Every character that says the word golem in DAO is mispronouncing it.  They all say the word as gollum, when it's actually pronounced go-lem.  Pretty sloppy on the part of the dialogue writers, or whoever told the voice actors how to say it.  Ok, there actually is a variant pronunciation in Hebrew, but that isn't gollum either.

True, it's been tossed around on the forum here abit, it's definitely not right. Not exactly sure why the mistake there but I actually like it. IMO it sounds really cool when people say it, especially Shale.

I've never heard it said other than how they say it in DA. Maybe that's why they have it mispronounced? Because a lot of people do?

I think this could be partly true. Much like "potato" is pronounced differently depending on where you are, perhaps Golem is as well.

Living in Eastern US, everyone I know pronounces it as Go-Lem. Perhaps the common pronunciation in the UK and other areas of the world is Gollum?

Most likely the same reason the Orlesians in the game have really over the top faux French accents, for whatever reason, someone over at Bioware thought it sounded better. Everytime I hear "Gollum" though it reminds me of Aussies I know, they tend to pronounce things with a soft O that I pronounce with a hard one.

No - Golem is pronounced with a long 'O' and you pronounce the 'E'. Here is some information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golem.

Gollum is a character in LOTR so nicknamed because of the noise he made in his throat.

The official pronunciation is going to have to be changed soon. If absolutely no one associated with the DA:O voice acting knew the "correct" pronunciation, this battle is already lost.

To be honest, I've never heard the word said aloud before DA:O. I've read it in plenty of books, and other games such as World of Warcraft, but I never heard the pronunciation.

I always assumed it was pronounced "go-lem" as well, but I have no basis to comment because DA:O's pronunciation could just as easily be correct.

Nope.
Golem is a specific jewish/hebraic word. That is what it is.

I noticed that nobody cares, go make a better game with perfect pronunciations if you're that bothered.

Yeah, it was a minor annoyance, but this is a fictional world, so it's not a big deal.

Even **** and moan about other people ****ing and moaning!  Apparently, Even assuming a lackluster education any 5 year old idiot can check websters, to borrow from your eloquence, www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/golem,  (Or again, apparently, maybe not)

Regardless the OP was just commenting on something he noticed, No need to pop in and douche bag it up (especially if you are wrong)

You're funny, but ok here you go then:

http://www.yourdictionary.com/golem
http://emol.org/kabbalah/golem/
http://www.jewishvir...aism/Golem.html
http://www.jewishmag...lem_history.htm
That do ya?

Oh and by the way, I didn't invent the word: "Douche" either, but I think both of us know how to pronounce that one.

Erm... he's just pointing out a mistake. It is pronounced incorrectly, according to the dictionary and according to history, and I found it mildly irritating throughout the game.

Someone else created a thread about this a while back (when my profile had been deleted so I couldn't comment in it myself) and he got flamed to high heaven as well. It's strange.

Hm. And I noticed that every post you make causes you to sound like even more of a wanker than the last [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/whistling.png[/smilie]

Edit: Oh, and golem is pronounced the same over here in England. Not only that, but even if the pronunciation here were different they still would have used the American pronunciation, as they did for other words where the pronunciation is different for each country, such as 'route' and 'progress'.

People have disagreed with me on that before, but the fact is that I am right and they are wrong. Not arrogance, just objectivity and superior linguistic knowledge.

There's often a difference between the pronunciation of words in their language of origin and their pronunciation in English, though. English is a patchwork language, after all. It think by now 'Golem' is used often enough in the english language for it to have qualified for its own English pronunciation, which ironically probably differs between the UK and the US.

Ugh.  Mispronounced according to the proper pronunciation.  How about Webster's dictionary?
