Oghren sucks. He's a cartoon stereotype of the worst sort. He's just stupid and obnoxious. Can we have a real dwarf, please? One that advances dwarfkind? Like Ser Gorim or any of the other likable, classy dwarves in DA:O or Awakenings? Heck, even the Carta "dusters" from DA:O would be a leap forward as a traveling companion.

Sigrun not enough for you?
And as an Oghren fan, you'll have to excuse me taking this too personally, but he's not a stereotype. A Dwarven stereotype would be a humourless midget who speaks with a scottish accent, and drinks in excess for absolutely no reason. Oghren is self-destructive because he's desperately unhappy, which you can see for yourself when he actually (admittedly rarely) lets his guard down. Thing is, you've got to put up with the guy long enough to witness those moments.
I mean, I don't actually expect to change your mind, but to me at least, all the Oghren haters seem to use excuses with absolutely no basis in fact.

See, I would prefer if Oghren were a stereotypical 'drinks for no reason' dwarf. The fact that he is clearly portrayed as an alcoholic who drinks to escape his problems is  the reason I loathe him so. I hate that I have to be his enabler and give him booze to get to know him. I don't want to be friends with a drunken dead beat father who drinks to avoid responsibility.  I haven't finished Awakening yet, so I haven't seen if he sobers up and takes responsibility for himself and his family, but it bothers me that making that happen will be my responsibility, because I have to get friendly with him, and that the main way to get friendly with him is to ply him with alcohol.
If he were portrayed in the more stereotypical way, in which drinking is not a problem and has no consequences, that would be preferable to me than having his drinking portrayed  as a problem with consequences, but we ignore those consequences anyway and laugh while Oghren passes out. It would be extra hilarious if he were die choking on his own vomit. :?

Your reasons for disliking his character are justified, but the last highlighted line bothered me.

It was because it wasn't the slighest bit humorous.

Bah, I never liked Oghren... I loved the **** out of Sten though. Not only was he the best tank ever, he ****ing kicked so much ass no matter what he did. Damnit in the next Dragon Age the Quinari should try to take over Ferelden like Sten says and he should join you to make peace or some ****. He's a ****ing beast... NO, NO, NO! Not a beast a god!!! I miss the old chat system. It fealt weak this time not being able to have relationships and carry out different things with your members. It makes you miss DA:O characters big time.

I feel sorry for Oghren. He was once a somebody then his world crashed and the only way he could make himself feel better is with alcohol. Oghren is always and will always remain as one of my favorites.

P.S There are a lot of Morrigan, Wynne, Alistair, Dog, Sten, Zevran, Shale & Leliana haters too. So why do you all complain no reason?

Oghren was easily one of the best party members of DA:O (dunno about Awakening). I question the sanity of people who hate him. How do you hate that hilarious little dwarf?

Being a drunk is anything but hilarious. Alcoholism is not a joke, I avoid those kind of people like the plague in 'the real world' so why would I want one forced on me in my games as well? His only real redeeming factor is his lines at the end of DA:O before the final assault, which are totally epic... aside from that he's a deadbeat.

He was hilarious when he's sober too. Like him hitting on Wynne, talking about Alistair and his pike, and the greasing up weapon part. Also, he's the only one genuinely insists on rescuing his wife.

The guy isn't constantly drunk, and as the poster who also replied to you pointed out:  He's hilarious even when he's sober.

He's a Dwarf ffs.  Their entire race in just about every fantasy has been centered around killing things with axes (or hammers), blacksmithing, and drinking excessive amounts of alcoholism.

This isn't the real world.  Alot of content in game is inappropriate when compared to the real world, but this is entertainment and Oghren is a harmless, vulgar, funny guy.

I tolerate Oghren...he was MORE humourous in Origins,  in Awakening it seems like they tried to pump up his personality..whatever it was they did,  it rings false...sour note.

Cutscene of when you first encounter Oghren again...him all smiling and waving at you while killing darkspawn.

That was never the Oghren I knew...although I realize it was done for dramatic and or comedic effects.   The old characters you do meet..seem like shells of themselves..not as deep nor as personable.

But I can say the same of Alistair and Wynne, given their brief cutscenes.    Hollow shells ...nothing resembling their former selves in Awakening.

But I guess thats because its an expac, not a full game..and Bioware is "slowly?" removing these companions/characters.    I am assuming the next installment of the game we won't see anyone we knew from before...matter of fact,  our characters might be brand new..with a new focus of some sort.

I guess I just don't like these sort of abrupt endings...a little more tapering off gradually...would work well, but ..time and budget constraints..probably don't allow for that.

I agree, the Oghren that was in Awakening was not the same Oghren I knew in Origins.

Maybe this is an example stellar writing, as it shows the character had gone through some major changes due to the events that occurred between the two games ((it's hard to not type in Spoilers sometimes!))

Or it could be an example of some terrible writing, as the writers just altered the character's motivations and personality to fit their pre-planned storyline.

Saying its just due to being an expansion is kinda a weak excuse imo. Throne of Bhall was an expansion and was huge, and also did a far better job of carrying on from BG2. Something that Awakening does a sad to say absolutely terrible job of.

I really fear that now that EA is fully calling the shots we're just going to continue to get short dev times and unfleshed out/unfinished feeling games from here on out, and I hate to feel that way having been a huge Bioware fan for going on 10 years now.

I think that what you do with your party members DA:O should determine who comes with you in DA:A. If i remember correctly... after getting it on with Liliana, most excellently, she said she would like to travel the lands with me after the blight, then shouldn't she of all people be in the expansion with me?

Im sure that other members of your party would say similar things about sticking around with you after the blight, but im not sure, i beat DA:O a while ago and i cant remember.

I like Oghren's funny drunkness, but i really think that you should be able to choose who your trusty sidekick in DA:A should be.

"You can't keep the Archdemon waiting. You'll hurt its feelings, it might just turn around the whole Blight and go home. Nobody wants that."

I certainly hope so.

I liked Oghren a lot in Origins, he has a pretty dark story that he deals with by being an alcoholic. In this one I did feel they dialed it up a bit heavy, at the beginning he's basically just a caricature who spends more time belching than talking in conversations. I still like him though and would be happy to see him in future games.

Well that'd be EPIC. Imagine strolling into Vigil's hand-in-hand with Leliana...and kicking arse side by side. that'd be awesome ;)

Seriously, the guy is like Jar Jar Binks you guys might like him but the people don't, seriously he is like Jar Jar Binks if anything next expansion or sequel just show him in a three second sequence and let it be done.

Also will Darth Gaider force the new converstation system in the next expansion. Will I have to travel the world to find objects just so I can talk to my teammates again? Or can I do it the normal way like just going up to that companion and talking to it?

You clearly have no taste.

I don't really understand the Oghren hate. A lot of people view him as a one-trick pony, but he's actually one of the more sincere and interesting characters in the game. Usually the drunk is the comic relief and nothing more, but in Oghren's case he is actually extremely multi-dimensional - just that you often don't see those dimensions if you focus on his dumb jokes and don't talk to him enough or read into his behaviours.

I've come to expect that from BioWare fans, though... the most archetypical, see-it-coming-a-mile-away plot twist characters are always the ones they love (coughCarth/Kaiden/Lelianacough), but the ones who are actually interesting inversions and subversions of existing archetypes get called "one dimensional" and "unoriginal" for whatever reason.

Reality break. DA is a game. Oghren is a character- so not real.

You know what isn't hilarious? Overly serious, self-righteous nerds preaching about the dangers of alcohol (or anything for that matter) in relation to a video game character.   My suggestion:  leave the house, find a friend, and go knock back a few.
