those two areas where the vehicular combat is pretty necessary. And they both sucked pretty hard...

I agree for the most part on specific points, there is really no character development (the different character serve to alter gameplay, not the story) and the story itself is pretty limited, but I disagree that you can disregard the RPG elements completely. In the story sense, sure, I've already admitted that, but the different characters really do play differently, from one to another and from spec to spec. In the gameplay sense, those RPG mechanics do change things up. The fun does mostly come from getting bigger and better guns and just the enjoyment of having gun battles, that is certainly true.

Also, I didn't mind the final boss.

necessary. And they both sucked pretty hard...

Agreed, but for the other 95% of the game, you can just use vehicles as transportation, and they usually do a fiar enough job in that regard.

I would rather headbutt a wall for five minutes than play Borderlands.

Or something like that; I played it for a few hours and I just couldn't get into it. The UI/FoV felt really cramped, the weapon comparison thing was cumbersome and there seemed to be a lot of pointless features.

One of the downsides to randomized loot I suppose, but at least it keeps things surprising, you don't know that a certain enemy will or will not drop a powerful weapon.

It would be simple enough to make a boss drop a randomized weapon of a certain rarity.

After reaching max level (61), there's not much else to play for except to farm Crawmerax (if you have General Knoxx DLC loaded) for pearls (or some oranges). Other than that, it's not that bad of a game to pass the time while you're waiting for more ME or DA DLC (or sequel) to come out.

i played a good chunk in single player, and i still enjoyed it quite a lot. it's true though, co-op is definitely where it's at.

as for RPG elements, you only get one active skill and then all the rest are passive bonuses. i'd say it's Diablo and WoW wrapped up in a shooter.

story was whatever and the damn iterations of guns can get out of hand (still a better inventory than ME1 though), but the mindless fun and often hilarious characters more than made up for it. The Island of Dr. Ned DLC is also worth getting.

It reminds me of Phantasy Star online, with first person shooter elements. You get a team of up to four, get some quest ex. kill such and such, get such and such, and enemies drop loots ranging from common to super rare.

Personally, I thought it was okay. Then again, none of my friends have it. If you know a few people who would play the game a lot with you, I can see it being fun.

If you've gotten all the way to 61 and enjoyed it, I'd say you've already gotten plenty of value out of the game. There will probably also be more DLC in a couple of months, if the speed of the last three is any indication. Plus there are those ridiculously long 20 round matches at the Underdome, maybe you've already done them but I can't imagine taking the time.

Doesn't the DLC for borderlands have the limited install crap or some kind of thingy?

Also heard from a friend on steam, that he read somewhere that it came with some kind of "iffy" ware on it, not sure what he meant(or if it was true).

Usually a game with limited installs keeps me from buying it, I have borderlands, but no DLC.

I found borderlands fun, until I eventually got fed up with people who would mass loot anything that dropped, and then left. Bad, Bad memories from the same thing in Diablo 2.

When I made games, people rarely spoke, Or didn't speak any english and of course Would stay in game until they got a rare drop, grabbed it before anyone would see it, and leave.

Maybe they fixed this issue, but the people that played the game when I did, really ruined it for me.
Only leveled a Siren to 60 or so. One thing I loved the most was the ability to respec(didn't have to make multiple characters!)!

stick to playing with friends. any party based game has a high potential of being ruined by strangers.

Aye, or play alone, I'm working my way through the new DLC and despite some annoyances (those damnable drones come to mind) I'm doing fun all by myself. Of course that doesn't mean you can't still play with friends some of the time, but it's good solo too.
