This is just some food for thought, don't know if anyone else ever posted these ideas, but I feel like someone must have.
The Mako in Mass Effect 1 always reminded me of the old arcade game, Moon Patrol. If you're too young to remember just google Moon Patrol. I always wondered if the Mako was an homage to Moon Patrol.
The planet / solar system exploration and obtaining minerals reminds me of an old PC game from the 90s called Star Control 2. With the addition of fuel and scanning for minerals it really seems like Star Control 2.
My suggestion would be in terms of maintaining time as a currency in the game. I don't know if I'm saying this right, but it seemed like part of the whole mining the planets for minerals had to do with maintaining a certain level not letting players jump to fast too soon as far as obtaining upgrades so they don't fly through content. A lot of people complained about how the new scanning for minerals seemed tedious.
My suggestion specifically as far as managing time would be to move the time synch of mining for minerals to research. There was another old PC game from the 90s called X-COM that has consistently been in many gaming magazines top PC games of all times if not the best PC game of all time. In it you could research and reverse engineer alien technology and fabricate both alien weapons and new weapons based on their technology. The thing that I liked about it better than Mass Effect was that research and fabrication took time. Say you wanted to get access to alien plasma rifles, you had to dedicate a certain number of scientists to the task. The more scientists you dedicated the faster it took. Also, you could choose what upgrades to go for, so you might skip some tech tree in order to go after something that was more appealing.
The reason I thought this would be cool to integrate into the Mass Effect Universe was that it was a lot more immersive than just picking a technology and automatically receiving it after picking it. The idea that it would take time for Moridin or your techs to research it seems a lot more immersive than automatically just picking it out to me. It also helps put in a time control that I think at least conceptually might be better than having to tediously scan for minerals.
Just a thought.
Influence of older games on Mass Effect and game suggestion for ME3
