Almost all the screenshots so far have been amalgamations of Battle Chasers mixed with Dark Sun. No surprise really with the push of Spartan-Extreme gameplay. You can namedrop all you want, when you give me that I'm not buying into the hype...at...all.

I won't say it's totally impossible that DA2 won't be 120-140 hours of gameplay because I thought BG2 was 'impossible' compared to what I saw in BG1 back in the day, but I highly doubt we will get that much out of Bioware. Mass Effect 2 with it's 20-30 hours would seem to be about right.

Oh, and correct me if I am wrong, but is Hawke now sporting Manji's (from Blade of the Immortal) scar?

You know what, if DA2 is three times longer than DA, I probably won't play it. I was having game fatigue by the end of DA, with Bownammar and the Brecillian Forest. Unless the "three times longer" refers to romances, side quests, etc.

I know the feeling. Orzammar/Deep Roads always gives that me that. It's not so bad in the other places (the Fade being one other chore). If they can pull off a good balance of grind and relaxation, extended game time won't be a problem for me.

I liked the convo's and dialouge in DA since it relived the tension from the grind of Deep Roads, or the Fade.

IRT "Hawke can fly" - note that in Origins our characters possessed some nice vertical stats when finishing off ogres, broodmothers, and high dragons.

As to the DR - I think what they're trying to do is navigate the mess of keeping it important, but at the same time, not throwing anyone's storylines under the bus. Basically, they're trying to please all camps, since canonizing the DR is going to create outrage for anyone who did any of the sacrifice endings, and trivializing it is going to create outrage over those who did it.

The best way to handle the DR would be too resource-intensive, since you'd be making one version with the DR and one without. The cheap compromise would be to have the DR exit stage left and have it lost in obscurity. The worst thing to do would be to throw one or both camps under the bus.

They could do an AU thing, like "See what a great and horrible catastrophe you USers averted? Good on you." and then show how the DR would play out. Like the "Thank goodness the PC Warden existed to stop the Blight!" DLCPosted Image

I don't know- I think its just like smeared blood, but maybe it turns into a scar over time?

As for the Deep Roads and such- there was alot of grinding in Origins to beef up the play time, but it makes sense that you get that in the Deep Roads, IMO. The problem was that all of the areas up until the Dead Trenches looked so boring and similar to each other. Spice up the environments and make them more interesting and its not as much of a grind.

And until you can see the game in motion, its hard to fairly judge the graphics one way or the other. Sometimes screesn look great but in motion the game doesn't look good or the other way around.

As for the visual style change- like I've said, I'll wait and see how they treat art assets from Origins before I begin to lose hope on it. I don't care for the new Chalkspawn although Flemeth looks cool, albeit I want to see her face closer up to see if its close to the concept art or her Origins appearance at all. I just don't want to see them reboot and retcon everything, which is what it seems like they're doing, for better or worse.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before but very early in the podcast they mention that Cassandra the chantry chick is frantically searching for Hawke and that the "World is on the edge of war." Listening to that it seemed like a huge hint at where DA2 is going to end up, it seems that somehow Hawke's actions have both upset the Chantry and pushed the entire world to the brink of global conflict. With Flemeth around I can't help but wonder if Hawke is being played in Flemeth's grand scheme . . . whatever that may be it seems to be on a collision course with the Chantry.

In one screen it just looks like mud or a bloodsmear, but in all the other screenshots and especially in the promotional art it looks like a complete rip of Manji's scarring.

That would make the most sense I would think. Dragon Age games all being Final Fantasy one-off's all inter-connected with Flemeth (or whomever she's working for/torwards) bridging them all together in one 'grand plot about the world of Dragon Age' or some such.

I know this is a crazy theory, but what if the Dragon Age was named after Flemeth? Maybe she was the dragon that was in Orlais when they decided on the name for the Age. Then again, it's probably not true, but that'd be interesting.

I really don't want to play a game where I'm being manipulated by a "greater power" the whole time. That really doesn't make me feel heroic.

Maybe. There are a lot of dragons in Origins that aren't Flemeth, though. Other than that the Old Gods were apparently dragons, do the dragons have any connection to the Fade or abominations or anything? Or are they just exotic animals, like griffons were?

That would mean that it is bigger than BG2. In 3D no less.

But Holmes, how did you figure it out? Posted Image

I was thinking about quotes like this.

Gaider wrote...
Ha. I think I can say with certainty that dialogue alone is not going to expand your playing time by that much. Some, perhaps, but ultimately more story requires more resources. This is why we designers spend so much time hat in hand imitating Oliver Twist at our project meetings. Posted Image

This is not to say that DA is going to be short, by any means. The focus is on content, for sure. All I'm saying is that if your expectations run to thinking that the amount of content in BG2 is or should be the norm that you're setting yourself up for disappointment. BG2 is fine and all (I reserve a warm little place in my black, black heart for it, as well) but even had we the capability I'm not sure we'd want[/i] to make a game as long again. I'm sure y'all appreciated the effort that went into it, but even as we were doing it we recognized that it was excessively indulgent.

There are lots of things that went into the kind of experience that BG2 offered which can (and are) being brought into DA -- amongst other things. Massively-almost-overlong game length is not all that BG2 had going for it, after all.

And this

Oh, come on. Media buzz can be purchased and everybody knows it.

There is serious competition in the CRPG market, so it's probably not possible to have the *best* graphics, story, and game engine all in one box. BG I did not have graphics any better than some of the other games out at the time ... but it had just what it needed.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; Baldur's Gate came out at the right time to do what it did. 2D art was at a cheap, easy point in production capacity and the 3D revolution had not kicked in yet. On top of that, BG had next to no competition in its relevant market.

While all of that worked in BG's favor, none of those are the case for Dragon Age. The market competition has a stronger presence, the 3D revolution has long[/i] since ramped up, and the cost of resources has increased a great deal.

Yes, we could make a 100 hour game if we gave the graphics a serious downgrade.

We're not going to.

Sou either EA came with a cornucopia of money for them or it isn't happening.

Gaider and Morrigan's DR: Phaonica brings up a good point- how big of a role can the Old God Baby be if it won't be in any US universes? It should be added though that BioWare will have an established canon for new players in DA2, so if the DR is canon or default there, that should be something to go off of. I 'd just hate it to see some sort of ME style wishy washy continuity on that front. Like revisting Wrex in ME2- if you killed him in ME1, you basically get a generic ruler in ME2 but Wrex only has a couple unique lines of dialogue.

Personally I hope this means the tale of Morrigan goes in 2 wildly divergent paths- how cruel would it be if the only way our Wardens could get a "happy" ending was by turning Morrigan down? Have us DR people messed up already? Having said that the DR was the single most important choice in Origins, I hope Gaider and BioWare treat it as such going forward and don't just hack it down into some side quest.

As I said before. It won't big such a big issue as people make it out to be. Everyone(incuding me) thought the DR would be tied to the main plot of DA2 but now we are proven wrong. The save importation feature prerry much removes the OGB from having a big impact in the main plot.

We'd be lucky if we even have a side quest for Morrigan. I'm suspecting they will just reduce the whole Morrigan/OGB story into dialogue or codex. Or maybe even a cameo.

Just take a look at ME2 and Awakening. A save from a previous game can only give you so much.

Since I haven't really read the previous posts attentively as of this moment, I'll pass up jumping in the convo for now.

Anyway, I found this at dA. Previews for DAO action figures to be released soon (according to the uploader). Wish there was a closer look on the Morri one. :(

Duncan's says all you really need to know about joining the Grey Wardens, does it not? "Drink this or get this."

I chuckle at how Duncan's figure is posed like he's saying, "Recruit, drink this, or I will be forced to end your life." EDIT: Oh, SurelyForth beat me to it. XD

Anyway, to avoid being too offtopic, aimo did new Morrigan art a few days ago. XD And I think Swoo will be happy.

Same. I'd love to buy some, but getting a real look at one of the figures is already a big IF for me since I live half a world away. XD (Then it would cost a lot if someone does import it here.)

Since the eternal "Warden can taint the OGB" debate came up again I'll just post what David Gaider said about Wardens spreading the taint:

It cannot be done in any way.

Wardens canot spread the taint to others under any circumstances. If this were possible all the Wardens would have been hunted down and killed by now, since they'd be almost the same as darkspawn.

Whatever reason Morrigan has to demand that the Warden never follow after her definitely doesn't have anything to do with the taint within him.

I didn't knew about that. thanks for providing the info. Well, that sealed that theory i suppose. Now i feel even more clueeless than before

Anyhow, i wondered about the possible influence of the OGB in DA 2. They said its not canon, so it can't be plot central. On the other hand, downgrading this important decision to a sidequest with little to no influence is probably not that much of a good idea either.

I thought this maybe indicates that the Morrigan/OGB plot will de dealt with in a different manner. Either in a later game or a second xpac. Both ways, if they make her and her plans more central they have more ressources to focus on her story and develop a plot where the OGB is not mandatory, therefore can be played by all endings but remain does not reduce the OGb and its decision to a boring sidequest?

That would be really foolish.  Wasting such a delicious story line...  it would be almost criminal.
