Why do it anymore? It outright kills people, and seriously shortens the lifespan of everyone else who survives.

But... The Archdemon is dead - which was the ENTIRE reason for drinking Darksapwn blood. Why doesn't anyone even bother to ask "Do we really need to do this procedure anymore?"

Am I missing something?

Well, you continually have to do it in order to maintain troop strength in case another blight comes out. Whether that be the next day or a few hundred years. If they stop doing it then when it comes to pass and a blight happens it would be hard to start up the process again.

The taint provides other benefits. It binds people to the Order. And it can make them sense the darkspawn. Although seeing how the Orlesian Wardens were completely owned, I fail to see how useful that ability really is.

Pretty much.

It would be rather difficult to have an accurate estimate of their numbers around Thedas if they all wait until a blight to undergo the joining. That and their chain of command could possibly be crippled by joining deaths.

Hmmm. I guess another Archdemon of sorts could somehow manifest itself in the future. I guess no one really knows.
Still, it doesn't really seem so important as to be continually force-feeding people Darkspawn blood. For the moment, it just seems like ritual for ritual's sake. There is the "sensing" ability, but that doesn't seem so all-important that you need every recruit to have it at the possible expense of their lives.

It'd be interesting if someone would have brought it to question. Maybe in the next expansion someone could bring up the line of questioning.

There were what, a dozen Orlesian wardens? They were outnumbered, unprepared, and destined to die for the sake of the plot.

It's not just the ability to 'sense darkspawn' but also an immunity to the taint/disease that accompanies the darkspawn.

Like other people have said, troops need to be maintained because a Blight can occur at any time. If you believe that old Gods are the arch demons then there will be at least two more Blights. Look at the game. Nearly a whole year passes and you kill the arch demon and in that time frame you receive no reinforcements at all from Grey Wardens from other nations (besides Riordan) because of communications issues (Fereldan is fairly isolated). If you had not already been a Warden, Fereldan would have fallen and the darkspawn would have ended many more lives before the Blight had finally ended.

Grey Wardens will always be needed so long as the Darkspawn are a threat, be they a war band or an army led by an Archdemon. The order survives in part because of the tithes lent to them by the country's they are based out of which in turn ensures that they have the necessary support to recruit more people. Tradition does the rest, and as long as you have Commanders of the Grey who dont want to be alone and people desperate enough to join then you will have Grey Wardens.

The only thing that concerns me is the supply of Archdemon blood. One can only assume that the tiniest drop is needed to make a Warden, yet how long can they last even with such a small tax on each vial of Archdemon Blood? I have read mention that a substitute is possible but few Darkspawn possess such corruption as to be nearly as effective as the prescribed material.

Also, how the heck did the Grey Warden find this out? Did they kill the Archdemon, see it leave its host and then drink the blood of its origional host in order to slay it again? Thats what bother me the most, they where never clear on how they came about this knowledge.

I believe any darkspawn's blood can be used in the joining as long as there is enough lyrium to boost its amount of corruption. Also, I think our character's joining used regular dark spawn blood since we got it ourselves in the wilds and it was mention that the mages prepared the concoction which hints that lyrium was used.
