I'm seriously disappointed now.

The view change I can live with since I hardly used it in Origins anyway. But the toolset problem is simply mindblowing. If they updated the toolset for DA2 why the hell is it such a problem to release it to general public?

It takes some gal to promote community made content like the machinima and than refuse to release the updated tools for these people.

And the justification? Low sales of Origins for the pc when compared to slaes on consoles. By that logic why the hell are they even releasing a pc version of DA2?!

It's just an excuse not to spend money on developing the pc version in short.

The pc market is still pretty big in relevance, and in 10 years when all these consoles are broke people will still be playing dragon age on pc, where will Boi be then when they have lost all that revenue from failed dev of the pc version.

From DAO to DA2 we're getting simplified combat (whatever that means), 1 starting race,  1 voice option per gender (fully voiced, granted), limited camera angles, and no toolset.

Don't most games usually try to ADD features in a sequel?

I don't get this-- at all.  DAO was a blockbuster.  Were its production costs too high or something?  Were the profit margins too slim?  Why are they axing so many of the things that made DAO great?

It boggles my mind as well. It seems though that its the PC version getting the brunt of the cuts. To me, that just goes to show that on their shorter dev cycle for DA2 they're just focusing on the console version and porting that over as good enough for the PC, despite their claims that they're really working on all 3 simultaneously. Oh and they're not cutting features, they're "streamlining."

For once I'd like to see a BioWare sequel like BG2 that actually adds features and content, not cuts away features and dumbs everything down for the console market.

See, I used the iso view every once in a while, but I was always zooming in and out with the camera. What they haven't said is if we're just going to get stuck with fixed camera angles- I wouldn't doubt it at this stage.

Basically in my view the whole issue of not bothering to update the toolset until maybe sometime after launch and nixing the Origins isometric view is a matter of just giving a middle finger to PC gamers. They're happy to take our money, but only so they can work on the console versions while porting the console crud over to the PC , thinking thats good enough.

But this quote from the French magazine really makes me mad:

"Now, the game mainly sold on console, so we're going the way of the audience."

Maybe its a poor translation, but thats pretty freakin' damning in my book about the prospects of DA2 being anything other than a ME2 style PC port. Its insulting to anyone who has bothered to support the DA franchise on the PC, as all the monetary support is just going to make the console versions better and to screw over the PC version. Why would I continue to support this franchise on the PC when its clear their market is the consoles now? It just pisses me right off, especially since DA was supposed to be a return to BioWare's PC roots.

And the kicker is that thread got locked down in part because Laidlaw supposedly debunked the magazine article. Really? Laidlaw seems like a nice guy but that whole response was pure PR damage control filled with non answers. The main design changes have all been done with the consoles in mind and at this point I just thinkits horribly naive to think DA2 PC won't just be a console port that inflicts the limitations of the consoles on the PC. The whole unveiling of DA2 thus far IMO has been a disaster, especially if you're a PC gamer- but I guess the PC doesn't matter anymore to BioWare, we're just not their audience.

I think maybe Mike had his hands tied in this case possibly, he does seem a nice guy, does that mean the next thing they will "streamline" will be the morrigan story, or maybe the game engine or graphics, is this a vicious circle of whats to come.

If Bioware does not release anything about Morrigan before DA2 comes out, most likely it will not be tied to the Origins core game.  Quite frankly, I do not believe Bioware when they say that more Origins content will be released after DA2 comes out.

Yeah, I have a hard time believeing that too. Especially when it seems like they have a Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition coming out in October. I just don't really believe much BioWare has to say at this point. Just a couple months ago, you had BioWare saying stuff like this:

Bioware: PC is 'made for gaming' June 24,2010

Bioware has told CVG that the PC is "made for gaming" - and that there is "no question" over whether it will continue to lead development of its games on the format.

The  studio is now hard at work on hugely ambitious MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic - which will be exclusively released on PC.

Bioware designer and writing director Daniel Erickson said that the PC's interface was "less restrictive" than console equivalents.

"Every two or three years we hear the announcement of fantasy being  dead, PC gaming being dead and RPGs being dead," he said. "And yet, all of the biggest games that ever come out - that set the records - are  nearly always PC games, and a lot of them are fantasy games.

"The biggest game in the world is a  fantasy, PC, RPG MMO. We all know the drawbacks of PC. We all scream at  our boxes and try to make stuff work. But at the same time, the  interface is made for games. The mouse/keyboard interface allows so much less restriction [than console].

He added: "There was not a  question when we started Old Republic - or any of our games, for that
matter - [what the lead format would be]. There's a reason the lead SKU  for Dragon age was PC as well. When we're developing an RPG, it's a natural place to be."

Only to have DA2 unveiled a bit later as what is shaping up to be a console port, despite what BioWare is claiming.

Good chance that if and when they give some closure to Morrigan's story, that'll be it for me and BioWare- at least in terms of being a loyal fan. If they're not going to give a damn about the PC, why should I give a damn supporting their products?

Ugh no isometric view...sigh...how the hell do people line up that perfect fireball while using a 3rd person camera? seriously for the more tactical battles in DAO you needed to aim your cc to perfection to achieve results. Now we get the fkin console port...WHAT THE HELL

And then they remove the greatest competition for dlc: the modders.... For ****s sake what are they doing? I can sort of understand the camera thing, it does add up to a lot more work to make the levels blend out the top half of the level indoors...but still it was a defining feature of the game. Hell the only time where origins actually looked like a modern day game in the graphics department was when it was zoomed out...fack me this is pissing me off, gotta go stomp some zerg to release tention....

The thing that has me wondering (doom and gloom incoming!) is maybe given the other change being made to combat, the tactical view isn't needed?

Remember, basically the console version of Origins had easier combat with no friendly fire on default difficulty and had fewer enemies due to technical limitations of teh consoles. My understanding in part as to the inclusion of the tactical view on the PC was that it was more difficult with friendly fire and more numerous enemies, thus necessitating the tactical view.

A more zoomed in view for DA2 on the PC makes me think that perhaps we'll be stuck with the technical limitations of the consoles- namely fewer enemies and less friendly fire- so as to have Bio Ware not need to tweak the combat as much for the PC with a unique isometric view that would give away the fact that the game is gimped with fewer enemies and more forgiving AOE spells.

Just rampant speculation on my part, but there you have it.

Because my brain is tired from working on my thesis, I shall only say that I am disappointed with the revelation earlier. *sighs* I really, really love DAO in my PC because of the toolset. I'm a ps3 owner and I could have bought a copy for that, but now. DA in PC is much more awesome.

Anyway, to stay in topic. And to bring some happy and warm feelings into the thread.

Even though the Mass Effect 2 cuts were deep it still felt like a Mass Effect game, with DA2 the cuts on the PC side are so drastic it doesn't even sound like an equal entry into the franchise. It's categorically worse than Origins in every single aspect, with less features and less content.

I haven't played any of the ME games, but if that's true I guess there's not much hope in Bioware changing their stance on this "streamlining" eh?

That's surprising to me.  I've always bought bio games on PC when I could as they've always been better imo.  I bought KOTOR on console first before switching to PC and didn't go back.  I always assumed Bioware's primary market was PC, but I guess that has changed.

All in all I don't think I've felt more deflated about DA2 than I do now.  Their upcoming trailer better be pretty damn good <_<

Right, I mean at least with ME the franchise always was focused on the consoles and was always a sort of hybrid shooter-RPG in the first place. So while I didn't care for how much they cut back the RPG elements in ME2, its not like they were ever central or that well integrated anyway. DA is an entirely different beast, as Origins was built for the PC and deliberately built as an old school cRPG. Making cuts and changes to that is waaaaay more contentious.

The only BioWare game I've bought on consoles was KOTOR- and even then I got it on PC once it was released there. Really, of everything that trickled out yesterday it was the assertion that BioWare is just chasing the console cash with DA going forward that most ticked me off. For the most part though, in the past BioWare games were always better on the PC- even the ports of KOTOR, JE or ME1. But with ME2 they ported that in-house and quite frankly did a rather terrible job- ignoring basic PC features like allowing you to change key bindings. There really isn't any excuse for that.

Given how ho-hum all the DA2 news has been thus far, I'm not expecting much out of the trailer- if anything I'm willing to bet it will make me even more disappointed. We shall see...

Yeah me too Knight.  The irony here is that I'm going back to PC for RPGs and staying with the 360 for FPS's and TPS's.   I never seem to make a right move here with these guys.  I never wanted BW to dumb down the franchise.  I know full well the community playing consoles and DA was a welcome break from that low grade retardation.

I feel like a $#i+ right about now.

What's the running list of disappointments look like at this point?

*No Warden (thus no companions/romances included we all wanted)

*New set PC (no character creator)

*Voiced PC

*Addition of dialogue wheel (simplified conversations with emotes)

*No toolset

*No isometric tactical view

Feel free to add to the list.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!?

There is some hint with the letter openers?

As for the Ultimate Edition signaling the end of the DLC- its possible,  even if my hope is that we get one last expansino pack to tie off  Origins' loose ends seeing as DA2 doesn't appeal to me.

Yeah, I want to know more about this supposed Morrigan DLC too ../../../images/forum/emoticons/smile.png

In any case, if the Ultimate Edition comes with something I don't have,  it's going to be hard for me to resist buying a game I have already  spent enough money on for each new piece of content....

There was no hint that came with the letter openers themselves.  One of my  stands got lost in the shipping and I contacted the company twice which  they gladly replaced the missing stand free of charge.  The second time  talking to the supervisor we got to talking about how much we liked the  game etc.  He told me that they were working on several items like the  openers for upcoming DA:O projects, one being Leliana's dagger and  Morrigan's staff.  He then asked if I had heard of any new DLC for DA:O  at which time I wasn't aware of any.  I was then informed that sometime  around september there will be some DLC pertaining to Morrigan.  He said his company was somewhat pressed for time trying to get her staff made  in time for the dlc.  Thats all I know.  Just figured I would share it  with the community.

Let's hope that it is.

I'm in desperate need of some good news to cheer me up.

Makes me wonder what this DLC is going to be about. A reunion between Morrigan and the Warden? Something to shed light on Morrigan's plans? Setting up the ground for future Morrigan content in DA2 DLC or even DA3?

Hopefully its a meaningful piece of DLC, like the Warden searching for Morrigan or something significant, unlike most of the DLC thus far. Ideally it would be something involving the Warden searching for Morrigan, IMO. But what if its a DLC where you play as Morrigan? I don't know that I'd be down with that personally...

I'd prefer an expansion pack that deals with Morrigan but so long as the DLC is written by Gaider and isn't full of terrible out of character moments like RtO or just feels cheap like DC, then I'll be happy I guess...

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it. But if an Ultimate Edition of DAO is coming out in October, I wonder if that means that any possible Morrigan DLC in September is the last DLC for Origins? I'd vastly prefer one last expansion pack with Morrigan and the Warden, but I guess if its just a DLC then that will have to do....

And in other news, the trailer for DA2 is now only about 8 days away- is anyone still excited for that or has the endless tide of crummy news completely turned you off to DA2? I'm curious to see it still, albeit in more of an olnlooker watching a trainwreck sort of way. Maker help us all if its another brilliant Marilyn Manson style trailer to show how "amped up" DA2 will be....

I had completely forgotten there was a trailer coming up, and in such a short period of time even. Does that answer your question ^_^
