Slayer, you're right. Female Shepard has Thane, who makes the best possible romance subplot I've ever seen in a game.

Somebody said it again, DA romances versus ME2 "romances".

I'll get around to playing Mass Effect. Eventually.
Why is it okay to romance all these creatures in Mass Effect, but an awakened darkspawn grosses people out?

I don't know it's a fine line you walk in that game about how much freaky you'll accept before you get off the Alien bus.
It starts pretty human-like with Liara T'Soni.
Gets stranger in ME2 with Thane the space frog.
Next thing you know you're with Garrus.
Makes Elves and Dwarves a real moot point don't it?
Maker, don't try to say that in the DA2 forum. I've said the same thing there but there are people who see it as personal offense against their favored playstyle. If I ask why someone would want to watch a slow, badly animated movie with constant interruptions, that's a grave insult.Brockololly wrote...
But I agree- I don't understand why games are trying to mimc films. Playing a video game has its own set of strengths and I think by making games more "cinematic" ultimately kills any kind of creativity and innovation in making video games stand apart. No offense to BioWare or any othe people making cinematic games, but if I want to watch a movie, I'll go watch something directed by a Christopher Nolan , Tarantino or a real film maker. Its like trying to compare the best video game character's "acting" to that of a real person- the technology for games isn't there yet, so its goofy to try and take games that route, IMO.

I saw a fanart tonight with a naked femShep and Garrus and thought WTF is that?! If that showed up in my boudoir, I'd be reaching for a giant can of Raid, not the personal lubricant.adneate wrote...

Lol, yeah it does. I just think its funny that those characters are acceptable romance options, but a potentially "cleaned up" darkspawn is![]()

Man, I came at gaming from an entirely different angle- MUSH roleplay, which is completely text-based, character and story focused, with a dim view of mindless looting and killing. My husband had been trying to get me into video games and I sniffed at them until I tried FO3, Oblivion, and then DAO which convinced me toon games could offer smart and literate roleplay. I think my previous impression was the right one.adneate wrote...

Yeah that is the technical definition of RPG going way back to the beginning, if you kill things for XP and increase in level while doing quests it's an RPG dispite the acute lack of RP. Japanese RPGs are even worse since you just listen to awful dialogue between predefined characters for hours and hours (not to discredit the good ones like Valkyria Chronicles, Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger) the genre is defined by a style of gameplay mechanics not a style of storytelling. One of the reasons I fell so hard for Black Isle was their storytelling which was totally unique to me at the time.
Oh noes, if you've started with those games, you've pretty much seen the best that first person sandbox adventures have to offer, currently, imo. Bioware is apparently unique among developers in their choice-driven games. Most developers won't touch those types of games because they have to spend money on so much content that 90% of their players won't even see.
There are some very good stories in linear games. Starcraft and Warcraft are both real time strategy games with good storylines. Bioshock is a first person shooter with a good story. The Legend of Zelda games have good stories with lots of puzzled dungeons to solve.
But if you are looking for a 'role playing' game... I don't know, maybe the Fable series? I've heard Gothic is good, but it might be too primitive. Arx Fatalis was also good, but primitive. I just looked up this one, but I don't know anyone who has played it: "Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: Elements".?

Ha it gets even better when you find out Garrus's bodily fluids cause anaphylactic shock in humans when injested and Thane's skin is hallucinogenic. Holy too much information batman . . .

You can romance darkspawn? Since when? Also, I romanced Thane, though it is far from the best romance in gaming.

Yeah I like Garrus but you've got to draw the line somewhere, and anaphylactic shock is that line for me. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should . . .

Well that would send up the initial attraction flags, for sure. He's that last guy in the pictures you posted, though, right? The one with no lips, lol. The anaphylactic shock guy? You'd have to be ... creative ... in a romance with that guy.
