I was attending college out of state during that time. Affording food was tricky, let alone music CDs. Most of the CDs I did import from Japan back then weren't of game music.

Let me guess, those imported CD's where from bands like GIRUGAMESHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't recall most of them. I do recall picking up a few Glay CDs at the time, but the rest is fuzzy. The only reason I even remember the Glay stuff is because I've listened to them recently.

I have to admit, I've gone through a wapanese-period myself. Man, I used to listen to Japanese rock and metal all day long man, seriously. Bands like Girugamesh, The GazettE, Gackt, Dir en Grey, D'espairsRay, MUCC, SuG, Maximum the Hormone, X-Japan and sometimes Miyavi.

I totally looked like a f*g during that period (I still do according to some people :-P). I'm glad I got over that crap and started to listen real, actual good Scandinavian metal again.

1. Jade Empire ~ A masterful medley of East Asian musical styles performed with Western orchestral instruments, appropriately epic and heartbreaking in places.

2. Hitman: Contracts ~ Because Jesper Kyd is a genius at the dark ambient/electronica genre and his music really defines the Hitman series. The opening track "White Room" is my favorite.

3. Hitman: Blood Money ~ Same as above, though Kyd's arrangements this time around are more orchestral and symphonic than electronica-based.

4. Mirror's Edge ~ The instrumental theme "Still Alive". Fits the setting perfectly.

ID has made some of my fave soundtracks. True, I´m partial to Industrial music but still, the main theme in Doom 3 or all Quake II just rocks.

Divinity 2:Ego Draconis? Interesting choice. I don't think it would be on my list of favorites but I do think Divinity II has a very interesting, even bizarre soundtrack. That whistling town song is so catchy yet so strange.

kinda surprise no-one mentioned the sound track of No One Live Forever. Also the sound track of Total Annihilation was unique for a game (played by a symphonic orchestra).

Command & Conquer and in general, anything from Frank Klepacki is also cool.

More of an effort was made to link in the last thread. You know, next time someone posts one of these up I'm going to go crazy and post a top 50 or something similarly excessive. :P There's just waaay too much good video game music out there. Asking me to pick out a few definitive favorites is not only impossible, but cruel and unusual.

Also, I have to throw a nod to virumor. I haven't heard Divinity 2's soundtrack beyond the samples on Larian's web page, but the Divinity Universe album (which contains tracks from the first two games) is one of those CDs that never leaves my rotation. I'm not sure what it is exactly, but I can't get enough of Kirill's music.

You should've put Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, which is like Blood Money but better.

I'd say that Freedom Fighters has the best music, also done by Jesper Kyd.

Heroes of Might & Magic 5 soundtracks are pretty good too, along with the World of Warcraft ones.

I need to count what soundtracks I have, actually...

I actually can't believe someone would say that but ok. By chance have you heard the newest version of Aerith's (Aeris, whatever) theme, the piano version, from the FFVII: Advent Children soundtrack? I'm at work so I can't link it right now, but when I get home I'll find it somewhere if you haven't heard it. On it's own, without even knowing that it's part of a videogame, it's probably in my top five most beautiful songs of all time. I even bought the piano score so I could learn how to play it. (Too bad the piano is at my parent's house. Need to get a keyboard.)

@ Luc0s and others: In defense of FF music, I've found that the FFX theme At Zanarkand always brings a tear to my eye. It's just beautifully heartbreaking, and I'm not even an FF fan. (There's also an orchestral version which is even more breathtaking, and which reminds me, you might want to listen to the entire Tour de Japon orchestra series on Youtube before dismissing the entirety of composer Nobuo Uematsu's works. If that doesn't change your mind, I'm not sure what will. :-) )

P.S. I'd add that track to my list of 'best videogame music', since I just remembered it. ^_^

I agree with you there. Jesper also did the music for Assassin's Creed 2, and the soundtrack in there was really good.

FInal Fantasy IX's music was brilliant. Especially "Sleepless City Treno" I love that song.

Also, of this gen, Super Mario Galaxy takes that one. My jaw dropped the first time I heard the orchestra at full blast. Seriously, one of the best soundtracks in video game history.

I've never been a fan of Western video game music. It may be of course, because in western games the music isn't written to stand out like in japan, but rather to supplement the atmosphere. I'll give it to Halo, it has some truly great tracks.
