Lol why all the steady stream of Oghren hate? To each their own I guess.

Cos contrary to what Bioware thinks, Oghren is not a "fan favourite".

He probably will be back (this is the spoilers section so I can't say why - but basically it is for the same reason he was in Awakening).

But if he is, I won't use him. I lost respect for him in Awakening.

Seriously, the guy is like Jar Jar Binks you guys might like him but the people don't, seriously he is like Jar Jar Binks if anything next expansion or sequel just show him in a three second sequence and let it be done.

Also will Darth Gaider force the new converstation system in the next expansion. Will I have to travel the world to find objects just so I can talk to my teammates again? Or can I do it the normal way like just going up to that companion and talking to it?

ROFL!!  Darth Gaider.. oh man hehehe

Well actually after all the speculation was laid to rest..one of the Dev team actually came out and 'fessed up" to the fact that Oghren was THEIR old returning favorite...

As I thought. :P

Ah! Well, that makes more sense. They should have announced as "developer favourite" instead of "fan favourite" then, though. :-)

People STILL don't like Oghren? Sure, he's comic relief, but c'mon guys, he's funny!

I love how he constantly tries to hit on Sigrun. Why should the player be the only one with a Romance system?

And c'mon. Best line ever in Awakening: (paraphrasing here)

Oghren: I thought you said it'd be hot if I became a Grey Warden!

Felsi: We were *roleplaying!*

Oghren sucks. He's a cartoon stereotype of the worst sort. He's just stupid and obnoxious. Can we have a real dwarf, please? One that advances dwarfkind? Like Ser Gorim or any of the other likable, classy dwarves in DA:O or Awakenings? Heck, even the Carta "dusters" from DA:O would be a leap forward as a traveling companion.

Ehhhhhh, well, he comes to the realization that he's not a good family man, and is better at killing things & getting drunk. (Meaning: will appear in more sequels, kid will grow up hating his father, probably become enemy in future sequel.)

New conversation system: meh. I think the idea of environmental objects being triggers sometimes is fine, but should not be the only way to initiate. It just makes my finger even more glued to the Tab key because sometimes it's not obvious what those objects are. Use it and blend it with the previous system in longer sequels. How would it work in romances? Click on the moon? On a box of heart shaped candy? Or ... well, the game has to keep a reasonable rating.

Sigrun not enough for you?
And as an Oghren fan, you'll have to excuse me taking this too personally, but he's not a stereotype. A Dwarven stereotype would be a humourless midget who speaks with a scottish accent, and drinks in excess for absolutely no reason. Oghren is self-destructive because he's desperately unhappy, which you can see for yourself when he actually (admittedly rarely) lets his guard down. Thing is, you've got to put up with the guy long enough to witness those moments.
I mean, I don't actually expect to change your mind, but to me at least, all the Oghren haters seem to use excuses with absolutely no basis in fact.

Oghren is meh. I felt like he was force-fed to me in Origins, and when I found out he was the "fan-favorite" I asked all of the gamers I know if he was their favorite and they all (to a person) said: no.

When he was in my party, I just didn't care if he went down, not because his personal story lacked potential, but because I felt everything about him was force-fed to me.

He is the character in novels that I skim-read to get past as fast as I can - the one that actually detracts from the dynamics that are building and solidifying among the rest.

If he does return in the next game I hope he is killable. It would be worth it just to stabby knife him.

Oghren was my least favourite companion in DAO and DAA - but there was a difference.  In DAO, I still kinda liked Oghren, it was that I just found him kind of one-dimensional compared to the other companions.  But in DAA, I found myself beginning to really dislike him.  There was nothing new about Oghren in DAA, nothing to inspire me to get to know him better and, because there are considerably fewer potential companions in DAA, I found myself really resenting having to use him as much as I did in the 1st part of the game.

Shale said in DAO, "Familiarity breeds contempt", and after having played with Oghren in both DAO and DAA, I feel about Oghren the same way Shale does about the folk of Honnleath (i.e. if I never seem him again, it'll be 20 million years too soon).  If Bioware does feel the urge to bring back Oghren in future installments, I hope they do so in such a way as to allow those of us who have had enough of Oghren to leave him 'on the shelf'...

I agree about Ohgren. In DAO, he was amusing. In Awakening, his schickt got old really fast, and there was something bitter/disgusting/unattractive/one-dimensional about his whole demeanor. He wasn't pleasant or amusing or noble company. Just pathetic.

To the OP: we can only hope that the "new' convo system ends up on the failed experiment floor. However, there surprisingly seems to be people who actually like the new system and the "ease" of not having to keep checking in themselves with companions and having the off chance that there is no new convo to be had -- in favor of scouring the map with each party member (whether you'd prefer to have them in your traveling party or not) hoping to encounter a random inanimate object that will trigger an important information dump that moves the relationship along.

Actually, you can tell him to GTFO before he joins. This is a + :-)

I was lukewarm on Oghren in DA:O. He seemed alright, but I never used him except when forced to. In Awakening, it seems like Oghren is a caricature of Oghren in DA:O. Just a non-stop stream of fart, ******, and drinking jokes. I much prefer Nathaniel and Anders over him and left Oghren at the keep at the first chance I got.

Regarding the new convo system, I don't think it's all bad. Perhaps they could integrate it with the old one from the first game. I actually liked heading back to camp and chatting everyone up. But I still think it's good to have some conversations initiated by interacting with the environment while exploring.

See, I would prefer if Oghren were a stereotypical 'drinks for no reason' dwarf. The fact that he is clearly portrayed as an alcoholic who drinks to escape his problems is  the reason I loathe him so. I hate that I have to be his enabler and give him booze to get to know him. I don't want to be friends with a drunken dead beat father who drinks to avoid responsibility.  I haven't finished Awakening yet, so I haven't seen if he sobers up and takes responsibility for himself and his family, but it bothers me that making that happen will be my responsibility, because I have to get friendly with him, and that the main way to get friendly with him is to ply him with alcohol.
If he were portrayed in the more stereotypical way, in which drinking is not a problem and has no consequences, that would be preferable to me than having his drinking portrayed  as a problem with consequences, but we ignore those consequences anyway and laugh while Oghren passes out. It would be extra hilarious if he were die choking on his own vomit. :?

Being a fan favourite doesn't mean that he is the favourite of every single DA fan in existance. I thought that was kinda obvious but apparently not.

True enough.  But where was this universal vote that all DA fans participated in where it was decided he was one of the most popular characters?  I can't think of anyone more UNpopular than Oghren except maybe Sten and Loghain.

I don't get the Oghren hate; personally I thought he was one of the more tolerable characters of Dragon Age. I'm not so sure the cowboy stereotype that Oghren represents (right down to his voice acting) fits into a high fantasy setting, but he was amusing enough.
