It seems that some users I see on the forums use avatars and I can't seem to find anywhere in the selection options. Such as someone using Nihilus, or Sacred Ashes Leliana.
Do you get additional choices for more posts you make or something?

No, they are using a Dragon Age workaround to get custom avatars. Dragon Age game uploads the avatar of your character which you can use here in the forum, but before it does so they change it to something else, getting custom avatar.
