The best way of combating Piracy is incentive. The most effective way was with a CD-key and multiplayer. For games that don't have a multi-player aspect, then give them a reason to get a retail version.

GTAIV had "game-stoppers" built in to it. All pirated versions were unable to proceed past two main quests. The first was a car theft, it wouldn't trigger properly, and the second was that the in-game internet wouldn't open. You had to have a legitimate copy, and nobody with a legitimate copy encountered these 'errors'. That is more than enough to encourage people to get a retail game. You don't need to add any of this stupid ****ing DRM

The problem with game stoppers is that usually a single patch is enough to overcome them.

Probably the most out-dated anti-piracy method is the disk-check. It is truly annoying to switch disks even when all the data is on the HDD. They really shouldn't use it anymore.

Speaking of pirate game-stoppers... Mass Effect 1 overheating bug, anyone? ;)

Reporters! \\\\o/ Do me next! Do meee next! I iz ebil pirate, I swears.

Nice solution there. Although I guess people would start playing further away from their monitor to avoid that.

Funnily enough, it seems to be 'game-stoppers' that people can't be arsed to.

BusomJack, the small icon below my Avatr with the 2 in it means I own a full legal copy of Mass Effect 2. Guess what ? I still use No DVD patches so my disc is safely lying in my shelf should I need it for another install.

You think that's illegal ? Got news for you, buddy. It ain't.

Yep, If I remember right, the overheat bug only occurs with cracked exe's, so uz beens piratin', reported. I hate that bug too though, and I think there's a fix...OH SH*T. Like another guy said though, using no-cd dvd cracks are legal if you legally own the game blah blah.

Yes. A friend of a friend who eats babies for living, said the fix is to remove the Geth killer archivement, but I would have no idea if this was true. *serious face*

Okay, that was fun, but I'll post the links to legal no-cd links and other stuff another time. :P

Yep, I think that the best thing we can do is support companies using strategies like the ones used for ME2, namely DLC etc. Conversely you refuse to do business with a company like UBIsoft that seems to think punishing customers is the way to go.

Also, as for discontinuing PC software, there is a place in Toronto called the Pacific Mall. You can get a counterfeit of pretty much anything you can imagine there, including console games, going right into illegal cartridges for portable systems and older consoles. The place crawls with undercover cops and I wouldn't shop there for all the tea in China (What a coincidence, China is where the illicit goods are made) but if you are sleazy enough to go for it, you can get it.

OK, NOW I'm stopping.

The best way to combat piracy is to go after the uploaders all over the net with a sh*t load of azns in a sweatshop working 24/7.

Can't do anything about that, China pretty much sticks up their middle finger at the West.

Reminds me of those illegal bible games made for nintendo.

The Christians made games for the Nintendo Entertainment System without Nintendo's Approval, and then when they (Nintendo) added 'authentication' to their cartridges, they Christians made it so you could plug legitimate nintendo games in to the top of their games so that they would run on the system.

Unrelated, but that reminds me of Earthbound's copy protection, I'm sure you guys know what I'm talking about. lol

Edit: Now that i think about it, they totally should have done that with ME2, imagine a hundred harbingers coming for you, EPIC!

Spuudle: Yes, because a lot of people outside of first world countries (who make up an admittedly small purchasing demograph, but still a significant one) can't get a constant internet connection, and many people still live in areas with horrendously slow internet.

I live in america and have some faulty routers.  It isn't just limited to less than 1st world countries.  If you have a less than reliable router it affects you just as much (maybe).  I had to resort to disabling Cerberus network and making my profile stop auto signing in to Xbox Live.  You can still play the game if you don't have an internet connection, you just have to sign in to XL and CN before you can get DLC and news.

I'm sorry, but you are wrong.

From E:\\Mass Effect 2\\docs\\Eula.rtf (i had to translate it myself to english cause it came in polish with my copy so the words can be different)

D. Further limitations. The right to use the Software is restricted by granted limited license and it is prohibited to copy, display, distribution, performances, publications, modify (1), create derivative works from (2), use the Software or its components in a manner different than the terms and conditions of a license. It is forbidden to take copies of the Software available on the network where it could be used by multiple users. It is prohibited to access the Software on a network where it could be downloaded by many users. It is prohibited to remove EA's trademark, logo, or legal information contained in the software or related items(3).

so,
1) prohibits you from using no-cd patch
2) prohibits creation of mods
3) prohibits using -nomovies command

Don't take me wrong, i'm not criticising what you are doing, as i do same with some of my games, but your statement was incorrect.

I doubt it.  Not everyone hooks their 360 up to the net, especially if they aren't interested in buying movies or online gaming.  If it did, I really wouldn't care.  My connection is stable on both my PC and 360.
