Hey everyone,
I'm looking at pulling together gear from whatever sources I can find to build a Defense based character. Can someone give me a feel for what constitutes a "high defense"? I'm looking to avoid getting hit rather than absorb hits with armor.
If I gather enough gear to give me +30 defense, is that signficant? Does it need to be more like +50? I just don't have any idea what scale Defense works on, or how increasing your defense affects your survivability, point for point.
Thanks for any insight!
How much is "high" defense?

You might want to just increase Agility/Dexterity. I haven't really focused on high defense characters, but over 90 seems good.

Autohit attacks and stuns aside, here's a *rough* outline of what to expect from various defense ratings:
160+ - Bosses can't hit you
150+ - Elites can't hit you, Bosses have difficulty
140+ - Mobs can't hit you, Elites have difficulty
120+ - Mobs hit you ~50% of the time
160+ - Bosses can't hit you
150+ - Elites can't hit you, Bosses have difficulty
140+ - Mobs can't hit you, Elites have difficulty
120+ - Mobs hit you ~50% of the time

Yeah, that sounds right. My level 25 melee Rogue finished the game with Defense 167. The only enemies that gave me grief were mages. Spells ignore Defense.

Errr... this doesn't make any sense ?
120+ - Mobs hit you ~20% of the time sounds more like it

Bear in mind that hit rates are relative, and so is "high."
The rate you get hit with is a factor of (YourDefense - TheirAttack). If they have low attack scores, you can afford low defense scores. As the game progresses, enemies attack scores will increase, and as a result your defense scores need to increase at the same rate to maintain parity.
In a nutshell, a high Defense score at level 12 is vastly different from a high defense score at level 30.

Out of curiosity... To achieve 160+, 150+, 140+, and so on defense, how much Dex would you need?

This is, according to the wiki, the defense formula:
DefenseValue = 40 + Dexterity + DefenseBonuses
So it will depend heavily on your equipment as well as your Dex.

my dual wield warrior has 138 defense 47 armor [with defender buff] and 168 hit attack:>
he never really missed and never gets hit, im using him as tank due to that, keep in mind mobs that are behind you get +20 attack

TBH, you can solo the game with archer, invest in DEX + spell resistance and elements + nature resist, pick that sustained skill that reaises your defense, and wipe mages 1st i had 260 defense with that kind of archer + skill based 20% chance to "dodge", killing casters was priority

Yes it is very nice to have high dex. I played my rogue pure dex through Origins and only stated cun in Awakening. Yes bosses (almost) never hit, except for their special attacks.
Backstab a dragon? - Just forget it. The will always kick your belly even if taunted and threatend by a tank. Grab and overwhelm can also not be avoided. This makes a high defense for any boss fight nearly useless. Well, just my two cents.
Edit: @Killyox - Am I assuming right that you have an dex warrior?
