Any situation where Tempest is better than an assault rifle?

I'm getting close to selecting my weapon for my insanity adept, and I'll be taking an assault rifle.

But I'm such a big fan of the Tempest that I'm sort of bummed out.

So is there any situation where the Tempest is superior to an assault rifle?  Any use at all for this thing?

Maybe if you're math-inclined, you would consider that currently I have 5/5 SMG upgrades, but only 1/5 AR upgrades.  Is the SMG inferior even at this point?  Or at which point will the upgrades render the SMG useless?

Thanks.

I like the SMG against Geth in certain missions but overall I prefer the Assault Rifle esp. once you've gotten the first several upgrades under your belt.

Well, I suppose it could still be better at taking out shields at close-range, seeing as it's rate of fire is slightly quicker, I think. I love the Tempest as well, you're not alone. Perhaps while fighting Harbinger, or a Praetorian? Looking forward to the new SMG, the locust with the Kasumi DLC.

If your Tempest is fully upgraded it probably offers higher raw damage against shields at least. However, the Vindicator's refire rate can be improved by firing rapid burst instead of holding the trigger down, and it will almost always provide more hits/headshots than the Tempest, even without the accuracy upgrade.

You'll probably want to stick with the AR in general, and use the pistol/SMG as backup when you run out of ammo.

Tempest is better than any AR at taking down shields at close range. It's the best weapon in the game for that (apart from heavies). Considering that it has 1.5x against shields, and another 1.5x from the shield piercing upgrade, that shouldn't surprise anyone. Though it's true that assault rifles are more accurate and you can land more headshots with them, so if you have good aim the Vindicator might come on top.

I could swear in your videos with the hacked geth the Vindicator was still faster than the Tempest?  (Or was it just faster in time til death?)  Am I misremembering?

In my videos Vindicator killed the shields in 2.5 sec, Tempest in 2.7 sec. But I didn't have the AR penetration and SMG shield piercing upgrades. The upgrades would give Tempest enough advantage to make it better.

Well that's exactly the kind of answer I was looking for, thanks.

I certainly wouldn't be using my weapon against health as an adept anyway, so the Tempest lives on!  (Against Geth and Blue Suns.)

Doesn't the SMG's shield-piercing bonus apply to barriers as well? If so, it seems like it would be an optimal choice against collectors, too.

I mostly use the tempest at close range, since its recoil limits the effectiveness. It pretty much kills anything pretty darn fast.

A fully upgraded Tempest can take down the tubes in the final fight easier that an assault rifle due to ammo capacity. With the Tempest you can take it down in 2 waves. It's harder for AR's to do this because of their fire rate and their refire(Vindicator).

Just use the Carnifex for that.  Tube armor moves up, 2 quick rounds into each tube, and 2 tubes are down.  Repeat after killing next wave.  Armor up, pop pop, move up an inch, pop pop.  Repeat.

Soldiers will take 2 tubes in one wave since most soldiers usually get the Revenant instead of using the Vindicator.
